Pastor Beth - First Christian Church

Beaumont, TX
Volume 29 June 9, 2017
Dear Church Family,
Happy anniversary! You may be wondering who has an anniversary today. It’s me! My first day at First
Christian Church was June 15, 2015. It’s amazing that it has already been 2 years. Time flies when you
are having fun! We’ve accomplished a great deal together, but there is plenty more to do! Thanks for
inviting me to be a part of your journey.
Lately, I’ve been spending more and more time thinking about conflict and how to resolve it. With the
shooting in Virginia yesterday, the subject is really at the forefront of my mind. Conflicts are going to
happen in this world (even among Christians). So as Christians, I think it is our responsibility to model
appropriate ways to resolve conflict. So, here are a few things I’ve learned about resolving conflict over
the years.
1. Stop and pray about it. You may find that your problem is no longer an issue when you give it
over to God. Also, stopping to pray may prevent unkind words from being said. It’s also hard to be
mad at another person when you have honestly prayed for that person!

3. Ask questions. Research the issue. Make sure you have all the facts before getting upset
about an issue. Many people in our society today get all worked up over a brief snippet of something
they saw on the Internet or a teaser for the 10 o’clock news before hearing the whole story. That’s
how issues get blown all out of proportion.
5. Confront the individual you have a conflict with personally. If you are afraid to talk to a
person one on one about an issue, then maybe the issue is not as important as you thought.
7. Speak the truth in love. Anger and hurt feelings can often be defused by kind words and civil
tones even when a critique is being offered.
9. Explain, don’t blame. Conflict resolution occurs most often when participants explain their concerns without blaming the other person. We all know that as soon as blaming starts defensive walls
go up that are hard to tear down.
10.
I could write a whole book on this subject. But, this subject can be whittled down to 2 perhaps trite principles: Do unto others… and W.W.J.D. (What would Jesus Do?)
Have a great week! Let’s be God’s hands and feet!
Blessings,
Pastor Beth
