You might not know the name Carter Stefan
yet, but you will soon as the Tsawwassen
teen is starting to make his mark in the
music world.
At just 13, Stefan is already
accomplished classical/jazz guitarist.
an
Last year he wrote 12 original compositions,
recorded each song, performed all the
accompanying music and then released the
allinstrumental album Carter Stefan Twelve by Twelve two months before his
13th birthday.
Stefan first picked up the guitar when he
was 10 and was instantly hooked.
"It started with some pretty easy stuff and
then I was put in front of an audience and I
made like $200," he recalled. "I thought,
'Wow,' this is pretty awesome. From there I
just loved performing and sharing my music
with other people."
Stefan's music encompasses many styles,
including country, reggae, classical and
some Delta Blues. Besides the guitar, Stefan
played the ukulele, piano, trumpet,
percussion, bass, and various other sound
effects for the album.
His label Kave Sound Studios recently
submitted the album to the Junos for
consideration for Best Album of the Year.
"I'm really stoked - I hope it gets
nominated," Stefan said.
He said he really doesn't know where his
music comes from.
"I just sit down with the guitar and I just
play. It just comes out of my mind and my
instrument. I don't know how it happens, it
just comes out," he said.
Stefan has already built up quite a
community following with numerous private
performances, the Special Olympics Delta
gala dinner, the South Delta Jazz Festival,
the Grand Prix of Art and a performance at
Gallery 1710 in Tsawwassen.
But one gig he is most proud of is his
weekly Monday performance at Augustine
House where he plays from 4 to 6 p.m. for
the residents.
"In Grade 6 we had to do a volunteer
project, so I went to Augustine House and
performed and it was a lot of fun," he said.
"I really like playing in front of these
people. They are nice. The staff here are
great too. I just love volunteering."
And the residents get just as much out of the
experience as Stefan does, according to
recreation manager Tim Bowman.
"It's right before dinner and it can be a very
calming experience for the residents," said
Bowman. "The first time he came here last
year he just blew us away. I asked him back
right away and it has turned into a regular
Monday gig. He is a super nice kid too. It's
nice to see a young man being such a
devoted volunteer."
Balancing his music, school and finding
time to hang out with friends is a constant
challenge, but one Stefan relishes.
"I really love what I'm doing and I want to
be the best guitarist in the world. To do that
I know that I might have to make a few
sacrifices, but that's OK," he said. "I just
love playing music. I can't see myself doing
anything else."

Why Wear a Poppy
"Please wear a poppy," the lady
said, and held one forth, but I
shook my head. Then I stopped
and watched as she offered them
there, and her face was old and
lined with care;
But beneath the scars the years
had made there remained a smile
that refused to fade.
A boy came whistling down the
street, bouncing along on carefree feet.
His smile was full of joy and fun,
"Lady," said he, "may I have one?"
When she'd pinned it on, he
turned to say; "Why do we wear a
poppy today?"
The lady smiled in her wistful way
And answered; "This is
Remembrance Day. And the
poppy there is a symbol for the
gallant men who died in war.
And because they did, you and I
are free - that's why we wear a
poppy, you see. I had a boy about
your size, with golden hair and big
blue eyes.
He loved to play and jump and
shout, Free as a bird, he would
race about. As the years went by,
he learned and grew, and became
a man - as you will, too.
He was fine and strong, with a
boyish smile, but he'd seemed
with us such a little while when
war broke out and he went away. I
still remember his face that day.
When he smiled at me and said,
'Goodbye, I'll be back soon, Mum,
please don't cry.' But the war went
on and he had to stay, and all I
could do was wait and pray.
His letters told of the awful fight
(I can see it still in my dreams at
night), with the tanks and guns
and cruel barbed wire, and the
mines and bullets, the bombs and
fire.
Till at last, at last, the war was
won - and that's why we wear a
poppy, son." The small boy turned
as if to go, then said, "Thanks,
lady, I'm glad to know.
That sure did sound like an awful
fight, but your son - did he come
back all right?"
A tear rolled down each faded
cheek; she shook her head, but
didn't speak. I slunk away in a sort
of shame, and if you were me,
you'd have done the same:
For our thanks, in giving, if oft
delayed, though our freedom was
bought - and thousands paid!
And so, when we see a poppy
worn, let us reflect on the burden
borne by those who gave their
very all when asked to answer
their country's call
That we at home in peace might
live.
Then wear a poppy! Remember and Give!
