2014 Distinguished Alumna Speech
The Distinguished Alumna Award recognizes a graduate who has made a significant contribution
to society by exemplifying LF’s philosophy of Christian education. In the Winter Sequel edition,
you were asked to vote for this year’s honoree. Mrs. Joan Siburkis Schott, ’58 is our
2014 Distinguished Alumna and the following is the speech she delivered to the Class of 2014
at their commencement exercises on June 6 at Holy Family College.
Good afternoon Bishop Thomas, Sister Donna, Sister Kathleen, faculty, parents, friends and most especially, the
Class of 2014.
I must tell you that from the moment
I learned I was nominated for the Distinguished Alumna of the Year, I have been
worrying about my speech in the event I
was selected for this honor. In my mind,
I couldn’t help but think what I could
possibly say to you that you could relate
to considering the years between the day
I graduated from Little Flower and today,
your graduation day. After all, I am old
enough to be your grandmother.
When I think back to my days at Little Flower, I can’t help but think how different life was when I first entered those

welcoming doors. And, it wasn't the
main entrance doors – no, that was reserved for seniors only!
Back then, we did not have cell
phones. Some of us didn't even have a
phone in our homes – we had to use a
pay phone located at the corner store.
And colored TV, well that was still in the
future. We thought we were really special when given a battery operated radio.
Today just about all of you have cell
phones to communicate with your family
and friends. We couldn't text one another
– we actually had to speak to each other.
Although our high school years may
have been vastly different, we share a
common bond that was formed over 50
years ago, when as a member of the
Class of 1958, I graduated from Little
Flower. It is the same bond you share
with the over 35,000 women who have
been fortunate enough to be educated at
a school with a tradition of guiding
young women and helping them achieve
their goals and face the challenges of
their future. And what a wonderful, harmonious connection this is!
I am confident that all of you love
Little Flower as much as I do – how
could you not. After all, for the past four
years, you have been educated by a
group of caring faculty and staff, encouraged to discover your inner gifts and talents, presented with opportunities to
become active members of your commu-

nities and church, made friendships that
will last a lifetime, and given the confidence to move forward knowing that you
can and will make a difference. However, as you embark on this next phase
of your young adult life, I am offering a
challenge that I pray you take seriously.
Stay connected! By this, I don’t mean by
the use of the internet or technology.
STAY CONNECTED TO LITTLE
FLOWER!
For the past four years, Little Flower
has been your home, your family. You
were nourished here and you grew. You
blossomed. You were taught and inspired to trust your dreams and to have
the opportunity to have a full life and to
leave this world a better place. Mother
Teresa wrote: “We have been created for
greater things, not just to be a number in
the world, not just to go out for diplomas
and degrees, this work and that work.
We have been created in order to love
and to be loved.” You have been loved
by your teachers, your classmates, the
staff and administration, your parents.

FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK . . .
Dear Alumnae and Friends:
Blessings!
As you peruse through this edition of The Sequel, you will notice
that the BIG NEWS is that Little
Flower is celebrating its 75th Anniversary Year! To think, I have
been blessed to be at Little Flower
for the 55th, 60th, 65th, 70th, and
now the 75th! I find that each anSister Donna Shallo,
niversary is more special than the
I.H.M., LF President
previous one probably because of
the challenges presented and prayers answered before each
milestone!
At the end of May, our new seniors were inspired to chose
“Girls with dreams become women of vision” as the theme for
the 2014-2015 school year. The longer I am privileged to minister at Little Flower, the more I appreciate our history with
Cardinal Dougherty’s vision of providing a Catholic education
for young girls who would be influenced by the spirituality of
St. Therese. We are forever indebted to the legacy of the wise
Religious women of our beginning days who dared to dream
the design of our beautiful school seal, linking us with St.
Therese’s Carmelite community, the distinctive school ring,
and the rousing melody of our Alma Mater with its inspirational message.
Isn’t it awesome to think of the 35,000+ women whom Little Flower enabled to entertain dreams as a young girl? You
found your place in your little corner of the world and lived
the vision you dared to dream in the myriad paths you walk in
life – some in big ways but most in the “little way of St.
Therese,” day in and day out, effecting change because of your
vision and values being shared with your families and co-workers. The excellent foundation Little Flower gave you continues
to impact the lives of all you touch…
In closing, I would like to share a prayer that Father McCaffrey prayed on May 21, the 75th Anniversary of the laying
of our cornerstone, based on St. Paul’s first letter to the
Corinthians 3:9-11…”
“Almighty God, Your servant, Paul, reminds us that we are
a field that is continually under Your cultivation, a building that
is always strengthened and renewed. Grant that we and future
generations of students, faculty, administrators, and advisors
may always respect and appreciate our traditions and the great
people of faith who have built this community upon Your firm
foundation. Bless our community, may our recruitment and retention efforts be most successful and may all young women
who enter these doors achieve the beautiful blossoming that a
Catholic education affords them. Through the intercession of
St. Therese give success to our mission and allow us to be nourished by the good Theresian spirit of this home that has perfumed our community with a gentle shower of roses for seven
plus decades.”
Before I close, I do want to acknowledge your overwhelmingly generous response to the May Label Mailing requesting
donations to replace the 33 year-old light board. We received
three times the needed amount, so the remainder was used for
my favorite cause, the Scholarship Fund. Thank you! Thank
you!
I look forward to celebrating our proud tradition with you
at the various special 75th Anniversary events which culminate
at the Open House back here at dear Little Flower on April 26,
2015…God bless you! Have a wonderful summer!
Fondly,
Sister Donna Shallo, IHM
President
CHARITABLE CONTRIBUTIONS

