BRIDGE THE ILLUSTRATION GAP (+ A PRE-CONFERENCE ASSIGNMENT)
No matter where you are on your journey as an illustrator, bridging the gap to the next level can be a
challenge. Whether you are taking your first step or your thousandth, Executive Art Director
Giuseppe Castellano will review the keys to moving forward. We will discuss websites,
traditional vs. digital art, the many tools of marketing, and the one thing that
really matters above all else. Questions are encouraged.
JULIEN CHUNG draws animals with hats, collects comic books, and still believes in Santa Claus. In his
25 years as a professional designer and illustrator, he’s created a lot of crazy characters. Desipte his tendency
toward the silly, he’s been recognized by some pretty serious organizations, including the New York Society
of Illustrators, Applied Arts, 3×3, the Society for News Design, and Canada’s National Newspaper Awards.
Julien’s career as a creative illustrator took off in 2003, thanks to a dapper little penguin. Today, his images
can be found on products across Germany and the rest of Europe, as well as in Japan, South Korea, Canada,
and the United States—more than 50 countries around the world. His first picture book, Petit Lion (Bayard
Canada, 2014), garnered awards at the 3×3 Picture Book Show (New York, 2015) and was shortlisted at the
World Illustration Awards (London, 2015). His illustrations for Hurry Up! won a Purple Island Award at the
Nami Concours in South Korea (2017).
WORKSHOP: GETTING STARTED IN LICENSING
Can you see your characters on greeting cards, jigsaw puzzles, or dishes? In this workshop, you’ll find
out what art licensing is, if it is for you, and how you can make it into a revenue stream. Julien will
share his experience in creating and selling art to agents and manufacturers in stationery and gift
markets around the world.
SYDNEY SMITH discovered his love of children’s illustration while studying drawing and printmaking
at NSCAD University in Halifax, NS. He was awarded the 2015 Governor General’s Award for Illustrated
Children’s Books for Sidewalk Flowers, a wordless picture book that he illustrated with author JonArno
Lawson. Check out his work at http://sydneydraws.tumblr.com.
WORKSHOP: USING ILLUSTRATIONS TO INFLUENCE AND ELEVATE
Sydney will talk about how illustrations can elevate a story, influence how the words are read, and
become an essential part of the package. He will use his most recent books, Town is by the Sea and
The White Cat and the Monk, as examples as he discusses his process.

RUKHSANA KHAN is an award-winning author and storyteller. She was born in Lahore, Pakistan and
immigrated to Canada at the age of three. Rukhsana grew up in a small town in southern Ontario and was
ruthlessly bullied. Drugs were against her religion (so was suicide), so she turned to books and became
hopelessly addicted to the written word. When a grade eight teacher told her she was a writer, she thought
the idea was crazy. Writers were white people. They were from England and America. To be “sensible,”
Rukhsana graduated from college at the top of her class as a biological-chemical technician. When she
couldn’t get a decent job, she decided to be “unsensible” and become a writer. It took eight years to get her
first book published. Now she has twelve books published (one of which was chosen by the New York Public Library as one of the 100 greatest children’s books in the last 100 years). Some of her books have been
published in other countries and in different languages. She has appeared on television and radio lots of
times, and has been featured at conferences and festivals around the world. She’s been a corporal in the air
cadets, worked on vintage warplanes, composed songs and written stories for children’s videos, raised four
children (three girls and a boy), and has ten grandchildren.
Rukhsana loves reading, writing, storytelling, traveling, gardening, and hiking. She used to like tobogganing, but she broke her wrist while zooming down a slope on one of those little red saucer things. As a result,
she no longer likes tobogganing. Rukhsana lives in Toronto with her husband and family.
KEYNOTE: Tapping into the Zen of Creativity
Never mind your head, when it comes to story creation, listen to your gut! It’s a better indicator of
what path your characters should take. In this presentation, Rukhsana will show you how to tap
into your inner instinct, and produce a story that soars way beyond the formulaic!
JENNIFER LAUGHRAN joined Andrea Brown Literary Agency in 2007 after a long career as a bookseller, buyer, and event coordinator. Always on the lookout for sparkling YA and middle grade fiction with
unusual and unforgettable characters and vivid settings, she loves funny books, thrilling books, romantic
books, books that make her cry, and all-around un-put-downable books . . . and her true favorites are all of
the above.
