ANNUAL REVIEW 2016
We are one of 322 World
Trade Centers in 89 Countries!
The World Trade Centers Association (WTCA) in New York City oversees 322
World Trade Centers located in North America, Central and South America,
Europe, Africa and the Middle East and Asia and the Pacific. These exclusive
WTC branded properties and WTC trade service organizations are located in
89 countries, connect 15,000 professional staff members and represent
more than 750,000 business members worldwide.
The WTCA stimulates trade and investment opportunities for commercial
property developers, economic development agencies and international
businesses looking to connect globally and prosper locally. The WTCA
serves as an “international ecosystem” of global connections, iconic
properties and integrated trade services under the umbrella of a
prestigious brand, dedicated to:
•encouraging the expansion of world trade
•promoting international business relationships, and
•fostering mutual assistance and cooperation among members.
More than a building or an organization, a world trade center (WTC)
brings together businesses and government agencies involved
in international trade, provides essential trade services and
stimulates the economy of the region it serves. A WTC puts all
the services associated with global commerce under one roof.
A WTC address gives a business prime and continuous access
and exposure to all the services, organizations and individuals
essential for success in world trade.
“The World Trade Center of Greater Philadelphia is a proven
leader among our global WTC network, providing value added trade and investment services to the vibrant Greater
Philadelphia region.“

Letter from the Board Chairman
There are a total of 322 world trade centers around the world and 40 of them are in
China. The World Trade Centers Association is a powerful global network of international
businesses and organizations “looking to connect globally and prosper locally”. I’m proud
to be the Board Chairman of one of North America’s most active World Trade Centers – the
World Trade Center of Greater Philadelphia (WTCGP). I can tell you first hand of the economic
power that the WTCGP generates in Southeastern Pennsylvania and Southern Jersey.
Each year the numbers speak for themselves – to date the WTCGP has helped companies
generate $1.6 billion in incremental global sales. Impressive.
Our region is well positioned to benefit from increased international trade. The Greater Philadelphia Export Plan, a
collaborative initiative among the Economy League of Greater Philadelphia, the WTCGP, and area business and economic
development leaders, launched a roadmap in 2016 to build upon the $32 billion in exports originating from Greater
Philadelphia. In terms of markets, China ranks as the third largest for Pennsylvania and the 7th largest for New Jersey.
So when this past June, the WTCGP hosted a meeting at my firm White and Williams, for a delegation of 7 officials from
World Trade Center Tianjin, China – I watched the power of world trade center connections unfold! Eric Cao, WTC Tianjin
Executive Director and Deputy Division Chief, China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, and Zhang Tiejun,
Deputy Director, People’s Government of Tianjin Binhai New Area, set in place the initial steps to explore expanded trade
and investment opportunities between Tianjin, the Binhai New Area and Greater Philadelphia. Participants included
WTCGP members and leaders of Philadelphia’s international business organizations.
Located in northern coastal China, Tianjin is the fourth largest municipality with a total population of more than 15 million
people. Tianjin is a hub city for international shipping and logistics, manufacturing and research and development. Created
in 2009, Tianjin Binhai New Area is located in the coastal region of the Tianjin municipality. Designated by the Chinese
government as a special Free Trade Zone, Binhai has an international seaport, and an international airport and is a
33 minute high-speed train ride from Beijing. There are 141 Global 500 companies with operations in Binhai New Area.
In January 2017, I traveled to WTC Tianjin where I met with the WTC’s leadership, Vice Minister Dai Sheng Guo, Vice
Minister Dijan Yi Min and Zhang Tiejun (who attended our June 2nd meeting in Philadelphia), recently appointed as a highranking health minister in the Tianjin government, with oversight of 6,000 medical institutions. The result? WTCGP and
WTC Tianjin will work more closely together to further strategic business relationships among our members and between
the Sister Cities of Tianjin and Philadelphia. The power of World Trade Center collaboration!
White and Williams has seen, first-hand, the impact
of the WTCGP, the value it provides to its members,
the contribution it makes to the region’s economy.
This is why we have chosen to support the WTCGP as
a sustaining member for the past 8 years. Whether
you are new to international trade and interested in
growing your business, or an established international
company or institution interested in supporting small
and medium-sized exporters, and want to align with
one of the world’s leading World Trade Centers – I
encourage you to become a member of the WTCGP.
All the best,
Chairman Biehn at WTC Tianjin, China.