Over a year ago, Little Flower began using
Constant Contact as a tool for communicating
with our alumnae, parents and friends.
It’s the way to know what’s happening at
Little Flower between Sequels!
All we need from you is a current email address.
Hope to hear from you, soon!
ADVANCEMENT NOTES . . .
Dear Alumnae and Friends:
Wow! We just closed another
great school year, here at Little
Flower! During the Senior Awards
Assembly on June 2nd, our 154 seniors were inducted into the Little
Flower Alumnae Association, joining the illustrious group known as
Little Flower Alumnae.
The Class of 2014 was very enSister
Joan M. Ames, IHM thusiastic when offered the opportuDirector of Advancement
nity to support Little Flower during
their college years through the Senior Pledge Program. At
the Senior Pledge Assembly on May 5th the Class of ’14
pledged $20.14, for the next four years.
A huge “thank you” to all, who so willingly support Little
Flower. We know it is not always easy, and yet you continue
to remember Little Flower in your charitable giving. We are
deeply touched! So, so many Little Flower students are benefitting from your tremendous generosity. Thank you to our
many first-time donors; to those who have increased their gift;
to the many who designated Memorial Donations to Little
Flower; and to those who doubled their gift through Matching
Funds or second gifts (some very clever combinations of 7 and
5 in those gifts).
Once again, our Annual Phon-a-thon was a great success.
Thanks to our LF alumnae and LF parents who graciously volunteered time to make telephone calls, we received over
$100,000. A very special “thank you” to Jane Berry Ledger
’75, who literally spent days on the phone.
The 2013-2014 Regional Reunions concluded on April 5th
in San Juan Capistrano. Sister Donna, or Sister Donna and I
were able to attend reunions in Arizona, California, Delaware,
Florida, Bucks County, PA and Montgomery County, PA this
past year. We always look forward to seeing our alums faceto-face! Don’t forget – if you have a suggestion for a location,
let us know!
Most Class Reunions are organized. Please see the Reunion Board in this issue of the Sequel for details. Check our
Little Flower website – www.littleflowerhighschool.org for
updates. If you’d like to plan your Class Reunion, just contact
me at [email protected] or (215-455-6900
ext. 118).
We have a number of 75th Anniversary events planned for
the 2014-15 School Year, so stay tuned.
Thank you to all the Alumnae Association Officers of both
the Main Chapter and the Cape May County Chapter for all
they do for Little Flower. You are truly a blessing.
Enjoy your summer! Stay healthy! Hope to see you at one
or all of the 75th Anniversary events.
Gratefully,
Sister Joan M. Ames, IHM
Director of Advancement
Alumna Speech continued from p. 1
You have, I would assume, loved your years at Little Flower.
Now it is time for you to show your love for your Alma Mater
and to put that love into action.
As you step forward into the next phase of your life I implore you, please do not forget Little Flower. You wouldn't
think of abandoning your parents, your sisters or brothers as
they are your family. Little Flower is also your family. You
can stay connected by way of the Alumnae Association who
welcomes you and needs you if we are to continue to be a
successful organization. You are needed to step up and ask,
"What can I now do for Little Flower?" Please get involved!
Chair a reunion, serve on a committee, attend an alumnae
meeting. Do not allow your relationship with Little Flower
to end today. Relationships need to be cultivated in order to
grow. Please continue to grow your relationship with Little
Flower by getting involved and becoming active members
and participants of your Alumnae Association.
As I stand before you today, I offer my heartfelt congratulations not just to you who are receiving your Little Flower
diplomas, but also to your parents and guardians. And I offer
my deepest respect and gratitude to your parents and
guardians who made many sacrifices to ensure you received
your Catholic high school education. I also congratulate your
teachers who encouraged all of you to live your life with integrity. To all I say, well done!
My final wish for each of you is best expressed by once
again quoting the words of Mother Teresa, for she lived a life
of humbleness and love and showed her love by her actions
on a daily basis.
“May today there be peace within. May you trust that you
are exactly where you are meant to be. May you not forget
the infinite possibilities that are born of faith in yourself and
others. May you use the gifts you have received, and pass on
the love that has been given to you. May you be content with
yourself just the way you are. Let this knowledge settle into
your bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance,
praise and love. It is there for each and every one of us.”
And may Little Flower always remain in your hearts and
minds.
Thank you!

