Directions: Download and print the photos of important places in Philadelphia and Camden that you can visit. Spend some time looking at the pictures and reading about the places. Match the names of the places with their important dates on the timeline. Include the four bridges seen below on the timeline as well. Commodore John Barry is known as the "Father of the American Navy." He was a Navy commander during the Revolutionary War. Benjamin Franklin lived in Philadelphia and was an important inventor, printer, patriot and one of America's founding fathers. “Ben's bridge” turned 80 years old in 2006. Betsy Ross sewed the first American Flag in Philadelphia. The house where some think she worked is open for visitors. It was the first major bridge named after a woman. Walt Whitman was a famous American poet. He lived in Camden, New Jersey. One of Whitman's most famous poems is "I Hear America Singing." Philadelphia Museum of Art: Completed in 1926. Designed to look like ancient Greek architecture, it includes many types of art, including works by Picasso and Van Gogh. Independence Hall: Completed in 1753. The Declaration of Independence was adopted and the Constitution of the United States was written, debated, and signed here. Philadelphia City Hall: Completed in 1901. It was once the tallest building in Philadelphia. There is a 37 foot bronze statue of William Penn on the top of the building. It is the center of Philadelphia's government. Pennsylvania Hospital: Completed in 1751. America's first hospital was built by Dr. Thomas Bond and Benjamin Franklin. Liberty Bell: An important event was the ringing of the Liberty Bell on July 8, 1776. It rang to call all citizens to gather together and hear the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence. The next year, the Liberty Bell was moved and hidden in Allentown, PA to keep it safe when the British captured Philadelphia. It came home again a year later after the British left the city. Adventure Aquarium: (Originally known as the New Jersey State Aquarium) Completed in 1995. The aquarium is home to all types of amazing creatures such as penguins, hippos, and sharks! Battleship New Jersey: Docked along the Delaware River in Camden in 2000. The "Big J" is the most decorated United States battleship. It first served in World War II, and served up to the Gulf War. Campbell’s Field: Completed in 2001. This ball park is the home of the Camden Riversharks. It is named after the famous Campbell’s Soup Company who has its headquarters in Camden, NJ. National Constitution Center: Completed in 2003. The Constitution Center was built to honor and celebrate the Constitution of the United States and democracy.
