All games available online. 249.24 $ The price for Wii includes one Wii Remote, one Nunchuk and a collection of five fun Wii™ Sports games on one disc, which anyone can pick up and play. The Wii Remote Interacting with your entertainment will never be the same. To make gaming as accessible to people of all ages and all abilities, Nintendo created a controller that was as inviting as it was sophisticated. The Wii Remote fuses the familiarity of a remote control with the sophistication of motion-sensing technology to come up with an input device for the ages. Sporting the size of a traditional remote control, the wireless Wii Remote is a multifunctional device that is limited only by the game designer’s imagination. In a tennis game, it serves as your racket you swing with your arm. In a driving game, it serves as your steering wheel. For first-person shooters, the remote acts as your weapon that you point at an enemy. The list of potential uses goes on and on. Using Bluetooth technology, the wireless Wii Remote sends your actions to the Wii console from as far as 30 feet away. As a pointing device, the remote can send a signal from as far as 15 feet away. Up to four Wii Remote can be connected at once, making for great multiplayer fun. In addition to its pointing and motion-sensing abilities, the Wii Remote also includes a speaker, rumble feature and expansion port for additional input devices, such as the Nunchuk controller. Shake, Rattle & Roll With motion sensitivity, the Wii Remote can be manipulated in an almost endless variety of ways depending on the games you play. It even has a speaker built in! The Nunchuk connects to the Wii Remote at its expansion port and is used in conjunction with the Wii Remote. The Nunchuk contains the same motion-sensing technology enabled in the Wii Remote, but also includes an analog stick to assist in character movement. In several games, players will use the analog stick of the Nunchuk to move their characters and the Wii Remote to perform a specific action, whether that’s throwing a pass in football or aiming a ranged weapon in an action game. Along with the analog stick, the motion-sensing Nunchuk also contains two buttons positioned for quick access. Because the Wii Remote and Nunchuk are only relatively dependent on each other, players are free to hold them in whichever hand is most comfortable. The ambidextrous nature of the Wii controllers grants accessibility seldom seen in game controllers. In the same way the karaoke brought people off the couches of their living room to sing songs, so too will the Nunchuk get players more involved in their games. “With the instinctual control of the Wii Remote, Nintendo is advancing the gaming experience to the broadest audience of gamers.” –Robert Kotick, Chairman and CEO, Activision 6 Nintendo Wii BUYER’S GUIDE Not all games available in store. The game is a simple compilation of playable sports games like Tennis, Golf, Baseball, Boxing and Bowling. All of these sports games have a stylized look that’s designed after classic 8-bit game designs but brought to life with full 3D technology. The controls, like the graphics, are simplified to the extreme as each game will concentrate on the core mechanics of hitting a ball, swinging a racket, and putting with a club. For example, in Tennis, players don’t actually move the characters on-screen, but rather swing their rackets. That’s right, your motion will control the gameplay–there’s no button mashing. These games make terrific use of the Wii Remote and truly showcase Nintendo’s vision for the new controller. They also appear to be less intimidating for non-gamers. In the end, Wii Sports is so much fun because people of all ages can enjoy this remarkable play style on such a simple level. We’ll admit it–we plan to play Wii Sports Tennis with our moms just as soon as we get copies. 10 Nintendo Wii BUYER’S GUIDE Not all games available in store. All games available online. Game Style: Racing Need for Speed Carbon Publisher: Electronic Arts ESRB: E10+ Also Available On: Nintendo GameCube, Game Boy Advance Game Style: Sports Madden NFL 07 Publisher: Electronic Arts ESRB: E Also Available On: Nintendo GameCube, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS The people at EA worked overtime to make sure this game delivers not just with updated graphics, which is a given, but with controls that have been completely overhauled to make use of Nintendo’s unique new controller. The interaction between the controller and the game will take players to a whole new level in this storied franchise. To hike a ball in Madden, players simply flick the Wii Remote backward and to throw it, they gesture a throwing motion. The game even distinguishes between lobs and bullet passes based on how hard players motion with the Wii