Why do people
move?
Moving West: People living in the
crowded east coast were lured west with
promises of inexpensive land. The
discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill in 1848
prompted thousands to journey west to
California.
Latter-Day Saints (Mormons):
Religion founded in 1830 by Joseph Smith
from New York. Mormons believed in
polygamy (many spouses). Were
persecuted and forced to move west. Settle
in Utah in 1847.
Oregon Trail: 2,000 mile long path that
took four months from Saint Louis. Fur and
timber were the main economic reasons
people moved to Oregon.
Manifest Destiny: Idea that God had
granted the entire North American continent
to Americas.
