Napier Celebrates WWII Vets during Art Deco Vintage Car Parade THE MINISTER OF VETERANS AFFAIRS: When addressing the delegates at the 2002 National Conference the Honourable Mark Burton stated quite clearly and I quote “As a point of clarification, full pension coverage means that veterans do not have to prove that a disability is the result of service – only that it may have been”. WHO MAY APPLY FOR A WAR DISABLEMENT PENSION? Every ex- Service Personnel including Merchant Seamen who have served overseas in a War or an Emergency have a right to apply for a Disablement Pension in accordance with the War Pension Act 1954. This includes Service and Home Service Personnel who during the 2nd World War served in New Zealand. Those Personnel who were conscripted into the CMT prior to 31st March 1974 are also included. NAPIER RSA WAR PENSIONS SUPPORT UNIT: MISSION STATEMENT: “We will always strive to provide a professional and caring service to all applicants who qualify for a War Disability Pension or a Surviving Spouses Pension in accordance with the War Pensions Act 1954.” WHAT WE CAN AND WILL DO: We promise to do the following: (i) Be a good listener (ii) Share information (iii) Give advice where necessary (iv) Give support (v) Assist you in making your application (vi) Keep in contact (vii) Ensure your privacy (viii) Pursue your application to a conclusion (ix) Respect your wishes (x) Assist you throughout the entire process Phone; John Purcell QSM J.P. or Tony Fraser for advice and assistance or ring reception (835-7629) for an appointment Presidents Report Adding value to a Club Card is not a new invention, it fact if you rejoined and RSL in Australia in recent times and paid your $5.00 to $10.00 per annum sub, there is a better than even chance you would get between $50 to $75.00 of added value. While I know our annual subscription will never be reduced to such a low level because of capitation levies, I would like to think that the Napier RSA through its proposed ‘Business Relationship’ programme, can add significant value to your membership. Starting off, we have invited (via the back page advertisement & blog) our own members who either own or manage business’s to participate, obviously we would want to see them supported first and foremost, and depending on the uptake we will expand ‘the list’ from there. We hope to achieve (over time) whereby your membership card is a powerful purchasing tool, backed by the potential of over 3000 other members fronting up for goods and services and every one getting savings as a result of their membership. To all members who have and are intending to rejoin the Club this year, thank you very much, your support is most appreciated. I am very proud of our Club, it is often mentioned in the most flattering terms from a broad range of people, both professional and by the hundreds of national and international visitors who visit on an everyday basis. At the risk of repeating myself, I once again say that we are only as good as the support you give us, and that cycle of our business (trade) is only as good as the Staff and Management Team are providing you with – I think they do a marvelous job. April is a significant month for RSA’s both locally and nationally, firstly we commemorate the beginning of the WW1, service personnel who fought, died and returned with a very special ‘Fields of Remembrance’ ceremony at Memorial Square and of course ANZAC Day will follow on the 25th April. Please note that all dates and times are posted in a feature article in this Club Magazine. Independent Task Force (ITF) – Report: The ITF is hearing that many members see a clear need for significant change. Tinkering with the current arrangements will not be enough. But whatever they do must be constructive as they prepare the movement for its second century. The results will affect everyone in some way, not just the NEC and National Office. Much detail is yet to be teased out, but the shape is becoming clearer. There is much more work to be done on the detail. The ITF plan to visit with as many RSAs as possible during April and May for consultations before they reach final conclusions. A programme for this is being developed. Meantime, please do not jump to conclusions before hearing the detail; save your questions for the consultation team when they come. Following the consultation rounds, they will prepare and promulgate their final recommendations in order that you (our members) are fully informed for National Council in October. J Purcell President Thought for the Day The winner is always part of the answer, the loser is always part of the problem The winner says “let me do it for you”, the loser says “That’s not my job”. The winner sees an answer for every problem, the loser sees a problem for every answer. The winner says “It may be difficult but its possible”, the loser says “It may be possible but it’s difficult”. When a winner makes a mistake he says “I was wrong”, when a loser makes a mistake he says “it wasn’t my fault”. Winners make it happen, losers let it happen Don’t be a loser Thank you for your membership renewal By now and with fingers crossed you would have received your invitation to rejoin the Napier RSA. Your invitation would/should have come via email or snail mail, whichever was your preference. I would like to take the opportunity to personally THANK all those Members who renewed their membership, your confidence in the future of the Club is most appreciated. While the Club does not make money from subscriptions it gives the Club the confidence to move forward and plan for future developments and focus on business trends either positively or negatively, depending on the number of