Letter from the President
In 2017, the WTCGP will mark 15 years as a World Trade Center – it’s been very rewarding for me
to serve as President for the past nine. Over the years, our team has assisted members and client
companies to turn challenges into opportunities and navigate the complexities of global markets.
It’s what we do – we grow trade, supporting the global success of our companies and the economic
growth of the Greater Philadelphia region as a whole.
We prepare this Annual Review to summarize the accomplishments of our past year and to highlight
those key moments, whether at one of our signature events, or at a meeting with invited dignitaries
that define our purpose as a non-profit trade service organization.
Our members and clients rely on the experience and knowledge of our trade specialists to ensure a strategic and successful global
market entry. This past year our Pennsylvania and New Jersey companies registered over $123M in increased export sales. Just a few
of the many success stories include:
• A medical services provider bringing international patients to our region for lifesaving treatments
• A local manufacturer winning a $1.6 million dollar order for its underwater Autonomous Remote Operated Vehicle System
• An organic bug spray company receiving contracts in South America to help combat Zika Virus
• And many more!
Our members’ success is our success. It’s at the heart of what we do.
In fact, there are many more businesses in the Greater Philadelphia region that can and should be exporting – but lack awareness of
the services of organizations such as the WTCGP. This is why we partnered with the Economy League of Greater Philadelphia and area
business and civic leaders, to launch a dynamic regional export strategy - part of a national Brookings Institution/J.P. Morgan Chase
“Global Cities Initiative” to drive economic growth and job creation in major metropolitan areas. It is estimated that implementing the
Greater Philadelphia Export Plan would add $6.3B in annual export value and 35,000 jobs to the Region’s economy.
In addition to accelerating global business growth for international companies, we are proud to serve among Greater Philadelphia’s
thought leaders on trade. It was not surprising that when the United States resumed diplomatic relations with Cuba, the Philadelphia
Inquirer and Philadelphia Business Journal called the WTCGP for a statement. And when a delegation from Greater Washington, DC
Global Cities initiative wanted to explore a World Trade Center trade service model for their export strategy, they also called us.
In 2016, we also welcomed international delegations to the region, from the government of Quebec and the Ambassadors of Vietnam
and Brunei, hosted by the US – ASEAN Business Council, to the Korea International Trade Association and World Trade Center Tianjin,
China. Our commitment to the international business community also includes providing timely and relevant information on the global
economy. For the past 14 years we have presented our Annual Global Business Conference and last year, in addition to a roster of
global experts we featured Governor Jon Huntsman, former Ambassador to China and to Singapore. We were able to introduce these
international leaders to our business community, and, through these powerful connections, opened opportunities for our companies
and future trade and investment with our region.
As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, the WTCGP depends on state and federal support, membership fees and sponsorship dollars to
sustain our trade services and educational programs. At our only fundraising event, our May Annual World Trade Centers Awards and
Celebration, we generated valuable support for our work and recognized individuals and companies shaping the global profile of our
region, honoring Jerry Sweeney, President, CEO and Trustee, Brandywine Realty Trust and member companies of the year Bradford
White Corporation (PA) and Sunhillo (NJ).
The WTCGP invests all of its time and resources into our region’s international business community. I invite you to consider investing in
the WTCGP. There are many opportunities to support us. Become a member, sponsor an event, or consider giving a donation.
I hope you enjoy our look back, and watch us as we move forward with the many events and opportunities we have planned for you as
we turn 15.
Sincerely,
Linda Mysliwy Conlin

The CEOs’ China Operations Club (COC) familiarizes companies with the
nuances of the Chinese market and provides a forum for peer-to-peer sharing
of experiences gained from conducting business in China. With more than 40
member companies, this distinctive, award-winning program allows participants
to share best practices and identify business opportunities in one of the world’s
fastest growing economies. The program will continue to focus on the key
issues surrounding U.S. – China commercial opportunities and trade.
Highlights in 2016:
March: A private COC luncheon with former U.S. Ambassador to China, Governor
Jon Huntsman and U.S. Managing Editor, Financial Times, Gillian Tett.
June: With WTC Tianjin, hosted a Tianjin and Binhai New Area development trade
delegation of businesses, economic development and government officials, and
COC members.
August: China Luncheon and Conference, led by Ambassador Zhang Qiyue,
Consul General of China in New York and PA DCED Secretary Denis Davin with
many Chinese and American businesses.
December: Roundtable on Best Practices for US Companies’ Banking Practices
and Finance Operations by Kok-Chi Tsim, Managing Director, International
Banking, J.P. Morgan Chase.
Past roundtable meetings have focused on:
•Protecting intellectual property
•Sourcing products and selecting vendors
•Developing a risk management strategy
•Overcoming banking and financing issues
•National Committee on US-China Relations China Town Hall
•Marketing Strategies and Sales Tactics
Key to the success of this popular program is its dedicated members and
sponsors. WTCGP would like to thank the principal sponsor of this program,
White and Williams LLP, whose expertise in China provides a continuing resource
for our members. We would also like to thank Devon International Group for
sponsorships of the Club’s social activities.
“In 2016 the CEOs’ China Operations Club once again provided members unique opportunities for networking and
learning to advance their business interests in China. The intimate conversation with former U.S. Ambassador to
China, Governor Jon Huntsman rolling up his sleeves and talking candidly about political and commercial dealings
with China was indeed a highlight. We will endeavor to continue bringing our COC members valuable programs based
on their interests and needs in China to further advance their business. Thanks also to the members for sharing their
experiences and lessons learned to benefit long-time and new COC peer members.”

