We also want to thank you guys for your continuous hard work and dedication in the classroom and your patience and understanding for your teachers; to all the parents who on a daily basis help your children and us in our academic and school activities; and, to the entire FIHS population for this school year’s support and constant positive attitude in a fun yet challenging journey. Let’s start by saying that our students are using Spanish in the classes and beyond this setting. They have become experts using their digital book, doing presentations, writing conversations and short plays, learning the culture, participating in the homecoming parade, competing at the state level, and traveling to Spain. Further, every morning, our students recite the pledge in the Spanish language. WOW! The students also have been able to gain a different vision of the value of learning Spanish besides the grade and college requirement by listening to Mr. Greg Kynast, a former FIH Spanish teacher, as a guest speaker. Mr. Kynast talked to the students about his “cultural experience” in different countries in Central America and the importance of speaking Spanish to understanding the culture. Golden Eagle Gazette Spring 2016 Page 6 The students’ positive outlook to studying Spanish has been amazing. They constantly demonstrate success in using vocabulary, building sentences in present, past, and subjunctive, creating skits, reading poems, singing songs, writing recipes in the Spanish language, and learning about the culture. This year, Spanish 3 students celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month by researching a famous Hispanic personage, writing, and presenting it in Spanish. Some of them went the extra mile and acted like the personage and imitated their Spanish accent. Such was the case of Desi Arnaz from the famous show “I Love Lucy”. Yet, our students’ journey doesn’t stop in the classroom. It goes on even after school hours through the Spanish Club, the Spanish Honor Society, and the Florida State Spanish Conference (FSSC). Every Tuesday and Thursday, the Spanish Honor Society (SHS) with Mrs. Brasfield tutor students who need help. Every other Friday, FIH/SHS members go to Thunderbolt Elementary and share the Spanish culture and language with young hearts in their Spanish Club. This coming April 18 th, many great students will be inducted in the Spanish Honor Society. We also have students who together with Ms. Brasfield and Ms. Berrios travelled to Spain and were immersed in the target language while appreciating culture, art, architecture, food and more first hand.. In this year’s Homecoming parade, the Spanish Club represented one of the most popular sports in Spanish speaking countries: SOCCER. They dressed up as players, coaches, referees, and of course, fans. In addition, they celebrated different cultural celebrations such as the Day of the Dead. This year again, the club members organized a collection of blankets to donate to the Clay Animal Control Center and took care of the animals for a while in the holiday spirit. On another note, the Florida State Spanish Competition FIHS team had yet another rewarding year at the State level. They did a fine job in their impromptu and some of them brought back individual trophies. We had great poets who performed with style and confidence. For this year’s play, Mr. Michael Green, FIH Art teacher, together with his students, provided us with excellent props which were widely commended in Orlando by judges and audiences. Our play was again a script crafted by our own students from Spanish 3 and 4. Special mention goes to Mia Sanchez and Miah Peña Ramirez who wrote the funny commercials in Spanish for the play. What an awesome way to show the Spanish learning gained in the classroom and extensively applied in this academic state competition. Again this year, we had regular class (13) and AICE (3) students representing our school, but this year we shared the bus with Oakleaf High School which for the first time joined this experience. We are so proud of our kids and so grateful to the Lord for these opportunities. This year is somewhat bittersweet for our academic team. This year is the last one where we can count on the great contributions of our three seniors who graduate this year and will not be with us the next one: Natalie Arands, Sammie Roberts, and Priscilla Sauri. We wish you a successful college career and many blessings in your journeys. We are going to miss you. On the other hand, we are looking forward to new delegates who may bring as valuable a contribution as that of those departing. On a personal note, I also want to thank you parents for your strong and constant support to all of us, to Mr. Green for his formidable props, to Ms. Johnson for her incomparable candy selling abilities and together with Ms. Lapinski (a teacher and collaborator) for their cooperation and hard work, and to the Foreign Language Department, the Spanish Club members, Mr. Pittman and the FIH administration, and the larger FIH family that helped us to carry on with this accomplishment. Golden Eagle Gazette Spring 2016 Page 7 The Vystar Academy recently held their annual Mock Interviews. This experience is vital in preparing students, no matter their ultimate chosen career, in the art of interviewing and marketing themselves. Over 450 students had the opportunity to interview with one of our 12 local business leaders to perfect their skills. Each student was required to come prepared with a resume, references and a cover letter. They were also required to research the company and position for which they applied. Dressing for success and interviewing protocol were evaluated by the business community in order to give feedback to our students. Mrs. Kirkland organized and directed the 3 day event. Guidelines were given to each student and a rubric was used by the interviewer in order to award credit for this activity. The “Top Interview” awards and certificates will be presented at the end of the year banquet on May 10. Submitted by Michelle Harris The Academy of Visual and Performing Arts had their Thematic Learning Activity (TLA) based on their interdisciplinary unit on “interdependence.” The 9th grade teams continued building on their TLA from last year revolving around Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet. Mrs. Conlon’s Theatre 1 class performed an abridged version of the original play for all of the 9th and 10th grade academy students. Mrs. Soud’s English class prepared artwork and visual projects based around the globe theatre, the characters in the play, and other thematic material. Mrs. Conlon’s Biology classes prepared an array of posters on how science played a vital role in the plot of Romeo & Juliet. The art classes of Mrs. Taylor-Hicks, Mr. Green, and Mr. Runyan made masks and props that were used in the show, and created advertisement style posters for Romeo & Juliet. Mrs. Speicher-Harris’s fashion design classes helped design and create some of the costumes used in the show. The 10th grade teams focused on Dr. Suess as a vehicle for showing how interdependence can affect identity, counter-culture, propaganda, and many other topics. Mr. Runyun’s architecture classes made 3-dimensional models of unique, Suess-like buildings. Mrs. Taylor-Hick’s photography classes made posters on social issues as “propaganda.” Mr. Suter’s ceramics classes created 3dimensional sculptures of Suess characters based on studying Dr. Suess’s life and how his works of propaganda and art affected society. Submitted by Amy Conlon Golden Eagle Gazette Spring 2016 Page 8 VyStar Academy of Business & Finance The VyStar Business & Finance Academy students took learning away from the classroom environment to see business in action with some of our first year students. They enjoyed their annual field trips to the Federal Reserve Bank where they learned about the history of our monetary system and how personal finances can be affected by decisions throughout our society. They also toured the Sally Corporation learning about animatronics and the areas of design, marketing, electronics and more. They also found it interesting how a business can be sparked from a idea made from a presentation in a college speech class and how it has became a thriving company with work around the world.
