New Gale Databases Mean More Info.
The SPCC Libraries
have acquired four new
databases from Gale:
Cengage Learning.
These databases may
be accessed from the
NC LIVE Quicklinks
page, found on the library homepage.
Additional databases
mean more researching
options for the students,
faculty and staff of
SPCC.
The new databases
cover a wide variety of
topics and help round
out the databases that
are already offered, by
SPCC Libraries.
GREENR database
focuses on articles about
the environment, energy
and natural resources.
Issues are listed and
specific topics appear
underneath. The database makes searching
easy by breaking the
results down into categories such as Academic
Journals, Primary Resources, News and Magazines.
Science in Context
database organizes topics into categories such
as biographies, chemistry, health and medi-
cine, and physics and astronomy. Specific topics
are organized by academic journal, news and
trustworthy websites.
Literature Resource
Center database has author biographies and literary criticisms on poems
and novels.
U.S. History in Context
database is organized like
Science in Context, with
categories broken down
into individual topics.
Such categories available
for searching are biographies, economics, Native Americans and wars
and conflicts.
Love Your Library
The SPCC Libraries
are inviting students,
faculty and staff to write
why they love their library on colorful paper
hearts. These hearts will
be displayed for the entire SPCC community to
see.
The Horne staff is inviting students to come
into the library February
10-14th to make a necklace or bracelet out of
ribbon and beads. A
variety of silver heartshaped charms will be
available to decorate the
jewelry.
Carpenter Library is
hosting blind datesbooks covered in brown
paper with a brief description of the plot on
the paper cover. Once a
patron checks out the
book, s/he can see what
book they just checked
out.
Customer service is
vital to the SPCC Libraries and the staff wants to
make sure that the students, faculty and staff of
SPCC are receiving the
assistance they need
and enjoying the services they have to offer.

New Research Tutorials-Research Made Easier
Having trouble navigating a
database? Anyone who is offcampus or unable to drop by
the library for some assistance
may access research tutorials
that are online.
There are research tutorials
for Academic Search Complete, Credo Reference, Films
on Demand, Literary Reference
Center Plus, Opposing Viewpoints in Context and Safari
Books Online.
Tutorials may be accessed
from the libraries’ homepage
by clicking on ‘Research Tutorials’ under the Tutorial heading.
These short tutorials, less
than 3 minutes each, are a
quick and efficient way to learn
the basics for navigating the
databases.
These tutorials are organized in a LibGuide and the
titles of the databases are in
large boxes. Click on the box
with the database needed and
a video will appear.
Of course, anyone who
would like a live tutorial should
come to the library and request
some assistance with navigating a database. All the library staff are ready and able
to assist.
How a Library is Like an Animal Cell
Kacey Rudock, a current Union County Early
College student, created a poster likening an
animal cell to a library for her biology class’
Cell Simile project.
Kacey found the library full of inspiration.
“While brainstorming at the SPCC library I was
uninspired until, while becoming increasingly
aware of my lovely surroundings, the obvious
course of action struck me: Compare it to a library! “

Happy St. Valentine’s Day Massacre?
Valentine’s Day is celebrated February 14th with cards,
flowers, chocolate and romantic dinners, but what about the
St. Valentine’s day Massacre?
In 1929, the streets of Chicago were ruled by gangs, in-
cluding the infamous Al Capone.
On February 14, 1929, seven members of a rival gang,
led by George “Bugs” Moran,
were found dead in a garage
on Chicago’s North Side.
Al Capone was never officially linked to the massacre,
although it is thought that he
was the mastermind.

Spring 2014 Vendor Showcase
There will soon be new books
in the SPCC libraries’ collection.
The Spring Vendor Showcase on
January 10th in Carpenter Library invited faculty to come to
the library and meet with a representative from Yankee Book
Peddler (YBP), an affiliate of
Baker and Taylor Publishing.
Faculty worked with the YBP
representative to search for
books in the company’s catalog
that will supplement classroom
instruction and provide needed
resources for students to conduct research for specific assignments.
Selected resources will be
ordered and on the shelves by
spring to enable students to
use the new resources for their
final papers and projects.
How a Library is Like an Animal Cell
(continued from pg 2)
Kacey enjoys spending time in Carpenter
Library and takes advantage of its many resources. She is friendly with the helpful staff,
as can be noted by the comical way she used
pictures of Library Director Grant LeFoe, Circulation Manager Marion Sabin and Information Services Librarian Dana Glauner in
her poster project.
Thank you Kacey for sharing this with us.