Remote. And that’s just the beginning. Madden on the Wii will be different from any other version of the fran- chise. With a handful of mini-games and an on-the-fly tutorials mode that can be brought up mid-game for practicing punts, field goals, passing, running, or defense, newcomers and hard-core Madden fans will both be able to dive right in. Nintendo fans are in store for a spectacular football outing when the Wii launches and we can say with confidence that Madden NFL 07 for the Wii presents a far more natural and inviting game of football than any previous version. “At EA, we are putting more support behind the Wii than any Nintendo hardware launch since the Super NES.” –Larry Probst, Chairman and CEO, EA AP Wide World Getting a bit tired of the whole street racing concept? This game shines on the Wii and delivers to players a rich gaming experience. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess Publisher: Nintendo ESRB: T Also Available On: Nintendo GameCube At the very least, Twilight Princess is sure to be the best launch game in the history of launch games, but we’re willing to bet it’ll go down as much more than that. The integration of the Wii controller functions gives the game a fresh feel, while still delivering the classic Zelda action and puzzles fans have been waiting for. All of the elements are visually stunning and sure to make your jaw drop as you embark on an adventure that promises to be nothing short of epic. Our hero Link must explore the vast land of Hyrule and uncover the mystery behind its plunge into darkness. Twilight Princess will not only be bigger–a horseback ride from one side of Hyrule to the next is rumored to take 45 real minutes–but much more ambitious than ever before. Link turns into a wolf, crosses into a dark dimension, goes fishing, and rides his way into more dungeons than ever, and he’s just getting started. The enhanced Wii controllers give gamers the ability to shoot arrows and slash the sword using similar motions with the new Wii Remote. Mark our words, this game will become an instant classic when it launches on Wii. The first Zelda™ game was created for the original Nintendo Entertainment System in 1986 by the great Shigeru Miyamoto, who is the father of some of Nintendo’s most celebrated franchises including Donkey Kong, Mario, Star Fox, Pikmin, Nintendogs and many others. Finally, an original console rendition of the micro mini-game series! In case you haven’t enjoyed previous games of the WarioWare franchise, the series is essentially a rapid-fire succession of simple challenges that last no more than five seconds to complete. The randomness of it all means that it’s never apparent what’s coming up until it happens, which gives the game its maniacal flavor throughout its presentation. Nintendo wasted no time bringing the series to Wii in one of the wildest renditions that’ll really show players what the controller’s all about. The unique aspect of the Wii version of WarioWare is that it takes into account the many ways of holding the controller, and recognizes the different ways it can be moved, like balancing a broom on your hand by holding the remote on the open palm. It’s crazy and simple, but players will love this collection of wild and fun microchallenges. The Wii Remote was clearly made for this type of game. Game Style: Fighting Super Smash Bros. Brawl Publisher: Nintendo ESRB: RP When it comes to fighting games, Super Smash Bros. Brawl provides some of the most intense, fast-paced and competitive combat found on consoles anywhere. The Wii’s big brawler is full of surprises and will feature more fighting characters than ever before as gamers wage battle with classic Nintendo characters like Mario, Kirby, Pikachu and Link. The game features a range of new nasty toys, such as the ability to unleash a puppy from Nintendogs that will run up to the screen, put its paws up and obscure the view of the action. Even better, the game will be fully online playable in addition to featuring a robust multiplayer mode. Players who prefer to play the game with the traditional control setup can look forward to using the GameCube control-style they’re already accustomed to. This new title brings a number of new innovations to the table that will earn it a spot as one of the top titles for the Wii. Replay value is upped because of a pointbased system that challenges tricksters to keep trying out stages in order to accumulate higher totals. Wii players can get into the action by flipping the controller on its side and control boarders by twisting left and right and pushing forward or pulling back. Downhill Jam is fast, immediately engaging and good, solid fun. The Pangya golf series has become increasingly popular overseas and now Tecmo hopes to carry the trend to the states with Super Swing