Some clients include author-illustrators like Giselle Potter, Don Brown, Raul the Third, and Phoebe Wahl;
middle grade authors like Daniel Pinkwater, Kate Messner, Alex Gino, and Linda Urban; YA authors like
Erin Jade Lange, Paula Stokes, Karen Rivers, and Ellen Emerson White, among others. (All of them, of
course, geniuses!) She does not rep “grown-up books.”
WORKSHOP: EVERYTHING YOU’VE ALWAYS WANTED TO KNOW
ABOUT AGENTS BUT WERE AFRAID TO ASK
An overview on the care and keeping of the author-agent relationship, secrets from behind the
agent curtain, and lots more. A fun, interactive workshop—come armed with questions!
MELISSA MANLOVE is a senior editor at Chronicle Books in San Francisco. She has been with Chronicle
for 12 years. Her acquisitions tend to be for all ages in nonfiction, and ages 0-8 for fiction. When acquiring, she looks for fresh takes on familiar topics, as well as the new and unusual. An effective approach and
strong, graceful writing are important to her. Melissa has 17 years of children’s bookselling experience.
WORKSHOP: Fact Meets Feeling: Writing Narrative Nonfiction
That Informs, Entertains, Moves, and Convinces Audiences
This talk will explore several recent examples of excellent narrative nonfiction, and how
these books hook both editors and readers.
WORKSHOP: What We Say Without Saying:
Developing Voice in the Text and Art of Picture Books
In this talk, we’ll unpack the many elements of voice—for both authors and illustrators. We’ll listen
to and look at examples from current picture books, and come away with a toolbox of techniques
that can serve and celebrate your narrative.

WENDY LOGGIA is a senior executive editor at Delacorte Press, an imprint of Random House
Children’s Books. Wendy has worked with some of the most talented authors writing today and edits
middle-grade and YA fiction—she’s especially interested in girl-driven, commercial stories. There’s
really no fiction genre she won’t acquire for, although she’s not really a “high fantasy” person. Recent
titles she has edited include the #1 New York Times bestseller and National Book Award finalist, The
Sun is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon; the New York Times bestseller and first in a trilogy, And I Darken by
Kiersten White; and the nail-biting thriller The Third Twin by CJ Omololu. Her 2017 list includes The
Whole Thing Together by Ann Brashares, Addie Bell’s Shortcut to Growing Up by Jessica Brody, and a
middle-grade debut from SCBWI member Jeffrey Michael Ruby, Penelope March is Melting. Follow
@wendyloggia on Twitter.
WORKSHOPS
THE CLICK FACTOR: THE EDITOR/AUTHOR PARTNERSHIP
Why does an editor decide to partner with an author and acquire a book for an imprint?
What happens after the confetti is tossed and the deal is announced? How does a one-book
deal turn into a career?
REVISING STEP-BY-STEP
The thought process that goes into a revision letter and notes from an editor’s p.o.v, and how a writer
can digest that feedback and take a project to the next level.
MARSHA SKRYPUCH is the author of 21 books from JK to adult, fiction and nonfiction, and is
published internationally. Her best known book is Making Bombs for Hitler, and her most recent is
Adrift At Sea: A Vietnamese Boy’s Story of Survival. Her awards include two Silver Birches, the Crystal
Kite, the Geoffrey Bilson, Red Cedar, Junior Library Guild, and the MYRCA. With Valerie Sherrard,
Marsha has run Authors’ Booking Service for eleven years and has arranged thousands of gigs for her
fellow book creators. She now limits her own sessions to about 100 a year. www.calla.com
WORKSHOP: Author Visit Tips: Carving Your Niche (pro session)
Author visits are an excellent way to augment income, but how can you carve your own niche in this
competitive market? How do you get invited in the first place? Once you get a yes, what happens then?
And how do you create the content for the visit itself? Is there a way to transform a one-hour request
into a full day? How do you become a dream visiting author?
DEBORAH WARREN founded East West Literary Agency in 2000, after 17 years at Harcourt, and
has a strong background in sales and marketing. She’s a strategist, incorporating long-term goals to
help E/W clients not only to grow a career, but to flourish within that career. With over 37 years of
experience in the publishing industry, and over 17 years at the helm of the Agency, Deborah not only
represents authors and illustrators of picture books, she represents authors and illustrators—both
debut and established—in the board book, concept, novelty, multicultural, nonfiction, middle-grade,
and young adult markets.
Deborah’s looking to fall in love with character-driven stories with heart, enhanced by a hook, told in
a unique, fresh, or distinctive way. Her sweet spots: short, quirky picture books and smartly layered,
memorable, and insightful MG and YA fiction. And she LOVES finding debut talent—in fact, it’s a bit
of a specialty for the Agency.