TRADE MISSIONS AND TRADE SHOWS
Even in this Internet and e-mail era, travel to new markets and sealing business deals
face-to-face remains essential.
Meeting in person plays a pivotal role in negotiating deals, selling products and building long-term
relationships. Trade missions can “fast track” market development, often resulting in immediate sales
orders.
Participating in a trade mission is a cost-effective way to meet potential customers, agents,
distributors and joint venture partners while traveling with like-minded professionals.
Through trade missions, WTCGP provides:
•Pre-mission seminars on business opportunities and cultural considerations before going to the
market
•A discovery consultation to determine a company’s objectives and strategy for the market
•Pre-arranged business matchmaking meetings with potential buyers, distributors and partners
based on your objectives
•Opportunities to meet with key government and industry officials to get their perspective on
in-country opportunities and economic trends
•Networking events to discuss opportunities with fellow trade mission attendees and local
professionals
WTCGP supports, recruits for, and actively promotes the trade missions and trade shows organized
through the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Export Assistance Program.

INBOUND DELEGATION
SUPPORT
Greater Philadelphia is the country’s seventh largest
U.S. metro area by population.
The region enjoys a highly diversified economic base with
pronounced strengths in energy, life sciences, information
and communications technology, green and alternative
energy, nanotechnology, advanced manufacturing and higher
education.
Whether seeking to distribute, identify joint venture partners
or establish facilities in the United States, WTCGP is a
company’s first point of contact when visiting Southeastern
Pennsylvania or Southern New Jersey. WTCGP creates a
custom program for delegations basing the program on each
company’s particular industry and needs.
•We conduct market research, organize business matchmaking meetings and assist with logistics
•We connect companies with trade associations, industry leaders, academic institutions, government
officials and incoming delegation diplomats
•We coordinate meetings with local, state and private sector organizations that specialize in facilitating
inward investment
•We arrange cultural tours and orientation programs
The World Trade Center of Greater Philadelphia has hosted inbound trade delegations from Canada, Greece,
France, Wales, China, Japan, Ukraine, Colombia and Uruguay. For further information on bringing a visiting
delegation to the Greater Philadelphia region, or to register your interest in meeting inbound groups, contact
the WTCGP.
“Having worked in the private sector as an exporter for over 25 years, I am pleased to be able to
assist WTCGP clients in Southeastern Pennsylvania and Southern New Jersey with international
trade counseling and market research. Also, I encourage our clients to participate in overseas trade
missions and shows, and to attend our educational seminars and workshops including export finance.”

EXPORT FINANCE ASSISTANCE AND GLOBAL
BANKING SERVICES
The Export Finance Initiative provides a roadmap to export finance programs and global banking services,
accessible through the area’s leading international lenders with the backing of government agencies like
Export-Import Bank of the U.S. (EXIM Bank) and the U.S Small Business Administration (SBA).
Since the signing of a City/State Partnership Agreement between WTCGP and the EXIM Bank, this partnership has expanded
to include the U.S. Small Business Administration, the area’s leading trade finance lenders and insurance brokers, the City of
Philadelphia, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the State of New Jersey.
This program provides information on accessing capital to fill export orders, minimizing risk by obtaining export credit
insurance, developing a competitive advantage by offering financing or credit terms to prospective international buyers and
accessing global banking services to facilitate and ease cross-border trade.
WTCGP would like to thank the principal sponsors of this
program:
•HSBC
•UPS
•PNC Bank
•Wells Fargo
•TD Bank
“We at EXIM Bank are proud to be able to call the World
Trade Center of Greater Philadelphia one of our best
Regional Export Promotion Program partners. The work
they do is instrumental in helping U.S. exporters gain
major footholds in international markets. We value
this relationship and the support the WTCGP provides
in helping us reach those small business exporters
who directly benefit from the use of our trade finance
products.”

