Do you just start moving as soon as you hear a catchy
melody, just a great beat, or a song? If you do, You are
in Love ... Love with Dancing. Its a universal, primal,
surge of energy, that connects us culturally and socially,
to enjoy each other’s company, transcending all borders
and nationalities. As necessary as breathing, sleeping,
and eating, is to be expressive and emotive. Secondary
benefits include exercise, that keeps fit our mind and
body, that is important for people of any age. It lowers
stress, by letting us escape and forgetting all worries
while we dance. It improves relationships and boost
happiness.* Movement and music is pleasing to both the
ear and brain, constituting a pleasurable double play for
your sensory and motor circuits. Some fighting styles
like the Brazilian Capoeira, are choreographed and
practiced along with music, making it almost a folk art.
When you plateau, you can go to the next level by
challenging or improving yourself. Dance can be easy, or
as hard as you want it to be. Dance can be romantic, but
more often dancing is just about taking joy in life. It
really depends on the song, the routine and the person
you are dancing with. Moving rhythmically together
to the beautiful music is hard to resist. Tango can be
smarter, deeper, subtle, sensual or more dramatically
explosive. Some argue Rumba and others Bachata is
the super sensual king of romantic dance, but Waltz
also can be a very sweeping and touching experience,
with the right style of terrific music. Waltz, Foxtrot,
Rumba, and Swing are considered romantic by many
and there are fusions of styles like Bachatango. Dance
can be meditation in motion. Ballroom dancing, is like
a relationship, where success happens, when everyone
gives consideration to each other and to all those on the
floor. Sharing is caring. There is a sense of finding
community and friendship, with the love to dance and
treating it as an art. There is also the opportunity to
travel and dressing up in a great party atmosphere, full
of energy and fun. Love can be as familiar as enjoying
an outing with old friends. Mr. DJ please play some great
music, to help celebrate St. Valentine’s Day through the
passion, romance, and beauty of dancing at the 30-Up.

Note: *University of Derby and the University of England did a study where depressed
patients were prescribed dancing instead of medication and resulted in the findings of
significant increases in happiness, confidence and social skills with decreases in the stress
hormones and the expansion in mindfulness and increase in self-awareness in society.

The nicest place to be, is in someone’s thoughts and
along with dance you can also say it with flowers. The
history of loved ones receiving Valentine’s Day flowers
comes from the custom of sending a floral bouquet to
pass on non-verbal messages, introduced in the 18th
century by Charles II of Sweden, after returning from a
visit to Persia, with a new art: the language of flowers.
This became a fad in Europe, with lists and lexicons of
the “language” published in book form. Each flower had
a specific meaning, making it very possible to have an
entire conversation using only flowers. The red rose is
supposed to be the favorite flower of Venus, the
Goddess of Love. As a result, lovers gave roses and
other flowers to those they cared about, to show their
love which often knew no bounds. They also included
other gifts such as chocolates, after Spanish explorers
brought chocolate back to the Old World in the 17th
century, possibly for its rumoured aphrodisiac effects
and it was sweetened and formed into bars or drops. It
became popular among the rich and later became the
candy of choice for everyone on the lover’s holiday.
Today, people continue to send flowers on special
occasions or to express love and admiration and also
sometimes with chocolates included.
Note: The word aphrodisiacs came from the name of the goddess of love Aphrodite.

