POSSIBLE EXPERIENCES
At the Itinerary Development Day, with guidance
from one of our destination experts, the team will be
able to choose from options to finalise their itinerary.
The choices may include the project they work and
where they go for some rest and relaxation!
THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH’S AWARD
Where better to complete the
expedition section of your gold DofE
trek than in the magical South
American nation of Peru? Our
itinerary has been carefully chosen to
enable you to meet all of the ‘20
conditions’ set by the DofE and all in
the stunning scenery of the Peruvian
Andes!
Experience the historical jewel of
South America; the stunning Inca city
of Machu Picchu. Built on the
mountain top overlooking
spectacular forested mountains and
valleys - the city is one of the best
preserved ancient sites in the
Americas. It is also one of the world’s
greatest wonders.
Starting from Huaran, in the Sacred
Valley, the trek will take you four to
five days passing Nevado Chicon
(5530m) and Nevado Siriwani
(5399m) before dropping north to the
colonial village of Lares. The route
will take you through mountain
villages, high alpine passes and offers
spectacular views of the mountains
and surrounding Andes.
Ascend the steps up to these amazing
ruins for spectacular views and an
incredible experience. You will set off
early to allow you the maximum
amount of time to explore the ruins
and the chance to glimpse an
unforgettable sunrise!
Throughout your trek, you will camp
by rivers and in mountain villages,
including Cancha Cancha - a small
community who rear llamas and
alpacas.

PROJECT
You will be helping the Monterosa
project. Set in the beautiful Lucumayu
Valley near Cusco, the project aims to
preserve the flora and fauna of the
area.
The project was named Monterosa
after a beautiful tree that was once
quite abundant in the area, but there
are now very few. They aim to combat
climate change by planting trees and
reforesting the valley which has
slowly been stripped of its trees over
the years. The project also educates
local people on environmental issues
with the hope that they will help to
preserve the forests in their country.
Work on the project will include
assisting locals with building
projects, constructing walls and
planting trees, as well as working
with local school children to discuss
environmental issues.
Contributing to a project provides a
unique opportunity to spend time
with local people and get a true
insight into their way of life, as well
as giving something back to the
country you are visiting.