Golf for the Wii. The title, which was inspired by the readily available PC games but optimized for Nintendo’s new console, forgoes the popular online mode that has been the staple of the franchise for an enhanced single-player option. We chat with Nintendo of America’s President, Reggie Fils-Aime, about the next generation of video gaming. For those Wal-Mart shoppers not as familiar with the Nintendo brand, will you please explain how you came up with the name Wii for your new gaming console? “Wii” sounds like “we,” which speaks to the all-inclusive nature of the console. That means we want everyone from kids to parents and even grandparents to give it a try. Once they do, they’re going to love it. The name is simple and fun to say. Plus, the “ii” on the end looks like two people coming together to play, or like our two unique controllers for the console. Certainly we’ll have plenty of great games for the hard-core folks. But we’re also making games that reach out and broaden our audience. We’re making games for girls and moms, grandmas and grandpas. “Wii has the ability to be understood and enjoyed instantly by a range of people…and it’s going to revolutionize the way people think about – and interact with – their video games.” –Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime 32 Nintendo Wii BUYER’S GUIDE Not all games available in store. All games available online. What makes the Wii different from the other video game consoles? First off, its fun and anyone can try it. The Wii Remote senses motion and responds to the player’s movements. So all kinds of people can pick it up and start playing, even if they have never played a video game before. Imagine hitting a baseball simply by swinging the controller like a bat. It’s incredibly intuitive, as there are no complicated buttons to memorize. Wii also includes a number of “Channels” that let users check the weather, see the latest news, manipulate photos or even create funny caricatures of themselves that can be used in games. Why is the Wii such a great buy for Wal-Mart’s customers? It provides the best video game experience for the lowest price. We know shoppers want to stretch their dollars to get the best deal they can, and this is it. It’s really something that every member of the family will enjoy. Plus, every Wii console comes with a free copy of Wii Sports, a collection of five sports games: baseball, bowling, tennis, golf and boxing. It also plays the full library of Nintendo GameCube games. So even if you upgrade to the Wii, you can still play all your favorite games. Nintendo is one of the greatest innovators in the history of video games. What do you have in store for gamers with the Wii in order to keep it that way? With its motion-sensing abilities and speaker, the Wii Remote surpasses the abilities of anything else available on the market today. Rather than settling for incremental technological changes, we took a step back and asked ourselves how we could completely change the video game experience to make it fun for everyone, even people who have never played before. It’s truly a system that a gamer and his or her grandfather can play and enjoy. Non-gamers will be particularly interested in the Wii Channel Menu, which offers all kinds of functions, like checking news and weather, sorting family photos or creating your in-game caricatures. Tell us a cool feature about the Wii that most Wal-Mart customers may not know… We have included a feature called the Wii Shop Channel which is the home of Virtual Console. It lets owners download some of their favorite games from the Nintendo Entertainment System, Super NES, Nintendo 64, Sega Genesis and TurboGrafx consoles. Parents can relive games they played as children, while younger kids can experience these classic games for the first time. What are some of your favorite new titles for the Wii? Wii Sports is a collection of some of the sports games I have been describing. It includes games like golf, baseball and tennis. It’s easy to figure out and extremely fun to play. I have watched everyone from young kids to older women give it a whirl, and everyone ends up laughing and having a good time. For more serious gamers, we have The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, a stunningly beautiful game that has a great story and a lot of action to it. Zelda will be available on launch day, as will Excite Truck, a crazy racing game that has players using the Wii Remote like a steering wheel. The Next Gen Leader The world’s largest army of Super Heroes™ is under your control. Create four member strike teams. Choose from over 20 playable characters. Interact with more than 140 legends in all. Become your favorite heroes such as Spider-Man, Wolverine, and Blade, and change the fate of the universe in this epic action-RPG.
