INTRODUCTION
Always a fan of UK film, Toronto International
Film Festival (TIFF) includes an impressive
number of British Films in its 2016 programme.
This catalogue includes details of the UK
productions and official co-productions showing
in the Festival, including the short films, TV and
other special presentations.
You can view a more complete list of titles
currently in production, as well as full details of
all completed shorts and features in the British
Films Directory, compiled by the British Council,
as well as further directories listing both UK
filmmakers and international film festivals, at
www.britishcouncil.org/film
The British Council is just one of a number of key
UK Film organisations represented in Toronto
under the single umbrella of We Are UK Film.
A grouping of UK film commissions, national
and regional agencies and sales companies,
together we provide clear information about our
outstanding locations, services, films and talent,
and we represent the UK Film industry, enabling
connections with both national and international
partners.
The British Council, whose film team acts as a
link between UK films and filmmakers and new
international audiences, works with a range of
programme selector teams from the world’s
premier international film festivals, including
the team from Toronto, to arrange preview
screenings of the best new British films. Find

American Honey
The Autopsy of Jane Doe
Synopsis
Visionary award-winning filmmaker Andrea Arnold
makes her first US-set film with the story of a
teenager who falls into a life on the road. Star
(Sasha Lane), a teenage girl from a troubled home,
runs away with a travelling sales crew who drive
across the American Midwest selling magazine
subscriptions door to door. Finding her feet in this
gang, one of whom is Jake (Shia LaBeouf), she soon
gets into the group’s lifestyle of hard-partying nights,
law-bending days and young love.
Synopsis
Experienced coroner Tommy Tilden and his
grown-up son Austin run a family-owned morgue
and crematorium in Virginia. When the local
Sheriff brings in an emergency case – an unknown
female corpse nicknamed ‘Jane Doe’, found in the
basement of a home where a multiple homicide
took place – it seems like just another open-andshut case. But as the autopsy proceeds, they are
left reeling as each layer of inspection brings
frightening new revelations. Perfectly preserved on
the outside, Jane Doe’s insides have been scarred,
charred and dismembered – seemingly the victim
of an horrific yet mysterious ritualistic torture.
As they begin to piece together these gruesome
discoveries, an unnatural force takes hold of the
crematorium. While a violent storm rages above
ground, it seems the real horrors lie on the inside…

Black Mirror: San Junipero
and Nosedive
Brimstone
Synopsis
Charlie Brooker’s TV anthology series Black Mirror
taps into the collective unease within the modern
world. Each stand-alone episode a sharp and
suspenseful tale exploring themes of contemporary
techno-paranoia. Without questioning it, technology
has transformed all aspects of people’s lives; in every
home, on every desk, in every palm there is a plasma
screen, a monitor, a smartphone – a Black Mirror
reflecting our 21st Century existence back at us. TIFF
presents two episodes from the forthcoming third
season of Black Mirror: San Junipero and Nosedive.
Synopsis
A triumphant epic of survival set in the searing wilds
of the Badlands, the menacing inferno of the old
American West. A tale of powerful womanhood and
resistance against the unforgiving cruelty of a hell on
earth. Liz is formed by the beautiful wilderness, full of
heart and grit, accused of a crime she didn’t commit,
hunted by the vengeful Preacher – a diabolical
zealot. But Liz is a genuine survivor; a woman of
fearsome strength who responds with astonishing
bravery to claim the better life she and her daughter
deserve. Fear not. Retribution is coming.

Synopsis
Synopsis
Based on the true case of Holocaust denier David
Irving detailed in Deborah E. Lipstadt’s acclaimed
book ‘Denial: Holocaust History on Trial’.
Lipstadt mounted a legal battle for historical truth
against David Irving, who accused her of libel when
she declared him a Holocaust Denier. In the English
legal system, the burden of proof is on the accused;
therefore, it was up to Lipstadt and her legal team
to prove the essential truth that the Holocaust
happened.
Holland 1940. The Nazis are rampaging through
Europe. The British have retreated from Dunkirk.
The last German Kaiser, now an old man, has
been living in exile in a big old house in the Dutch
countryside for 25 years, chopping logs and
reading PG Wodehouse. Into this world comes a
young German officer, sent to stop the old man
from defecting to England. Add a beautiful and
mysterious Dutch maid and a British spy and the
stage is set for a gripping spy thriller and love story.

