Research fellowship on Augmented Reality for Wearable See-through Displays - Università Ca' Foscari Venezia (Italian law 30 December 2010, n.240, art. 22) Description The Department of Environmental Sciences, Informatics and Statistics at Università Ca' Foscari Venezia invites applications for a fellowship in: Augmented Reality for Wearable See-through Displays. Abstract: The recent availability of affordable see-through wearable displays has fostered the development of several new interfaces and applications. Some of them take the classical augmented reality path, by seeking the blending of physical objects with overlaid 3D models or textual data. Some, on the other hand follow a different paradigm of augmentation where the spatial integration between real world and data overlay is dropped. This is the case, for instance, with most applications based on Google Glass (or similar) hardware, where text and images partially share the field of view of the user, but are not pinpointed to physical features. Such a difference marks the shift from a cooperative see-through mode, that characterizes classical augmented reality, to a competitive overlay, where the user attention is actually contended between real objects and displayed data. The objective of the research will be to study and compare the two types of augmented reality and specifically to evaluate the role of different properties of the competitive overlay, including the level of occlusion, the depth of the data layer, the position of the view frustum and the impact of stereo vision. Given the recent interest in wearable see-through displays, this study will have a significant impact, both as a solid basis for the assessment of this kind of systems, and for the creation of a set of practical rules to adopt o enable the design of effective see-through interfaces. The research may be carried out in English. The fellowship is intended to provide the successful candidate with the opportunity to pursue his/her own research while benefiting from the range of expertise at Università Ca' Foscari Venezia. Who can apply Prospective candidates are expected to hold a master degree in Computer Science, or related disciplines. Ca' Foscari encourages applications from researchers with positive evaluation in all the criteria in individual proposals such as Marie Skłodowska Curie/ERC Starting Grants/FIRB (Italian Fund for basic research investments)/SIR (Scientific Young Independence Research) or similar. Researchers having successfully completed Marie Skłodowska Curie/ERC Starting Grants/FIRB (Italian Fund for basic research investments)/SIR (Scientific Young Independence Research) or similar funded projects are warmly encouraged to apply. Duration of contract: 12 months (approximately starting: September 1st 2015). Stipend: The research fellowship amounts to 23367,00 Euros per year, including taxes and social charges.