renewals or lack thereof. The Executive Committee and the Management Team are continually investing in the Club, be it in goods and services, maintenance or technology, discerning members want more, need more and deserve more, so we are never off the spending carousel. As is typical with Clubs, and many other membership based business for that matter 20% of the members generate 80% of the income, so to continue to grow we have to continually increase membership, increase frequency of visits, reward our regulars and incentivize the remaining 80% with added value. The hospitality industry is tough, new licensing laws regarding drink drive certainly makes you think twice before leaving the comfort of your couch, dress up and go out, especially if the weather is a little on the cold or wet side of the barometer. Currently the RSA Membership stands just under 3600 making it by far the largest Club in the Hawkes Bay. We had our most successful year in history last year and YTD figures are encouraging. Simply put, none of the above can or could be achieved unless; YOU, your family and friends continue to support the Club in the way you have over the past 5 years. For interest sake; 2400 of our members are in the 61 plus age bracket, 41% of our total membership are female and 59% male. Including GST, bar sales are estimated at $1,000,000 pa, Gaming $900,000 pa and the Restaurant is just shy of $2,000,000 pa. Our trading comfort zone (sales) is approximately $70,000 per week and we have 32 full and part time staff. Subs are $35.00 per person p.a. and $55.00 per couple p.a. and we pay RNZRSA and Clubs NZ approximately $55,000 per annum capitation fees. Craig Williams CE – Napier RSA Oh dear, never mind . . . RSA profile; Mr Max Collett Pilot Officer Max Collett’s TB741/Waipawa Special IV after a June 1945 landing incident when the propellor of another aircraft that was overtaking him cut through the fuselage and stopped just behind his seat. “Quite a few stitches in my head – back and front” said Max. Max Collett has been a member of the Napier RSA for over 32 years and has contributed enormously to the well being of the Club with particular reference to the financial administration side of the business. Max is a member of the Normandy Veterans Association and has been awarded a Gold Star, Life Membership and a Merit Badge in appreciation of his efforts over many years – Thank you Max The Napier RSA acknowledge Mr Les Hewett, Editor of the Hasting Branch of the Royal New Zealand Air Force Association for his editorial and photograph There is a blond on the plane A blonde gets an opportunity to fly to a nearby country. She has never been on an airplane anywhere and was very excited and tense. As soon as she boarded the plane, a Boeing747, she started jumping in excitement, running over seat to seat and starts shouting, "BOEING! BOEING!! BOEING!!! BO....." She sort of forgets where she is, even the pilot in the cock-pit hears the noise. Annoyed by the goings on, the Pilot comes out and shouts "Be silent!" There was pin-drop silence everywhere and everybody is looking at the blonde and the angry Pilot. She stared at the pilot in silence for a moment, concentrated really hard, and all of a sudden started shouting, "OEING! OEING! OEING! OE...." A fancy method Some women are gathered and the subject of conversation turns to sex and then birth control. The first woman says, "We're Catholic so we can't have birth control." The next woman says, "I am too, but we use the rhythm method." The third woman says, "We use the bucket and saucer method." "What the heck is the bucket and saucer method?" the others ask. "Well, I'm five foot eleven...and my husband is five foot two. We make love standing up with him standing on a bucket, and when his eyes get big as saucers, I kick the bucket out from under him." The Duck walk NAPIER RSA Poppy Day Collectors Required Thursday 17th April 2014- 9am to 4pm PLEASE add your name and contact number to the various Collectors lists around the Club. Add in your preferred collection point and times With many helpers we would only need to do an hour each Refreshments available for ALL Collectors Thank you from the President and Executive Team A circus owner walked into a bar to see everyone crowded around a table watching a little show. On the table was an upside down pot and a duck tap dancing on it. The circus owner was so impressed that he offered to buy the duck from its owner. After some wheeling and dealing, they settled for $10,000 for the duck and the pot. Three days later the circus owner runs back to the bar in anger, "Your duck is a rip-off! I put him on the pot before a whole audience and he didn't dance a single step!" "So?," asked the duck's former owner, "did you remember to light the candle under the pot?" THURSDAY 17TH APRIL 2014 9am TO 4pm Commemoration Events April 2014 The Executive team and Management are committed to the following three important events during the month of April 2014. Club members are encouraged to participate and attend. 