Synopsis
Somerset, England. Trainee veterinarian Clover
Catto returns to the farm where she grew up after
hearing news that her brother Harry has died –
an apparent suicide. Finding the family home in
ruins following recent floods that devastated the
area, Clover is forced to confront her difficult
father Aubrey – about the farm, the livestock and,
crucially, the details surrounding Harry’s death. As
the funeral approaches Clover’s discoveries send
her on an emotional journey of reckoning - with

The Limehouse Golem
Loving
Synopsis
Synopsis
Loving celebrates the real-life courage and
commitment of an interracial couple, Richard and
Mildred Loving, who married and then spent the
next nine years fighting for the right to live as a
family in their hometown. Their civil rights case,
Loving v. Virginia, went all the way to the Supreme
Court, which in 1967 reaffirmed the very foundation
of the right to marry – making their love story an
inspiration to couples everywhere.
London, 1880. In the dangerous Limehouse district,
a series of murders has shaken the community. So
monstrous and ruthless are these crimes the press
claim they are the work of The Golem – a legendary
creature from dark times...
Based on Peter Ackroyd’s best-selling novel
‘Dan Leno And The Limehouse Golem’.

A pregnant woman takes revenge, embarking on
a killing spree that is both vicious and funny. For
ruthless Ruth, will motherhood lead to redemption,

defied that image of the pregnant woman as this
safe, sweet, kind person… I felt like motherhood is a
crazy, interesting experience and it’s rarely seen on
screen.” (Alice Lowe)

Synopsis
The story of American poet Emily Dickinson from
her early days as a young schoolgirl to her later
years as a reclusive, unrecognized artist. Dickinson
wrote a poem a day, but only a fraction of her
output was published throughout her lifetime. She
was extremely shy, but with a wry, lively sense of
humour and loved to laugh or to be made to laugh.
Her friendships were intense but it was within the
family that she found her greatest happiness. Her
life is one of quiet dignity. The poetry magnificent.
All the terror and beauty of the world distilled down
to the quintessence of meaning and expression.

Their Finest
Trespass Against Us

Synopsis
Synopsis
A British film crew attempts to boost morale
during World War II by making a propaganda film
after the Blitzkrieg. A young woman screenwriter
experiences the reality of filmmaking under the
threat of invasion whilst negotiating her way in
matters of life, death and the heart. A screwball
and yet moving portrait of the topsy turvy world
of wartime London.
Torn between loyalty to his father and hope for his
children, a man struggles to reassess his criminal
life. Three generations of the Cutler family live as
notorious outlaws among some of the wealthiest
lands in Britain. They spend their time hunting,
raiding large estates and tormenting the police.
In the midst of it all, Chad (Michael Fassbender)
finds himself torn between respect for his father
(Brendan Gleeson) and a desire for a better life for
his children. The law is cracking down on his clan,
and the decision might not be his to make...

The Sixth Beatle
Synopsis
Everyone thinks Brian Epstein walked into The
Cavern Club on Mathew Street one afternoon
and discovered The Beatles – a raw, unpolished,
amateur band in a dingy basement club in Liverpool
England. While Epstein did make The Beatles famous
worldwide, he didn’t ‘discover’ them. Beatlemania
was born long before Epstein came on the scene.
The Beatles were already the number one standout
group in Liverpool’s massive Merseybeat scene
drawing thousands of screaming fans to their
shows. The Merseybeat movement started with the
help of the ingenuity of a number of local promoters,
lead by the infamous Sixth Beatle, Sam Leach. This is
his story, for without him, there may have never been
a Beatles.

In the Hills
Night Dancing
Synopsis
An immigrant man living in the idyllic Cotswolds
takes a rather radical route towards integrating
into British society.
Synopsis
Every night, Bob is transfixed by the vision of a
woman dancing outside his window; every morning,
he struggles to make sense of it. The line between a

The Watershow Extravaganza
Synopsis
Set entirely in a police car we follow two new
partners officers Gary and Jenny. Their evolving
relationship is an emotional rollercoaster ride
that stands in often-comedic contrast to the
procession of thugs and criminals filling the back
seat.
Synopsis
This piece records a water-music-light attraction
which has been in operation at Watermouth Castle
theme park in North Devon since the early 1980s.
Installed in a child-sized theatre, the performance
synchronises a 1920s Mighty Mortier organ with
a water tray exhibited at the Festival of Britain in
1951.

The White Helmets
Your Mother and I
Synopsis
A small group of volunteer heroes, the White
Helmets defy death, dodging bombs and sniper
fire, to rescue Syrians from the bombs that fall
incessantly on their towns and cities. However,
after three years and with no end in sight, even
the heroes may need to be saved.
Synopsis
Johnna’s dad talks too much, and Johnna herself
lives inside her head. Your Mother and I looks at
the small moments that belie the larger tensions
between families and generations, whilst Johnna’s
dad recounts all the ways he and his wife changed
the world. Or so he says.
