to actively offer
health services
in French?
It means having the
capacity to provide
culturally and
linguistically relevant
health services to the
Yukon Francophone
community and
Francophone visitors to
the Yukon.

Why?
It is a question
• of recognition, because the
Francophone community also
needs health care and has
the right to access the quality
health services offered in
the territory;
• of patient safety, as it
ensures that key messages are
fully understood and medical
follow-up is provided;
• of health promotion,
because actively offering
services in French allows the
community to participate
more effectively in our health
care by asking questions in
our own language and also
improves compliance with
treatments because they are
better understood;
• of fairness, as it improves
access to care by removing
the barrier of language and
culture and providing for the
needs of a sometimes invisible
part of the population;
• of excellence, as it helps
make care patient-focused.
Recognized as determinants
of health, language and
culture have an impact on
the health of a population.
Several international studies
have shown that language is an
essential element in a quality
health service. Language
and culture can be barriers
to accessing health services,
especially in a minority setting.
These studies highlight the
importance of working in
collaboration with partners to
develop integrated strategies
for actively offering health
and social services in French,
with a view to both promoting
health and preventing disease.
These are key elements that
make a difference to the health
of minority Francophone
populations in Canada.
