" Be a Ught Unto the Nations"
PASTOR'S COLUMN
If I read my calendar correctlyand it IS hard to read any calendar
correctly-so swift is the essence of
time-this is the December issue of
the Outlook. The very essence of the
Judeo-Christian faith and of Christmas
is giving. God gave life in the first
place. Abraham was willing to give
his son, Isaac; Moses gave his life
in obedience to God's call to lead the
Israelites. A primary principle of Biblical
faith is "It is more blessed to give,
than to receive." This is also a statement of the nature of life, of reality
itself. While the foregoing verse is
often quoted at offering time in worship, Christ was not talking about
money, but the giving of oneself as a
person in service to others. Psychologists tell us. that givers are the happy,
well adjusted people. Of course, we
can give without loving, but we cannot
love without giving.
Christmas is shortly upon us. Are we
going to give only to those who give
to us, to only those we deem worthy;
or will we give because we love, and because there is need on the part of the
recipient? Will we let the commercialization of Christmas kill or stymie its
spirit? 1 hope not. The poets' observation of the human scene is especially
applicable at this sacred season:
"The world ;s too mu.:h with us;
lale and soon,
Getting and spending, we lay waste
our powers:
Lillie we see in Nature that is ours;
We have given our hearts away,
a sordid boon!"
We can maintain our balance and a
Biblical perspective on life by remembering at this and all seasons that Christmas is not so much activit y, as it is
an essential s pirit, the spirit of giving .
God gave His Son. His Son gave his
life. What will you give? In life, to
whomever needs it? How each one of
us answers that question determines
the extent of one's happiness and fulfillment.
A minister had just finished his
fundraising sermon and was greeting
worshippers in the nanhex. A somewhat irate young women shook his
hand and said. "Why, to hear you tell
it, the life of faith is simply, 'give,
give, give!'"
"Young lady," her pastor replied,
"That is the best definition of the
Judeo-Christian faith that I have ever
heard!"

CHRISTMAS SALE A
SELLOUT
At I o'clock, Saturday, December 6,
the tables at the Point Lookout Community Church bazaar were loaded.
At 5 p.m. they were practically empty.
That's proof-positive that the sale was
a success. Practically every member of
the Ladies Guild worked herself to the
exhaustion point, before, during and
after the big event. Of course, Regina
Davis, the project director, had prepared everything in advance. It was
a great shock and loss to everyone
that Regina was in a bed at the hospital
and therefore not on the floor, Saturday, December 6. Frances Fernandez
was a wonderful substitute. A loud
hurrah should go to her. She worked
seemingly lirelessly as did Edith Hammer
and her sisters at that baked goods
table.
There were many prize winners. As
we remember, some of them were
Helen Curtin (the 23 lb. turkey), Agnes
Keenen (the $25 King Kullen gift certificate), Emily Skirbe (painting by Dr.
Wertheimer), Anne Gallagher (the 51.
Mary's blanket), Kathy Mahoney
(money tree), Ms. Anderson and Ms.
Kiernan each a quilt, etc., etc. Of
course, there were 44 more winners at
the Barter table.
The President, Isabelle Griffin and
1.11 the ladies say, "Thank you, friend s.
You made our efforts worthwhile."

CARL BECOMES OR. CARL
SO YEARS AGO
On Sunday afternoon, December 14,
from 2 to 5 p.m., our Dr. Wenheimer
will be honored by an Open House
Party at the Olde Firehouse. Plans are
being formulated and the event no
doubt will occur before this edition
comes out.
However. this we know-that way
back in 1930 in Germany, Carl
Wertheimer became Dr. Carl
Wertheimer. Then in 1935, he and his
wife. Else, came to America. Their
family has grown to two daughters,
Susan and Dr. Alice and 4 grandchildren (the Marcotes to us).
Dr. Wertheimer has been a deputy
chief with the Pt. Lookout-Lido Beach
Fire Dept. for 20 years. Needless to
say, he attends many patients here at
the Point (where he has resided since
1949). And, he has been known to
make house calls. He also still has an
active practice in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.
We congratulate him for his achievements and his patients for being so
lucky!
THANK YOU
Many thanks to the men of the
Rescue Squad for their prompt and
excellent response to the Kennedy
house on Thanksgiving Eve. Al Bloodgood is doing well and is home from
the hospital. God bless everyone.

