Literary/Poetry Terms in Romeo and Juliet
As we are reading, choose various literary/poetry
terms you have learned in World Literature and
American Literature (metaphor, simile, oxymoron,
paradox, pun, foreshadowing, etc) and create a
scrapbook page (12” x 12”) for YOUR character in
Romeo and Juliet and include the following:
 8 literary terms with their definitions
(in your own words)
 Specific examples from the play, in
QUOTATIONS
spoken
by
your
character or about your character by
another, and include the act, scene,
and line number for the quotation.
 Your character's name in the page
title; add any decorations you like to
make your page attractive.
For example:
Metaphor (comparison not using like or as)
 Romeo – “It is the east and Juliet is the sun” (II, ii, 2)
 Romeo – “I have a soul of lead” (I, iv, 15)
Simile (comparison using like or as)
 Romeo – “The brightness of her cheek would shame those stars, as
daylight doth a lamp” (II, ii, 19-20)
Personification (giving human characteristics to nonhuman objects)
 Romeo – “She hangs upon the cheek of night” (I, v, 40-41)
 Friar Lawrence – “ The grey-eyed morn smiles on the frowning night” (II,
iii, 1)
I would like to be able to display these pages in our classroom, so please our some
effort into this! Your completed scrapbook page will be due on Wednesday,
February 15th.
By the way, you CANNOT use any of the examples I have listed above!
