Many residents got dressed up for the occasion and thanks to all of you who joined us to make it a memorable evening. We enjoyed great music by the Joe Palmer Band and wonderful food prepared by our very own, Chef Sarah. Compliments to our activities director, Haylee, for working so hard to make sure everything went smoothly and everyone had fun. We hope you enjoy a few of the photos from that evening. February 2017 Page 2 The Park Pages | The Park at Trowbridge Executive Director Rochelle’s Corner Dear Friends, I hope that you have enjoyed a wonderful start to the New Year. Our New Year’s celebration was a huge success with great participation and many residents dressed in their finest, dancing and toe tapping. We thank you for sharing the names of entertainers you would like to see perform and the types of activities and programs that interest you. We have appreciated your patience as we continue to get better acquainted with you, your family members and the operation of the community. Your suggestions for dining services have been well received and changes have been made on an on-going basis. We know that the fan favorites have been our homemade meatloaf, salmon, fried chicken, fried fish, peach cobbler, ice cream, and the inclusion of more vegetarian options. Please continue to participate in menu chat, the food committee, and resident council. Morrison’s and Chef Sarah want to please you. Over the past month you may have seen me touring the building with the owners and many others. We have engaged designers who are busy developing design plans for the renovations of the common areas of our community. Once the plans have been approved, design boards showing the style and color of the renovations will be posted in the lobby. We are excited for these renovations that will be gorgeous, senior friendly, and will enhance and expand the use of all common areas of the community. I know how anxious we all are to see the renovations begin, but a project of this magnitude takes planning and time. I look forward to updating you on the progress. During this month of February we look forward to celebrating Black History Month and Valentine’s Day as a community. We know you will enjoy the special Valentine’s Day dinner and hope that you will dress up to celebrate this holiday of love. We hope that you will join us for the many activities, programs and out trips. I am pleased to share that your rental rate has not increased since the new owners and PVM began in December and you will continue to pay your current rental rate for this month of February. I want to extend my gratitude to our exceptional staff. They continue to work very hard to best serve you and the overall needs of our community with tremendous respect and kindness. Our team has appreciated your kind words and support as we continue to learn and improve. According to Dr. Thomas, neglecting to do any one of these things can have dire consequences as we age. This month we will focus on what it means to move. I bet most of you have heard the phrase “use it or lose it”. It happens to be particularly true for the human body. Though our bodies are designed for movement, if we don’t move them our muscles, bones, heart, lungs, and even our brains will weaken and begin to function poorly. Fortunately, the opposite is also true. If we become and remain physically active, our muscles, bones, heart, lungs and brains will strengthen and begin to function better. And the good news is that we don’t have train like Olympic athletes to reap the benefits. All we need to do is get up off the couch and take a little stroll. If we did this four times a day for just 5 minutes at a time we would do ourselves a world of good. If walking isn’t your thing, dance instead. Put on some music and move to the groove! The cool thing about dancing is that it can be done sitting or standing and can actually be done with or without music. And for the kind of dancing I’m talking about, there are no rules other than you need to move your entire body: arms, legs, head, and torso. If it’s been a while since you’ve cut the rug (or engaged in any other type of regular physical activity), before you start inviting your neighbors over for regular dance parties, it would be wise to first check with your health care provider to make sure everything is o.k. Once you get the green light, whether you dance, walk, attend exercise classes, use the community fitness center, or do some other form of physical activity the important thing to remember is to move. Choose to move! Your future-self will be glad your current-self made that choice. Please come join us for exercise classes in the Activities Room! This just happened to me the other day upon reading the September 26, 2016 issue of Time Magazine. For years I have led the charge on the notion of embracing aging. The aging process is going to occur no matter what our response is. We can either deny it, defy it, or embrace it. I have found it sad that so many folks choose to be in denial. Plastic surgeons can tell you that the quest for The Fountain of Youth is surging. Yet, aging is much like everything else in life. If we have a positive attitude, we create a far better life experience for ourselves. So imagine the joy I felt upon reading the Time’s article which was headlined with, “How Social Ties Affect the Way You Age.” In the article, author Mandy Oaklander mirrors many of the messages I have promoted as Your Aging Well Advisor over the years. She reflects studies which suggest that some of the best ways to make the most of our extra years include: embrace technology; have family be there for each other; lighten up and enjoy a sense of humor; set goals and take risks, expect the best with a positive attitude; and my favorite, welcome aging. Indeed this new longevity, which many of us have been granted, is providing opportunities our ancestors could only dream about. The chance to be there for a grandchild’s graduation or wedding, or hold a great grandchild in our arms. The possibility to launch a business at middle age or travel around the world. We may want to volunteer at something we have always wanted to become involved with. These are just a few of the many life experiences we now hold dear. We can take a cue from the popular saying: “Do not regret growing older. It is a privilege denied to many,” by Edith Wharton. Embrace aging and enjoy the world!