She’s particularly drawn to author/illustrators and appreciates a wide range of illustration styles.
Deborah also connects with the look and feel and concept of classic Star Trek and Twilight Zone
episodes... so she’s up to seeing anything in that genre. OH, and re-imaginings of fairy tales, too, like
Beauty and the Beast and The Princess Bride. And anything that offers diverse points of view.
WORKSHOP: From A to Z and East to West (and MONTREAL, too!)
An all-access insider’s pass, complete with tips and tales and do’s and don’ts.
x
ELLEN YEOMANS hauls herself out of bed way too early every morning to feed goats, pigs, ducks,
chickens, and cattle. As a farmhand at nearby 150-year-old Abbott Farms, she mixes feed, mucks
stalls, and moves around far too many bales of hay and straw. She also tries out some of her best lines
on her barnyard friends. While they seem to offer no editorial advice, the animals do provide a rapt
audience. Or perhaps they are just hanging around hoping for another handful of molasses feed.
Ellen is a ghostwriter for a middle-grade series at Penguin Publishing. She is the author of picture
books: Jubilee (Eerdmans Books for Young Readers, 2004) and Lost and Found, Remembering a
Sister (Centering, 2000), and a young adult novel, Rubber Houses (Little, Brown Books for Young
Readers, 2007). Her forthcoming books include The Other Ducks (Neal Porter Books) and Some
Snow Is . . . (Putnam).
Ellen is the SCBWI Regional Advisor Emeritus for Upstate New York and received her MFA in
writing for children from Vermont College of Fine Arts. Ellen lives with her family in Baldwinsville,
New York, where she tries not to track too much hay throughout the house.
x
WORKSHOP: Ghostwriting and Work for Hire
What exactly is work-for-hire, and why would anyone want to be a ghost? This type of writing has
particular rewards and challenges. We will discuss topics such as deadlines, voice “mimicry,” and
confidentiality.
ALMA FULLERTON was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. She grew up in a large military
family and has lived in various cities in Ontario, British Columbia, Nova Scotia, and Germany. Alma
struggled with reading and instead memorized most things until the age of nine when, with the help
of her grade four teacher, she realized she had dyslexia. By grade nine, Alma had come to love reading. She now lives in Ontario with her husband and two daughters.
Alma is published in both novels and picture books, as well as in illustration. Her books have won
or been nominated for over two dozen awards, including the Governor General finalist 2008, TD
Canadian Children’s Literature Award finalist 2009 and 2011, Ruth and Sylvia Schwartz Award 2009,
CLA Children’s Book of the Year Honor Book 2009 and 2011, Golden Oak Award 2009, Once Upon
a World Children’s Book Award 2009, Manitoba Young Readers’ Choice Award shortlist 2010, Silver
Birch Award shortlist 2010, Bank Street College Best Children’s Books 2009 and 2014, Blue Spruce
Award 2014 and 2016, and Kentucky Bluegrass Award 2015.
PEGGY COLLINS is an award-winning children’s author and illustrator living in Forest Mills,
Ontario. She has illustrated over 30 books for children for clients domestically and internationally—
including Fitzhenry and Whiteside, Simon and Shuster, Scholastic, and Red Robin Books. Peggy is a
mom of two, and an animation, design, and illustration college professor. She is represented by Red
Fox Literary.

Trudeau International Airport), by train
(VIA Rail), and by bus (Greyhound).
The Holiday Inn Montreal Centre-Ville
is located right downtown, on the edge

Phone: 514-878-4021.
MANUSCRIPT CRITIQUES
Limited numbers of one-on-one manuscript critiques from one of our speakers or with a published author are available to conference attendees, for an additional fee. Critique fees must be
paid with registration and cannot be refunded. If you request two critiques, we will do our best to
accommodate both.
SCBWI members receive priority. No requests for consultation with a particular faculty member
will be considered.
For novels, send no more than 10 manuscript pages, plus a one-page synopsis. For picture books
(or shorter works), send only one manuscript, which cannot exceed 10 pages.
Manuscripts must be received no later than April 15, 2017. Please email them to canadaeast@
scbwi.org.
ACCOMMODATIONS
Need a place to stay while attending the
conference? We have negotiated a special
rate of $162 per night at the Holiday Inn
Montreal Centre-Ville that applies to
either single or double occupancy. You
must book your rooms DIRECTLY with
the Holiday Inn Montreal Centre-Ville,
by April 29th. Phone 514-878-9888 or
888-878-9888.
