Your College Your Voice
Being Part of a Host Family
These are the expectations we have of you and
your host. Keep them in mind throughout the
stay to help make the time you share with your
host family enjoyable, safe and worthwhile.
If, at any point during the stay, you feel that
someone in your home, be that your host
family or another student, is not meeting our
expectations you need to talk to them about it. If
there is no change after a conversation, you need
to talk to the international team about it.
What do Canterbury College and Nacka

Your ID and Bus Pass
Lanyards
On your first day in College you will receive your
student card and lanyard. This must be worn
around your neck at all times when you are in
College. If you forget your card, you can visit the
Registry Team by reception for a temporary sticker.
If you lose your card or lanyard you can buy a new
one for £1.50 at the Finance Desk by reception.
Bus Passes
If you have been provided with a bus pass for
your time in Canterbury please take care of it at
all times. It is your responsibility to look after it
and to pay for a new one it if it is lost. This can be
done at Canterbury Bus Station and can be very
expensive.
Whilst crime is low in Canterbury, it does happen
and the most common crime is pick-pocketing or
theft. If your pass is stolen, you must report it as
soon as possible to the Police Station and get a
Crime Number. You will then only need to pay £25
for a replacement at the Bus Station.
We advise you to keep a close eye on all your
belongings when out and about in Canterbury – do
not give a thief the opportunity.
Enrichment
The timetable
What to do if you will be absent
You will be given a timetable of your enrichment
activities during your first week. On there will be
details of meeting times and places as well as a
little information about where you will be going.
It is a good idea to look ahead at these activities
and plan how you want to enjoy them. For some
of the trips you will be given a guided tour, during
others you will be free to explore and some will
include a little of both. Make sure you know what
you want to see before you arrive so you can
make the most of your time there.
Just as with the rest of your studies at
Canterbury College, we expect you to be present
at every enrichment activity. If you know you will
be absent in advance of the day, please let the
international team know. If you are ill on the day
and cannot attend, you must text the emergency
phone number – +44(0)7736699822 – stating
your name and reason for absence as soon as
possible.
What to expect
The enrichment activities are not all directly
linked to your courses but they are all
opportunities for you to learn something new.
Come with an open mind and a sense of curiosity
and you won’t be disappointed.
Consent Forms
If you are planning on extending your stay at any
enrichment activity or taking an overnight trip
during your time in Canterbury, your parents in
Sweden MUST complete the relevant consent
forms and send them to the international team
at least 2 day before you go. Your host family
must also send us an email with details of the
trip so we know they are aware of your plans. We
ask that we have all of the necessary information
at least 2 days before the trip and it is important
that you stick to this.
Health & Wellbeing
What to do when you’re not well
Safeguarding
Should you ever feel that you need to visit a doctor
whilst you are in Canterbury then you can go along
to any GP Surgery and register as a temporary
patient. Make sure you take your European Health
Insurance Card (EHIC) with you and the details of
your doctor in Sweden.
There is a GP Surgery opposite the entrance to
Canterbury College (New Dover Road Surgery)
and their telephone number is +44(0)1227 462197.
Use this number to book an appointment. You may
prefer to visit your host family’s doctor, which is
also fine.
Remember that doctors in the UK cannot
guarantee seeing you on the same day, particularly
if your condition isn’t serious. Ring up as early as
possible to see when the available appointments
are.
If you ever feel you are unable to attend College
due to ill health, you must telephone your tutors
in the morning to let them know you will not be
attending. If would also be helpful if you email the
international team.
“Safeguarding” is the term used to describe the
legal and human obligations we all share to
help keep Canterbury College a safe place for
everyone who studies, works and visits here. Any
student can always approach any member of
staff about Safeguarding and they will listen to
you and act upon what you say. You can contact
the Safeguarding team anytime using their email
address: [email protected]
