April 2017
Message from the Lower School:
Our theme for the month of April is : Confidence
We will study Germany and our theme verse is:
“I can do all things through Christ who gives me
strength.” Philippians 4:13
Please make every effort to get your child to school on
time. Three tardies will result in an early morning
detention.
Each class will be looking for 3 parent volunteers for Field
Day on May 12th. Please contact your child’s teacher if
you are available.
Please remember that carline is a CELL PHONE FREE zone—
for the safety of our students.
Keep in step,
Mrs. Forness
News from Kindergarten:
In April Kindergarten will dye eggs, have an Easter egg hunt,
and learn more about God's great plan for us. We've learned
how Jesus healed people and showed what God is like
through parables and by His own example, and we'll talk
about the cross and resurrection. Bible stories are our
favoritething! After Easter break we will study sea creatures
and aquatic mammals in preparation for our trip to the Sea
Life Aquarium at Concord Mills. It should be fun!

News from 1st Grade:
Our first graders are growing as bright and tall as springtime flowers! So much
is in store for us in April. In Math, we are pros at counting pennies, nickles and
dimes, and soon we'll also learn how to count quarters. We'll continue to work
on subtracting two-digit numbers and will introduce the new skill of rounding
to the nearest ten. Our brilliant group of writers will be reading and writing
different types of poetry as part of our literature study for this month. After we
finish our Social Studies unit on community helpers, we'll dive back into Science
and learn about sound - how it moves, its relation to matter and its many uses. Finally, our Bible stories in April will focus on Jesus' resurrection and the
lessons we can learn from it. The future is bright in first grade!

News from 2nd Grade:
News from TK:
Second Graders are learning the Lord's Prayer and how Moses
continued to trust in God and hear his instructions. We have
discussed the "Passover" and what it means. We will be talking about the Resurrection as well, and the great sacrifice our
God made for us.
What a Wonderful World! Is the Transitional Kindergarten
theme for April. We will be exploring the world of animals
and learning how to protect and take care of them. We will
dive into water worlds and learn about sea creatures. The
week of Earth Day we will plant flowers and learn about the
importance of taking care or the Earth. We will spend the
month of April learning about Jesus’ Triumphant Entrance
into Jerusalem through His death, Resurrection and the time
He spent on earth after His resurrection.
In reading, we are going to be starting a unit titled "America's
People" showing how America is made up of diverse
groups. In Social Studies we will also be looking at immigrants and how they shaped America. Science topics will include matter and what it is and how plants grow. We have a
field trip planned with Kindergarten for the Sea-life Aquarium
at Concord Mills in April.

News from 3rd Grade:
Back in January, third grade won the Step It Up campaign challenge, and is excited to celebrate with a Sky
High jump party in April! In science, we are learning
about the weather and planets. In social studies, we
are continuing to learn about influential figures during
the Civil War, and are working on our interactive notebooks. In reading, we are progressing through
"Charlotte's Web". In English, we are finishing our
sound poems. We are looking forward to our Easter
party, and celebrating the resurrection of our Savior.
Happy April! He is risen indeed!

News from 4th Grade:
School is almost out. Can you believe it? Before that
happens, we still have a few things to cover. In reading, we completed The Freedom Train by Dorothy
Sterling. Though the book was a difficult read the
students dug deep, and we had many discussions. We
will conclude our reading this year with Old Yeller.
In English we studied about colorful adjectives and
adverbs and irregular verbs. In writing we wrote Tall
Tales. In April, we will study about sentences,
phrases, and clauses. On April 6, we will have an
Easter egg hunt with our little buddies. We are definitely excited about the things to come.
News from 5th Grade:
In 5th grade, we will work on nonfiction:
text features, cause and effect, finding evidence when reading, and more! We will
learn about light energy and body systems.
In math, we will continue to work on problem solving skills. We will spend some time
on test taking strategies in preparation for
the Terra Nova tests. We are writing plays
and acting them out for our classmates.
We are also working on organizational
skills to get ready for middle school!