OFFICE OF PLANNED GIVING PERPETUATING LITTLE FLOWER LEGACY
Dear Alumnae and Friends:
On May 21, we gratefully welcomed this year’s newest
members into our cherished Legacy Society during our Annual
Legacy Society Mass and Luncheon. How touching to witness
so many new members formalizing their desire to make a lasting difference to Little Flower Catholic High School for Girls.
We thank them for their care and concern for our current and
future students.
Our 2013-2014 new Legacy Members are:
Christina A Baessler ’65,
Kathleen O'Neill Berdel ’64,
Kathleen McGowan Clotfelter ’55,
Margaret Cronin Daily ’61,
Valorie Valotta Daskilewicz ’69,
Anne Bonhage Donnelly ’51,
Margaret Donnelly ’59,
Patricia Kelley Donohie ’48,
Barbara Donovan ’57,
Anne Gavaghan ’51,
Kathleen Smith Hagarty ’64,
Maryanne Farmer Hennessy ’57,
Joan Keller ’56,
Michael Mariakis,
Carol Murphy McGeehan ’54,
Blanche Haviland Moore ’46,
Mary McCracken Pinder ’44,
Margaret Reher ’48,
We are grateful to Valorie Valotta Daskilewicz, ’69, one of
our newest Legacy Society members, for sharing her thoughts
on why she has remembered Little Flower in her will. Please
take the time to read her reflection…
Please let us know if you have remembered Little Flower
in your Estate Plan because I want to thank you NOW. I have
told you before that it always saddens me when I am informed
by an attorney after the death of an Alumna that she has remembered us… Thank you and God bless you!

Why I Became a Legacy Society Member
Valorie Valotta Daskilewicz ’69
There’s no place like home! Who
can forget Dorothy’s magical words that
transported her back to Kansas where
she belonged? Looking over the rainbow for something bright and glamorous was fruitless, but she had to learn
it for herself.
Dorothy’s story could have been
mine when I began my freshman year in
September, 1965. To say I was overwhelmed is putting it mildly. For a
short time, we were three to a locker,
Valorie Valotta
and shared homeroom space in the SenDaskilewicz ’69
ior Caf with two other homerooms, no
walls, and no backs to the stools we sat upon. Traveling by
“PTC”, through silent corridors, or up the down staircase, I was
fearful of doing the wrong thing; sure that I would be in the
wrong place at the wrong time. The Sisters of St. Joseph had
to use whistles to control the traffic of 3,000 girls. Discipline
was very strict! None of the familiar faces from my grade
school were in any of my classes. On top of the freshman frantic, my parents separated and ultimately divorced that year.
I longed to be someplace else, anyplace else, even over the
rainbow.
Because of the separation, we moved in with my grandparents at their new home in Parkwood Manor and out of LF’s
feeder area. In my mother’s vulnerability, she agreed to my
plea to let me try public high school. Like the Scarecrow, I must
not have had a brain. Why did I think I would be less overwhelmed and isolated at a new school in an unfamiliar system?
I blame it on my youth. Public School was as foreign to me as
Oz was to Dorothy. It took less than a week when I realized I
Page 4 / Summer 2014
was out of my element. One week was enough for me.
To my good fortune, friends in Port Richmond invited us to
stay with them. From that base, I could return “home” to Little
Flower. My trip over the rainbow cured my freshman blues. I
think I kissed the ground at 10th and Luzerne. (We were only
allowed to use the back entrance, remember.)
From the vantage point of today, I can see the people who
nurtured me at Little Flower and who helped set me on the path
the Lord had waiting for me, a path showered with roses from
our patroness. I remember Sister Dolores who had encouraging
words for me upon my return, Sister Celestine and Sister Marie
Elaine, who imparted good career advice, Sister Miriam, who
in my hour of need, borrowed money from the “Pub” picnic
fund and lent it to me so I could get my graduation picture, Sisters Albert Marguerite and Michael Xavier who helped me enter
the Archdiocesan Teacher’s Program, and my beloved Miss
Winkler, who helped me find my voice, courage, and heart in
Speech class and Drama Club.
Today, they have been replaced by an equally caring faculty
and staff led by Sister Donna and Sister Kathleen. I know this
because the current faculty has touched the life of my true
legacy, my daughter Amy, Class of 2011.
I wanted to become part of the Legacy Society because first
of all, it’s painless, and most of all because I believe in Catholic
education. I have been involved with it my whole life; first as
a student, then as a lay teacher, DRE, and parent. I want a
Catholic education to remain viable in the city of Philadelphia.
It can only happen with our financial help and prayers. I want
youngsters in the future, who need a home away from home, as
I did, to look at their school on Luzerne Street and be able to
say, “There’s no place like home, there’s no place like Little
Flower.”
Little Flower Legacy Society
The Little Flower Legacy Society membership includes our cherished alumnae and friends who,
as loyal visionaries and generous benefactors, have included Little Flower in their Will or estate
plan. Through their Planned Gift, they have committed to securing the mission and the legacy of
Little Flower into the future.