Happy
Valentine’s
Day
February 10th & 11th 2017
valentine’s
day DANCE
New Year’s Eve
By all accounts, our New Year’s dance was a great
success, and I would like to thank all those involved
for making it so enjoyable. Eva would be embarrassed if
I had mentioned her leading the Conga line dance at
midnight, and so I shall refrain from doing so. A lot of
work by many people was required to set up and also
decorate the hall, and you can rest assured that we are
really working hard on ideas to get the Cleanup Crew
home earlier. Meanwhile, what a party!
Robbie Burns Night
Adventurous eaters will be interested to hear that each
Robbie Burns Night dance we (well, some of us), have
consumed the full 10 pounds of Haggis that was cooked
that day in addition to the (relatively Scottish) Shepherd’s
Pie. We thank Lairds McWang and MacHall for all of
their Scottish theme music that weekend and also thanks
to Peter and Yorkie and also Haida and Vincy for leading
us in the sequence dances of the Gay Gordons and the
St Bernard’s Waltz.
Seasonal Dances
We constantly strive to evaluate our activities to see
where we can improve, and if anyone has any thoughts
about our seasonal (Christmas, and New Year’s Eve)
dance parties, or about anything else at the Club that
would enhance our dances, we would very much like
to hear from them. In particular, we would like to ask
people to provide their name, so we can get back to them
with follow-up questions. It also helps to know if the
same thought is coming from ten different people, or
one person ten times (although, it could be a useful
thought, either way) that might make the club better.
Valentine’s Day Dance
Feb. 10th & 11th
Rekindle your romance. Hear fabulous romantic music
you don’t really need to understand the words to, and
is so scintillating and so very touching, it would be very
gorgeous music to dance to. Merci to very sweet songs,
that bring back fond memories and nice recollections.
You can have a big dose of fun dancing to some very
awesome Ballroom and Latin tunes with “love” or “kiss”
in the title. Wear something red and strut your sassy
stuff to some of the sexiest songs, that will make sure
you can let loose and have a Fantastic Dance Party at
the 30-Up, Toronto’s most romantic dance club.
Strictly Ballroom At The Princess of Wales Theatre
At time of going to print, we had 10 seats left for our
group outing to see this Musical Version of the very
successful and funny Australian movie about dancing
and (horrors!) Infighting at a dance club. There is a
sign up sheet in the corner by the office, or you can also
e-mail [email protected]. We are inviting everyone
to come, Member or not … and we can buy an extra
block of very good tickets at a 20% discount for the
evening of Thursday, June 1st for 30-Up members and
friends of the Club. The tickets cost $93.75, and you can
also book by talking to the Host or Hostess at the front
desk, or to Justin, and please pay within two weeks of the
booking of your tickets.
Lease time again…
The last 5 years has passed rather fast. Our lease will
expire this summer, and I am initiating the discussions
with the Landlord. I’ll keep the Membership posted…
…Which makes me think of…
While the subject of our leaky roof can always be an
opportunity for cheerful discussion when reviewing
the lease (and on many other occasions), the other
threat to our dance floor is people walking over it in
snowy boots and dropping de-icer and other mess on
the floor. We try to be pleasant to people as we ask
them to please CHANGE THEIR FOOTWEAR at the
front of the Club.
Tea Dance
Under Joanne’s care, the Tea Dance is continuing to
thrive, and the average attendance numbers are now
increasing. However, there is still plenty of room on
the dance floor, so we remind people to give Tuesday
afternoon a try for some very comfortable dancing,
(from 12.00 pm until 3.30 pm). We charge only $10 to
members and $12 for everyone else, and serve a light
snack. We have a fine mixture of DJs: who can play
many different styles and varieties of Latin, ballroom
standards and alternative kinds of light dance music for
your varied dancing pleasure.

St. Patrick’s Day
Theme Dance
March 17th and 18th
A Dance club that can reach Diamond status is something
special, magnificent and needs to be celebrated. Beautiful
intoxicating music how sweet it can be if you make me
dance? Love to dance .. its beautiful to dance on a live
spring maple floor with great company. Show me a new
world of passion without conditions or reason other than
through movement and rhythm to the music. Dress for
class and style, with fantastic music to sparkle and shine.
At the Oscars, Hollywood, Cruise dance floors, society
weddings and our annual 30-Up Black and White Ball is
where Dressing up is part of the fun, dancing to the sheer
joy of an excellent mix of music for dancing with the latest
songs and perennial favourites.
