School Awards - South Gloucestershire Council

Time4Reading
School Awards
PRIMARY
Foreward
We are delighted to introduce the Time 4 Reading School Awards as part of our South
Gloucestershire Year of Reading campaign.
We know that reading is good for us and there have been a number of recent national reports
which confirm the importance and value of reading. Being able to read underpins education and
accelerates our chances of success; however, reading is also especially important because it can
contribute so much more to our lives – reading provides pleasure, enjoyment and inspiration as
well as helping us to understand the world and experience worlds other than our own.
The Time 4 Reading campaign is to encourage people of all ages in South Gloucestershire to
make time for reading. As part of this campaign, your school is invited to participate in the Time
4 Reading school awards. The Time 4 Reading awards are available to all primary and secondary
schools in South Gloucestershire.
This booklet explains how schools can get involved in the awards and promote the pleasure and
enjoyment of reading as well as all the other benefits which reading can bring.
We look forward to following the success of the Time 4 Reading school awards.

Summer Reading Challenge
Last year, 7390 children in South Gloucestershire participated in the Summer Reading Challenge.
Organised by The Reading Agency since 1999 (www.readingagency.org.uk), the Summer Reading
Challenge combines FREE access to books with fun, creative activities in the library during the
summer holidays.
How the Challenge works
—Children sign up at their local South Gloucestershire library and receive a Record Breakers
poster.
—Children read six books of their choice collecting stickers and incentives along the way.
—Library staff and teenage volunteers are on hand to advise and run family-friendly activities.
—Children who complete the Summer Reading Challenge are presented with a medal and
certificate.
How do schools benefit?
—The Summer Reading Challenge is intrinsically inclusive and can contribute to the achievement
of ALL your pupils including those with special educational needs, disadvantaged pupils and
the most able.
—It enhances and supports your school’s reading policy and your mission for all children to read
more widely and for pleasure.
—It encourages parental engagement and family involvement in reading and helps your school
make links with the library and the wider community.
—It can be the start of a child’s reading journey and prevent the tendency for children’s reading
to dip over the holidays.
—It takes place at your local library and is a brilliant opportunity for extra-curricular activity.
And now, all year round, the Summer Reading Challenge website
www.summerreadingchallenge.org.uk helps children keep track of their reading, find new books to
read, take part in competitions and play games.

Chatterbooks
Chatterbooks reading club is the UK’s largest network of children’s reading groups. 10,000 children
belong to Chatterbooks groups, which are run in libraries and schools to encourage reading
enjoyment.
Chatterbooks groups meet regularly at libraries throughout South Gloucestershire. At each session
children talk about what they are reading, take part in fun activities inspired by the best children’s
books, and choose new books to take home and read.
For more information about library services for children and their families contact your local
library or visit www.southglos.gov.uk/libraries