IMPORT AND GLOBAL PROCUREMENT
ASSISTANCE
Companies today are faced with both challenges and opportunities in the rapidly expanding global
marketplace.
Suppliers worldwide have the potential to increase a product’s value by lowering input costs. U.S. companies, for example, may
be able to find lower-priced components that offer a competitive edge, or new products that complement an existing product
line. Just as when sourcing within the U.S. domestic market, it is important to find reliable and credible suppliers in foreign
markets.
Importing has its challenges, such as managing time constraints, cultural differences, and arranging trade financing,
transportation and customs clearance. WTCGP can assist in developing your import strategy, identifying reliable suppliers, and
helping to implement systems to ensure a total supply chain solution.
Our global network and professional expertise help companies navigate different business and legal systems, U.S. regulatory
and customs issues as well as logistical obstacles.
THE WTCGP:
•Researches overseas markets
•Understands import compliance and acquisition procedures
•Identifies and manages overseas suppliers
•Mitigates risk by facilitating trade finance and foreign
currency tools
•Navigates international transport and establishes
relationships with logistics companies
•Determines precise import duties, tariffs and quotas

PARTNERING
WITH EDUCATIONAL
INSTITUTIONS
The Greater Philadelphia region is home to more than 150
colleges, universities and community colleges, making the
higher education sector one of the most significant in the region.
Accordingly, this industry is a key economic driver in terms of
jobs provided to the region’s citizens. In addition, the thriving
academic hub of Southeastern Pennsylvania and Southern New
Jersey attracts start-up businesses, particularly in the high-tech,
bio-tech and medical device industries. Finally, employers outside
higher education appreciate the well-educated workforce offered
by the region. As a result of these factors, businesses often look
favorably on the Greater Philadelphia region as a potential area
for relocation or business expansion.
The Southeastern Pennsylvania and Southern New Jersey
university community collectively is a longstanding partner with
WTCGP. There is synergy between our work and many of this
region’s finest educational institutions: universities that partner
with WTCGP have a strong commitment to international business
education, and WTCGP’s mission to advance the global growth of
companies in the region is tied to building a talented pool of welleducated and globally-aware employees for those companies.
“Drexel University shares the World
Trade Center of Greater Philadelphia’s
vision of Philadelphia as a world-class
city and recognizes the importance
of strategic partnerships to this end.
What better way to draw companies and
international investors to Philadelphia
than to include major universities in the
region’s public/private global export
and business strategies? Drexel’s
partnership with the WTCGP supports our
commitment to the growth of the city as
a vital transportation, innovation and education hub and the dynamic
development of opportunities for our students and faculty in cutting
edge research and experiential learning.”
John A. Fry
President, Drexel University
WTCGP also assists university partners with international
student recruitment and global business curriculum
development. Many such programs are customized for each
specific institution and student population.
Currently, WTCGP has partnerships with Drexel University,
Arcadia University, Stockton University, Temple University
Center for International Business, Education and Research
(CIBER) and the Villanova University School of Business.
WTCGP and universities partner to:
•Leverage international expertise and connections of WTCGP
to broaden students’ exposure to global markets
•Assist universities in recruiting international students
•Collaborate with faculty to support global initiatives and seek
out ways to partner with higher education institutions on
international programs
•Assist with development of global business curriculum
•Identify internship opportunities for students
•Prepare students to excel in a global economy and prepare
the next generation of business leaders
WTCGP’s collaborations with these outstanding academic
institutions offer area students meaningful opportunities to
learn the intricacies of global trade from experts in these areas –
government and trade officials with crucial knowledge of national
and international trade policies, as well as business leaders who
offer pragmatic, tried-and-true business wisdom from the real
world.

Our partnerships with academic institutions are deliberately
student-centric: When working with this population, WTCGP
educates students about the value of global competitiveness,
cultural knowledge and international trade. The end result:
WTCGP plays a central role in educating and creating future
business leaders.
“Arcadia is recognized nationally as a leader in study abroad and a
pioneer in international education. The School of Global Business at
Arcadia University is proud to sponsor Pennsylvania International
Week on our beautiful campus where our students have the
opportunity to participate in the interaction between Authorized
Trade Representatives and regional business executives seeking
to determine market demand or export their products to over
30 countries around the globe. Arcadia values the tremendous
opportunity this partnership will provide our students, staff, faculty,
and centers around the world.”
