What is Heath Nash?
I am a man called Heath Nash.
But, Heath Nash is also a design
and production studio in Cape
Town, a group of dedicated and
skilled craftspeople who make
beautiful, valuable objects... from
other people’s rubbish©.
The main concern of the design and manufacturing space that I oversee is reuse; we explore materials that are perhaps otherwise taken for granted and
largely ignored or unseen by others. We find beauty in unexpected places, whilst
creating opportunities for many people to thrive. My way of being and working
is one of play, experimentation, and exploration: I like to engage with creativity
through experience, and to engage reality through creativity.
What we do:
We offer totally original, innovative and functional objects that bring feelings of
warmth and realness into any space in which they are used. All products we
make are 100% handmade, environmentally aware and conscientious, and they
proudly speak about the realities of contemporary South Africa on many levels.
Bespoke objects are another service we offer – to create really exceptional
pieces of décor and lighting for any given space or specification.
Our process:
Many used plastic bottles are collected from various recycling and waste collection
areas around Cape Town (including a number of schools we’ve formed alliances
with). The bottles are washed & cleaned thoroughly (using eco-friendly cleaner and
degreaser). Parallel to this process, our wire components are hand-formed. These
wire units will form the basis of the structures for the repurposed plastic to be
attached to later.
Once the bottles are flattened (by cutting their tops and bottoms off), various flower
shapes (and abstract forms) are hand-cut from the plastic sheets. These shapes are
then creased into semi-rigid forms by hand, and attached one at a time to the wire
components mentioned above.
Finally, the wires with flowers/shapes attached, are built into the products you will
see on the following pages.
As you can imagine, this process is extremely time-consuming (and much more
difficult than to simply make products using virgin material). While all this addedvalue handwork and labour makes our products more costly to produce, we remain
passionate and committed to recycling other people’s rubbish© into beautiful things,
and seek out clients who share our philosophy.

by hand, they have been standardised to an
extent in order to make them more
accessible to everybody.