MEALS
The conference fee includes coffee and tea
on Saturday and Sunday mornings, and
lunch on Saturday and Sunday. Special
dietary needs must be brought to our attention at the time of registration. We will
do our best to accommodate them, but
cannot offer a guarantee. Contact Alma
Fullerton at [email protected] to
discuss your dietary needs.
NOTE: Manuscripts MUST be sent as attached Word docs, in a standard, submission-ready format, i.e., double-spaced, in an easy-to-read 12pt font. Note that a properly formatted manuscript
page is approximately 250 words. DO NOT play with your spacing, font, tabs, or margins to fit
more text onto the page. If you fail to follow these guidelines, we reserve the right to refuse you a
critique.
PORTFOLIO CRITIQUE & SHOWCASE
Limited numbers of one-on-one portfolio critiques with one of our speakers are available, for
an additional fee. Critique fees must be paid with registration and cannot be refunded. SCBWI
members receive priority.
Bring your portfolio to the conference. We will not be held responsible for any damage to or loss
of materials brought to the event.
PRE-CONFERENCE MANUSCRIPT CRITIQUE
The first page of your manuscript is what will capture (or not) an editor or agent’s interest. You
will have an optional pre-conference opportunity to participate online in a “polish and shine”
critique session with your fellow attendees. By workshopping your manuscript with fellow
conference goers before the deadline, you can submit a better piece of work for your one-on-one
critique or the First Pages session.
PRE-CONFERENCE ILLUSTRATION ASSIGNMENT
There will be a pre-conference illustration assignment. It is optional, but is an excellent opportunity. This is in addition to the optional one-on-one portfolio critiques. You MUST be registered
by May 1 to participate in the pre-conference critique portion of this assignment and have access
to the internet.
BEFORE May 10 you may submit, at no extra fee (either or
both):
• The FIRST PAGE of a manuscript, double-spaced, in a
readable font no smaller than 12p. Do not send a page from a
manuscript you are submitting for a one-on-one critique. At
the top of the page, please indicate that the submission is a first
page, and give its genre. You may submit a first page for more
than one manuscript, on different pages.
• A PITCH PARAGRAPH that describes your book project
(maximum: 200 words). At the top of the page, please indicate
that it is a pitch paragraph. You may submit more than one
pitch paragraph, on different pages.
• Illustrators: bring postcards to submit at registration.
Do not put your name on your submissions, as selected pages
and paragraphs will be read aloud anonymously to the audience. As we cannot predict how many pieces will be submitted,
we cannot guarantee that all will be heard.
PAL BOOK FAIR
(with film/TV/digital creators)
Please note—this is the first year we are doing this and we can
NOT guarantee how many people from the film industry will
show up at this time.
We will be holding a book fair on Saturday afternoon. We
have invited people from the film, TV, and digital industry to
come meet our PAL members and see the amazing work they
have been producing. We hope that by offering this session,
we will spark some future collaborations between authors and
children’s video producers in Canada.
If you are a PAL member (“published and listed”) and would
like to participate in this session, please bring up to 10 individual titles (1 copy only) so the people coming from the film
industry can see what you’ve done. (Note: These books are for
display and discussion purposes only. We will not be selling
books at this session).
HEADSHOTS AND AUTHOR/ILLUSTRATOR
PHOTOS
Published or not, we all want to spruce up our websites or
Facebook pages from time to time. Do you need a new photo
or two? We will have a photographer available to take photos
for conference attendees at no extra charge (tips are welcome,
however). Please bring your own props, if you’d like to personalize your photo.
SCBWI PROMOTIONAL PHOTOS
Please note: We will be taking photographs of the event.
Photos are for promotional use by SCBWI Canada East only in
conjunction with our online presence (website, blog, Twitter,
Facebook, etc.) and future conference materials. If you do not
wish to be photographed, please let the organizers know at the
start of the event.
THE “OPENING CHAPTER” GET-TOGETHER
On Friday, May 26, from 7:30–11:00 p.m., conference attendees
are invited to kick off the conference by gathering with fellow
attendees in the bar area of the Holiday Inn (just off the lobby)
for an informal get-together. Illustrators are encouraged to set up
their portfolios. Space will be available for authors and illustrators
to share promotional materials, but as it is limited we ask that you
keep them to a small stack, to leave room for others.
BOOK SALE
Books suggested by our speakers or written or illustrated by
SCBWI PAL and Full members will be offered for sale during the
weekend by Montreal’s children’s bookstore, Livres Babar Books,
located in Pointe-Claire at 46 Sainte-Anne. Phone: 514-694-0380.