ALUMNAE ASSOCIATION NEWS . . .
Greetings and Happy New Year!
Happy END OF WINTER!
If you are like me, you were delighted to see the end of the snow, ice
and cold. This year has been one endless and relentless winter.
Where does time go? This year our
beloved school will celebrate the 75th
Anniversary with various events –
kickoff to be held at Currans in Tacony
Dolly Ellis Brophy on September 26th. On October 4th
’59
there will be a Special Mass and Gala
~ Mass to be celebrated at St. Anslem’s Church with a Gala to
follow at the Emerald Room. Details can be found in this edition of the Sequel. We are hoping you can attend one or all of
the events.
My class, the class of ’59, will celebrate a special anniversary ~ 55 years since we graduated. It doesn’t seem possible
that we walked the halls of LF all those years ago. I look forward to seeing many of my classmates.
The Alumnae Board of the Main Chapter would like to
congratulate our Vice President, Joan Siburkis Schott ’58 on
her election as Distinguished Alumna of the Year. Joan has
been involved with LF, her class reunions and the board for
many years and truly deserves this award. I am honored to
call her my friend.
Summer Fest, once again, will be held at Westy’s Irish Pub
on August 16th. There is a change in time this year so that
we may have the entire deck for our group. AnnMarie Brown
Hill will be hosting this event (and she always does a great
job). Hope to see a great number of you there.
Several events are planned by the Alumnae Association –
our first meeting will begin with a Mass in the LF Chapel at
6:00 pm on October 14, 2014.
A trip is planned to Salem, MA for October 22-24, 2014,
chaired by AnnMarie Brown Hill. Details of the trip are in this
Sequel.
Have you returned to school since your graduation? The
Annual Alumnae Mass and Communion Luncheon will be
held at school on November 6, 2014. Why not get a group together and come celebrate our heritage ~ 75 years of producing
dynamic women ready to face the world. Joan Siburkis Schott,
Jaime Davis and I will be chairing this celebration and hope
to see all of you in attendance. See the flyer in this Sequel.
Our Annual Christmas Luncheon will be held at the Cottage
Green for the first time, on December 13, 2014. This event is
always well-attended. (We hope the weather cooperates this
year). Joan Schott does a wonderful job with this one.
We hope to organize more social gatherings for our young
alumnae to give you an opportunity to support our Alumnae Association through Fun – Fund Raisers. If you have any suggestions for such events/social gatherings please notify Sr. Joan
Ames and she will pass your ideas on to the Board.
There were no suggestions for school memories this month.
So my question to all of you: Did you attend an annex during
your Freshmen Year? Was it St. Benedict’s or St. Vincent’s?
Did you have a Sister Theodore who taught Religion? Your answers will be printed in the Winter Sequel.
Please check the Sequel and the website: www.littleflowerhighschool.org for information on all our events.
May God bless all of you and may our Patroness, St.
Therese shower her roses on each of you. To quote our Patroness: “Let us go forward in peace, our eyes on heaven, the
only one goal of our labors.”
Hope you all have a most pleasant summer.