1. Monday 14th April - Napier Civic Field of Remembrance (White Crosses Project) – commemorating the centenary of WW1 – 1914 -1918, when 103,000 New Zealanders served overseas, 41,000 were wounded and sadly 18,500 were killed or subsequently died of their wounds. We have combined with the Napier City Council and the Taradale RSA to establish the Napier Civic “field of white crosses”, signifying and paying tribute to the loss of 207 citizens from the Napier/ Taradale district. The crosses will remain in situ until after the ANZAC Day services There are 20 schools and several youth groups from Napier/Taradale participating with the “laying” of the crosses plus several dignitaries, serving military personnel. This Civic Service is being held at the Cenotaph in Memorial Square, Napier and will commence at 10.15am. 2. Thursday 17th April – Annual Poppy Day Appeal – the Napier City Council has approved our street appeal for this day and we invite and welcome the support of as many members as possible to give just an hour of their day to this worthy cause. After all, the RSA organisation, of which you are a part, was formed by the Returned and Service members of our community way back in 1916 for the welfare and support of the Veterans’. However, with dwindling numbers of WWII, Korea, Malaya/Borneo and Vietnam Veterans’ we have new generations of even more Veterans’ from Iraq, Afghanistan and all the other NATO supported peacekeeping missions since. Many of these younger people and their families are also facing some serious health and other problems since their return home and need our support. Please add your name to a “Poppy Collectors” list around the Club, or leave your name and contact number at Reception, thank you. We also invite you to be generous with your donation which will be deposited into the Napier RSA Poppy Charitable Trust, with grants being considered and made by the Trustees. 3. Friday 25th April – ANZAC Day – services are being held in many places throughout New Zealand and Australia and in many overseas places. We encourage you to attend at least one of the following services, along with your family or friends to pay your respects to the men and women who lost their lives or are still suffering as a result of their service. The world is a much better place because of their sacrifices. a) 6.00am - Dawn Parade – at Cenotaph, Memorial Square Napier b) 9.00am - Eskdale Church, Eskdale. c) 11.00am - Napier Civic Service – at Cenotaph, Memorial Square Napier. We were pleased to present a posy of flowers to our Patroness Betty Donovan who turned 90 a few weeks ago. As our February meeting coincides with Art Deco Celebrations the Ladies were invited to wear Art Deco apparel, and there were many well-presented art deco outfits. As a surprise we had Steve Donovan, Chairman of the Hawkes Bay Vintage Car Club, address the Section. Steve told us the history of vintage cars and also had arranged for three vintage cars to arrive and take the Ladies for a spin around the town. The Ladies enjoyed the surprise. The blonde cop asked to see the blonde driver’s license. She dug through her purse and was getting progressively more agitated. ‘What does it look like?’ she finally asked. The policewoman replied, ‘It’s square and it has your picture on it.’ The driver finally found a square mirror in her purse, looked at it and handed it to the policewoman. ‘Here it is,’ she said. The blonde officer looked at the mirror, then handed it back saying, ‘OK, you can go. I didn’t realize you were a cop.’ Major Sporting events are shown on our Big Screen or are available on request Monday Tuesday Pension Day every 2nd Tuesday All Day Wednesday Friday Sit and Keep Fit, 9.30am National Party 3rd Friday in month from 10am Saturday Sunday Raffles $4.00 Sunday lunch Mega Draw Spoofing Veterans Pension Napier Ladies Probus Every 3rd Tuesday Morning Thursday Grandmothers Raising Grandchildren 10.00am Afternoon Evening Napier Inner Wheel 1st Monday in Month Western Napier 2nd Monday in Month HOUSIE 1.00pm4pm (Conference Room or Al Fresco area) Women’s Section 3rd Monday in Month from 1.30pm Over 60’s Snooker Line Dancing from 7pm Future Gospel Brothers 2nd Monday in the Month Wine Club 1st Monday in the Month Conference Room 6.00pm to 7,00pm Indoor Bowls from 1.30pm Pension Tuesday MEGA DRAW Rock n Roll from 7pm every Tuesday Darts Spirit of Napier Lions 1st and 3rd Tuesday in the Month Napier Host Lions 1st and 3rd Wednesday in Month Trivial Pursuit 7.00 pm to 9.30 pm All Welcome Snooker Dash every Thursday Raffles Line Dancing Beginners welcome Rock N Roll Social Or Line Dancing Kiwian’s 2nd & 4th Wednesday in the month Veterans or Families of Veterans Have you, or has a Family a story to tell? SATURDAY 5TH APRIL 2014 – ADMISSION BY TICKET ONLY MEMBERS $15.00 – NON MEMBERS $20.00 Normandy Veterans Honoured in Art Deco Parade Front page Cover Story Art Deco Vintage Car procession is a great day in the Bay, and we at the RSA had 3 WWII Veterans and two wives assembled to have what they said was a fantastic and unprecedented outing. The men looked resplendent in their blazers, adorned with the medals they so proudly earned. The Official Party consisted of, Stan Douglas and wife Junette, Bill Gallie and wife Anne, John Chandler with his daughter Joy and son in law Trevor They were met by Petty Officer Mark Dunn who was detailed to be their escort and after coffee and a chat they were taken into town and formed an official part the Art Deco parade. They arrived back at the RSA looking very hot, but after a cool drink they all revived and then the stories began. The Navy Band led the parade followed by the Mayors official car, then our veterans, who all enjoyed waving to the crowd. A representative from Radio NZ, most interested in our vets did a personal interview with John and Stan and when I listened to some of the stories they told us, it did not seem like nearly 70 years ago. We owe those men and others like them a great deal, and I would like to thank Lt Commander Neville Smith RNZNR for organizing our vets to attend this event and looking after them. I thoroughly enjoyed being with them and it fulfills our motto of the RSA in terms of ‘People helping People’ Joy Miller Vice President NAPIER RSA SUPPORT TEAM “People helping People” Members wanted for Hospital, Rest Home or home visits.
