New dog law
FirstNews ISSUE 348 15 - 21 FEB 2013
THIS week the Government announced that from the year 2016, all dogs in
the UK must be microchipped.
A microchip is a tiny electronic device that is inserted under the dog’s skin by an
injection. The chip contains important information about the dog, including its owner’s
name, address and telephone number. Each dog has its own individual microchip number.
At the moment it is up to the dog’s owners to decide whether they want to microchip
their pets or not.
Microchips help dogs to be reunited with their owners and can also help discover where
strays come from. Around 11,000 dogs are reported as lost each year and the microchips
will help those animals become reunited with their owners a lot faster.
The new law can also help with the welfare of the animals, especially if they are being
mistreated or are considered dangerous. The chip allows the owners to be traced and
the idea is to make all owners responsible for their pets’ actions.
From 2016 police officers and local authorities will be able to check dogs for microchips
using a small scanner. People who fail to microchip their dogs after an initial warning
could face a £500 fine. The Dogs Trust holds free microchipping events around the UK so
that owners can microchip their pets for free.