SOUTH PACIFIC
It truly was "Some Enchanted Evening"-a 3 day stand pr.esented by Long
Beach Catholic School at the Lindell
School Nov. 21-23.
The "Poi nt" took special pride in
our stars, Jeanette Barna (Nettie) and
William White (Emile De Becque) who
did such splendid jobs in the lead
roles.
We would also like to congratulate
our other stars from the Point and
Lido-Kenny Ozgercin who played
"Stewpot", Scott McDonnell as Comdr.
Harbison and Allison (who shared the
part with Elizabeth O'Brien) & Matthew
Brennan as the children. Then there
were the Point Lookout Sailors; Frank
Boyle, Meghan Driscoll, Laura Hogan
and Irene Reilly. The Nurses from the
PoiO! included Kathy and Terr y
Mahoney and our leading Nurse, Mary
Stillwagon. The song and dance routines by these groups were great.
Also of noteworthy talent in this
ambitious production were the other
stars from Long Beach who were outstanding in the parts of Luther Billis
(Brian Forkin), Captain Brackett
(James Halley), Bloody Mary (Teresa
Golia) and Lt. Cable (Steven Gormley).
All of this would have been impossible were it not for Mrs. Virginia
Kelly (a new member of our community) as producer and director and
Mrs. Bette O'Brien as Musical Director.
These two LBCS teachers voluntarily
rehearsed and coached the children for
countless hours. The end product was
well worth the effort.
We can't forget to thank Mr. Don
Kelly and Nancy and Diane Kelly for
their expert Stage Management.

CHRISTMAS GREETINGS
FROM THE OVER 50'S
The Over 50's are very happy at this
time. One reason is that Anne McGoldrick, the president, is back again
and appears well. Another reason for
the happiness is that their Christmas
plans seem to be realizing. On the 17th
a large group will be bused into the
city as planned. Then on the 21st
a cocktail party will be held at the
Point View Inn.
However, by the laws of nature,
a few members will be missing this
Christmas-Mae Cunningham, Mary
Schmiemann, Miriam Samson, Julia
Goodhart, May Healy. Frank Sutherland, Jim Hayden, Adele Boyle and
Ralph Gilbert. Memories of these
members and of other years will be in
the hearts of all.