Father Joseph McCaffrey, School Minister, shared an overview of
the Liturgical, Spiritual and Service activities for the year
Liturgical:
Mass is offered each weekday morning in the Chapel.
Masses are celebrated each month in recognition of our Alumnae and in thanksgiving for the generosity of our benefactors.
Additionally a mass for recently deceased Alumnae was celebrated in Chapel in November and a Mass for the members of
the Little Flower Legacy Society was celebrated in May.
Community Masses are celebrated throughout the year such
as on October 1 for the Feast Day of our Patroness, St. Therese;
the Officers and Representatives for the Community Service

were celebrated communally such as the Opening of the School
Year in September, Thanksgiving, Lent and the Ascension Holy
Day.
This year a Vigil Mass was celebrated in the Chapel on September 30 for the Alumnae in celebration of our Patroness and
our spiritual relationship we have with St. Therese.
The Class of 2014 celebrated the reception of their class
rings with a Mass at St. Matthew Parish in October. Their Baccalaureate Liturgy was celebrated at the Cathedral Basilica of
Sts. Peter and Paul on Thursday, June 5.
Other Liturgical Celebrations are conducted seasonally such
as: the Blessing of the Creche during Advent, the Blessing of
the New Calendar Year in January (dedicating the year 2014 to
the 14 Works of Mercy), the Stations of the Cross in April and
the Crowning of the Blessed Mother in May.
Students participate at lunchtime liturgical services at the
beginning of each lunch period.
The Sacrament of Reconciliation is celebrated each day as
well as communally during special liturgical seasons.

Thank you for your continued prayerful support of our mission and ministry. Peace and blessings in abundance.
Though you will never hear this from
Sister Donna Shallo herself, Sister Donna
was the recipient of a prestigious award
this past May 21. At the Presidential
Awards hosted by Holy Family University
and the Honorable Charles F. Dougherty,
Sister Donna was surprised with the In
Remembrance Award, which says “Thank you” to the
women Religious who have given their lives to the service
of our Church, our Faith and our Catholic People.
Sister Donna was recognized for her years of service
in many Catholic schools and most notably for her leadership role as President of Little Flower Catholic High
School for Girls for the past fourteen years.
The Little Flower community is grateful for the dedication of Sister Donna and is happy that so many notable
Philadelphia leaders recognized her leadership and service,
delivered in her own inimitable smiling and faith-filled
style to the LF school community.

on Saturday, April 26. About 150 young women from grades 7
through 12 eagerly awaited the chance to work side-by-side with
published and successful authors.
The event was not created
over night. It took several
years to plan and create, and
finally came about through
the unique and amazing
friendship of theology

on one” session about writing with and best-selling author K.M.
this interested student.
Walton. These two brilliant
women worked together, and with others, plotted an intricate
and enthralling event that pulled in many girls.
Sister Kim and Ms. Walton spent hours contacting, and
reaching out to authors and illustrators. It was not hard for them
to get authors to agree to attend. All the women had to do was
tell about Little Flower’s avid readers, who spend most of their
time with a book in hand. Word of this event spread as far as
Children’s Book World, who offered to sell books at the
festival.
The day consisted of workshops that allowed the authors to
connect with the young women, sharing tips and experiences on
writing essays and forming well-told stories. The authors created stimulating workshops involving the girls in writing their
own stories based on prompts or pictures, creating characters
and problems and even giving the girls tips on writing
the perfect college essay.
While the majority of the
young women said they truly
enjoyed reading, they openly
admitted to not quite enjoying writing until coming to
this festival. “I always hate
writing and never wanted to Author Amy Garvey interacts with

ways to go about it,” said a student in attendance. This was the
goal of the entire writer’s festival.
Walton emphasized the need to write; not only to write a
book but also to
make it through life.
“Write your ideas
down, whether for an
essay or ideas about
your life, write them
down,” said Walton.
“Writing them down

help lead you down a
great path. All you have to do is write it down.”
Few imagined something like this festival happening in an
inner-city high school in Philadelphia but the obvious passion
Little Flower has for reading will let nothing get in the way of
students creating their own story. They will always “write on.”

Hail, to you! Little Flower, Hail!
On September 1, Little Flower Catholic High School for Girls will
begin its 75th Anniversary Year!
We could not have reached this DIAMOND
Milestone Anniversary without the powerful intercession of our patroness, St. Therese, and the
loyal support of our Alumnae and friends, most
especially since 1992. Your gifts in ALL denominations over these past 22 years have been sustaining this wonderful beacon of hope year after
year.
Thank you for keeping Cardinal
Dougherty’s vision of an “All Girls’ Catholic High School in North
Philadelphia” alive and thriving!
We hope that those who have not yet begun to support Little Flower,
will be inspired to make their 75th Anniversary donation NOW to join
the others and be part of this special moment in Little Flower’s history…
Thank you and God bless you!
