_____________________________________ Why Did Jesus Have to Die for Our Sins? _____________________________________ God exists. Genesis 1:1: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” God is infinite. Psalm 90:2: “Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.” Psalm 147:5: “Great is our Lord and mighty in power; his understanding has no limit.” Jeremiah 23:24: “‘Who can hide in secret places so that I cannot see them?’ declares the Lord. ‘Do not I fill heaven and earth?’ declares the Lord.” God is holy. Isaiah 6:3: “And they were calling to one another: ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.’” Revelation 4:8: “Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under its wings. Day and night they never stop saying: ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come.’” God is righteous. Nehemiah 9:32–33: “Now therefore, our God, the great God, mighty and awesome, who keeps his covenant of love, do not let all this hardship seem trifling in your eyes—the hardship that has come on us, on our kings and leaders, on our priests and prophets, on our ancestors and all your people, from the days of the kings of Assyria until today. In all that has happened to us, you have remained righteous; you have acted faithfully, while we acted wickedly.” 2 Thessalonians 1:6: “God is just: He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you.” TEACHER RESOURCE SHEET 2A UNIT 4-2 LESSON 25 437 _____________________________________ Why Did Jesus Have to Die for Our Sins? _____________________________________ Therefore, God is infinitely holy and just. Furthermore, God speaks out of the character of what he is. Numbers 23:19: “God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?” God spoke the law. Exodus 20:1–17: “And God spoke all these words: ‘I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me. . . .’” Therefore, the law is in the heart of God and is a reflection of God’s character, since it is holy and good. Romans 7:12: “So then, the law is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous and good.” Furthermore, to break the law of God is to offend him, since it is his law that we break. This sin results in an infinite offense because God is infinite. Furthermore, it is also right that God punish the law breaker. To not punish the law breaker (sinner) is to allow an offense against his holiness to be ignored. Amos 2:4: “This is what the Lord says: ‘For three sins of Judah, even for four, I will not relent. Because they have rejected the law of the Lord and have not kept his decrees, because they have been led astray by false gods, the gods their ancestors followed.’” Romans 4:15: “. . . because the law brings wrath. And where there is no law there is no transgression.” TEACHER RESOURCE SHEET 2B UNIT 4-2 LESSON 25 439 _____________________________________ Why Did Jesus Have to Die for Our Sins? _____________________________________ God says that the person who sins must die (be punished). The wages of sin is death. Ezekiel 18:4: “For everyone belongs to me, the parent as well as the child—both alike belong to me. The one who sins is the one who will die.” Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” The sinner needs to escape the righteous judgment of God, or he or she will face damnation. Romans 1:18: “The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness.” Matthew 25:46: “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.” But no sinner can undo an infinite offense, since to please God and make things right he or she must obey the law, which is the standard of God’s righteous character. Galatians 2:16: “Know that a person is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no one will be justified.” Galatians 2:21: “I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!” TEACHER RESOURCE SHEET 2C UNIT 4-2 LESSON 25 441 _____________________________________ Why Did Jesus Have to Die for Our Sins? _____________________________________ But the sinner cannot fulfill the law because he or she is sinful (in the flesh). Romans 8:3: “For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh.” Since the sinner cannot fulfill the law and satisfy God, it follows that only God can do this. This is simple logic. If we are unable to fulfill the law, then we will be punished by it. But, since God desires us to be saved, the law must be satisfied. Since we cannot keep the law and it must be satisfied, the only One capable of keeping the law must keep the law: God. Jesus is God in flesh. John 1:1, 14: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. . . . The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” Colossians 2:9: “For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form.” Jesus was also a man under the law. 1 Timothy 2:5: “For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus.” Galatians 4:5–6: “. . . to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, ‘Abba, Father.’” TEACHER RESOURCE SHEET 2D UNIT 4-2 LESSON 25 443 __________________________________ _____________________________________ Why Did Jesus Have to Die for Our Sins? _____________________________________ Jesus became sin for us and bore our sins in his body on the cross, thus fulfilling the law. 2 Corinthians 5:21: “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” 1 Peter 2:24: “‘He himself bore our sins’ in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; ‘by his wounds you have been healed.’” Romans 8:3–4: “For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.” Therefore, salvation is by grace through faith, since it came not by our keeping the law, but by Jesus, God in flesh, who fulfilled the law and died in our place. Ephesians 2:8–9: “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.” Galatians 3:13: “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: ‘Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole.’” Ephesians 5:2: “. . . and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” (adapted from “Why Did Jesus Have to Die for Our Sins” by Matthew Slick with his permission, from www.carm.org/doctrine/Jesusdieforsins.htm) TEACHER RESOURCE SHEET 2E UNIT 4-2 LESSON 25 445 1.“Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the , or by what you heard?” (Galatians 3:2) 2.“After beginning by means of the Spirit, are you now trying to by means of the ?” (Galatians 3:3) 3.“Does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you by the , or by your what you of the ?” (Galatians 3:5) 4.“He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the through Christ Jesus, so that by we might receive the of the Spirit.” (Galatians 3:14) 5.“Because you are his , God sent the Spirit of his into our , NO MORE CHAINS NAME FILL IN the blanks for these verses from Galatians. the Spirit who calls out, ‘Abba, Father.’” (Galatians 4:6) 6.“For through the Spirit we eagerly await by faith the we for which .” (Galatians 5:5) 7.“So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not the desires of the .” (Galatians 5:16) 8.“For the desires what is to the 9.“But if you are to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is .” (Galatians 5:17) by the Spirit, you are 10. “But the of the , under the is , , , , , .