The Magi had their star in the East,
but Pt. Lookout has many stars in
the form of the beautiful tree lights
on Lido Blvd. We thank everyone who
donated time and money to brighten
our Chistmas season. The Holiday
Tree Lighting Raffle was won by
Martha Paulonis-a weekend for two
at the St. Moritz on the Park, a
theater show and dinner-what a great
unex.pected Christmas present!
Congratu lations to the Long Beach
Catholic School on their outstanding
production of "South Pacific" held at
the Lindell School. The two leading
stars were our own Jeanette Barna and
Billy White. Lookout Broadway!
Jerry Boyle hosted the Thursday
Knighters Poker Club and their wives
on December 3rd at the Garden City
Country Club. The holiday spirit was
shared by Helen and Charlie Brockman, Mel and Audrey Brown, Mary
and Peter Donoghue, Sylvia and Joe
Hamerschlag, Elizabeth and John Kane,
Sue and Ivar Malmstrom, Tori and
Pat Mercuri, Kate and Mike Ripple
and Lillian and Tony Schneible.
We are fortunate to have a collection
of original ethchings by Mary Hanrahan
on view at our Pt. Lookout Library.
They are based on local scenes, namely,
"PI. Lookout", "Sailing", "Windy
Day at the Beach" and her latest,
"The Inlet-Pt. Lookout" which received
an award at the South Shore Art
League Ex.hibition at the No. Merrick
Public Library in September.
It's logical for PI. Lookouters to
vacation during the winter as we have a
built-in summer vacation with our beach,
as Ann Hearn of Baldwin Ave. will
testify-recently, Ann and George
were in San Diego. While George was
attending to business, Ann wen( to the
beach but to Ann, the best beach in
the world is right here in our own
back yard! -Elea nor Dugan visited
Mary and Ray at their new home in
Florida-Janie and Tom O'Cailahan
went to St. Martins-Mary Lou and
George McPhillips went to Puerto
Rico-John McCrink and family came
from No. Carolina to visit Mom &
Pop on Lynbrook Avenue for Thanksgiving-We wish Mrs. Crowley of
Cedarhurst Ave. good health and happiness in her new home in Florida.
Congratulations to Mary and Andy
Richter on the birth of their baby
girl...Nora Larsen Kennedy was christened in S1. Brigid's Church at Westbury, Saturday, November 29. She is
the daughter of Bernard and Lisa Barry
Kennedy. Lisa's sister, Karen, and
Bernard's brother, Eugene, were the
godparents.

CI VI C ASSOCIATION
By Sylvia Hamerschfag
On December 4th, the Civic Association invited all resident of Point Lookout to a meeting at the Recreation

he stressed [he point thaI the best
deterrent is neighborly cooperation.
President Anne Marie McGoldrick
reported that the two variances

January 14th and that she would keep
the people advised by posting any

FISHING CLUB NEWS
By Roland Donohue
On Saturday evening, November
15th, fishing club members and their
guests had a whale of a time al the
Old Firehouse. We had our fall dance.
and those who attended a few pleasant
hours dancing to the lilting strains of
Raymond Oreggia and his orchestra.
Congratulations to Ernie Davis, the
dance chairman, for a job well done.
He was ably assisted in the task by
Matt Neary, Bill Betz, Kirk Guyton,
Mel Brown, and Lou Shennan. We
would also like to thank Matt Neary.
Charlie Brockman, Joe Harmerschlag,
Mel Brown, Kirk Guyton, Carroll Parker, Dr. Pat Mercuri, Lou Sherman,
Dennis Gannon, Ernie Davis, and
Gelo's for donating the door prizes.
Last but not least, we would like to
express our appreciation to Sylvia
Hamerschlag who did a beautiful job
in making up the baskets of cheer.
The only unpleasant event of the entire evening occurred when the president of the club was locked out of
the dance in the biting cold for about
fifteen minutes. Despite my frantic
pounding on the doors and windows,
no one paid attention to me until our
newest member, Tony Schneible of
Garden City Avenue came to the rescue
and let this shivering soul back into
the place of fun and frolic. What
really bothered me was the fact thai I
was not even missed!
At our November meeting, the Rescue Company gave a demonstration of
CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation)
Many thanks to Joe Catano of the
fire department who conducted the
meeting.
Bei:ause of the holidays we will not
be having a December meeting. Our
next meeting will be on Tuesday,
January 27th, al the Point View Inn.
Here's wishing everyone a Merry
Christmas, and may you all have fish
on your hooks and crabs in your basket in 1981!

Recently, we read an interesting
article in the New York Times. The
writer exto lled the virtues of the cleanli ness of many cities , even very poor
ones, arou nd the world. He contrasted
the cleanli ness o f Montreal and Vancouver with the terri ble lack of it in
such cities as New York and Chicago.
As he continued contrasting, we fea red
he might mention Point Lookout a nd
our supply of bottles, cans, papers,
damaged wa lks and even dog feces
around tow n.
Before some other writer gelS around
to us, let's clea n up! Let's take pride
in Point Lookout! Remember"CLEANLINESS IS NEXT TO
GODLINESS"!
