According to legend, monks brought the method for making sparkling
wine up from the Languedoc, in the south of France and discovered
that the chalky soil and climatic conditions in the Champagne region
produced a bright bubbly wine. All champagne comes exclusively from
the Champagne region of France. Bubbly from all other regions in the
world is referred to as sparkling wine.

There is so much that this small country has to offer - Iceland is one of the least populated countries in the world.
Believe it or not there is just over 320,000 people - there are more people living in the cities of New Orleans or
Anaheim, California than in the entire country of Iceland. Don’t let the name fool you - Iceland is NOT the frozen
wasteland that you might think - Iceland is south of the Arctic Circle with the exception of the island of Grimsey off
it’s northern coast (a place so remote that birds outnumber people by 1,000 to 1). The Gulf Stream warms Iceland’s
climate resulting in average winter temperatures comparable to those of New York City.
Reykjavik (the capital) will be a great place to start your trip off. It’s a city of bold contrasts - it is both cosmopolitan and
small-town, vibrant and sophisticated, young at heart and yet full of history.
Irish monks are believed to have been the first people who voyaged and settled in Iceland. Fleeing political upheaval and later Viking raids,
they first arrived in Iceland as temporary settlers, sometime between the seventh and ninth centuries. The Irish monk Dicuil noted in 825
that Iceland saw little winter sun but nights so bright in the summer that “whatever task a man wishes to perform, he can manage as well as
in clear daylight”. By 874 the Vikings had arrived in Iceland and began permanent settlement of the island they initially called “Snow Land”.

Amanda’s Amazing Adventures
I am so excited to be going on this Hawaiian Cruise in July. When we arrive in Honolulu we will actually be spending our
pre-nights at the Outrigger Waikiki which is directly on the beach. I love the idea that we can wake up and see the beach
from our window and walk right out onto the sand. We also have an authentic Luau as well as a Waikiki city tour and a
Pearl Harbor Tour included. Then onto the Cruise onboard Norwegians Pride of America. One of the excursions I am most
excited to go on is the Road to Hana in Maui, it is the most scenic drive in Hawaii and I cannot wait! Volcanoes National
Park truly intrigues me as well. As being a person who loves national Parks I am really excited to get to one of the US
National Parks this year since it is the Centennial anniversary of National Parks!
Did you know?:
Hawaii’s nickname is the “Aloha State.” The word aloha is derived from the Proto-Polynesian, alofa, and its meanings
include “love,” “compassion,” and “mercy.” Aloha is used both as “hello” and “goodbye.” The word Hawaii is from the
Proto-Polynesian hawaiki, meaning “place of the gods” or “homeland.”
Hawaii is the only state that is not geographically located in North America, is completely surrounded by water, and does
not have a straight line in its state boundary.
Because of its continuous volcanic eruptions, Hawaii is the only state in the nation to have an increasing land area. Hawaii
has two official languages, Hawaiian and English, though Pidgin, Samoan, and Tongan are also spoken. Hawaii is the only
state in the nation that grows coffee, has tropical rainforests, and is made completely of islands. Surfing, or heenalu, was
invented thousands of years ago by the Polynesians who first settled Hawaii. Their boards weighed more than 150 pounds
and measured up to 20 feet.

Hey ya’ll I have done a lot of planning and have some really great bus trips put together for ya’ll to partake in
this year. First one is going an awesome Fall Foliage Bus Trip to the Great Smoky Mountain National Park,
where you truly will feel the levity of this quote, “There are trees here that stood before our forefathers ever
came to this continent; there are brooks that still run as clear as on the day the first pioneer cupped his hand
and drank from them. In this Park, we shall conserve these trees, the pine, the red-bud, the dogwood, the
azalea, the rhododendron, the trout and the thrush for the happiness of the American people.” - President
Franklin D. Roosevelt. And finally, we will be closing out the year on a fabulous Christmas trip going to the
famed Biltmore Estate and Calloway Gardens. I really hope you will join me on one or all of these amazing
trips!
US National Park Spotlight: Great Smoky Mountain Park
5 reasons you have to visit the Great Smoky National Park in the FALL:
1) Great Smoky Mountains National Park encompasses approximately 244,000 acres in Tennessee and 276,000 acres in
North Carolina for a total of 520,000 acres or more than 800 square miles.
2) In addition to the Appalachian Trail, Great Smoky Mountains National Park features more than 850 miles of hiking trails.
3) The Great Smoky Mountains were formed approximately 200-300 million years ago, making them among the oldest
mountains in the world.
4) The Smoky Mountains fall foliage changes colors because the plants actually stop performing the photosynthesis
process when the days become shorter.
5) You can actually tell what species of tree you are looking at based on its Smoky Mountains fall color. AND Seasonal
temperature and cloud cover can make a big difference on how bright the Smoky Mountains fall colors can be. The more
days that have cool temperatures but do not freeze, the brighter and bolder the colors will be.

Cruising Soufrière Bay, Saint Lucia
Among Saint Lucia’s many charms is its lovely coastline. While cruising Soufrière Bay on the
island’s southwest coast, you’ll have a completely unobstructed view of its iconic twin Pitons.
If you’re looking for that signature shot of Saint Lucia, this is it. These green-swathed volcanic
spires are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Gros Piton (2,530 feet high) and the Petit Piton
(2,438 feet high), which are linked by the Piton Mitan ridge, are features of a volcanic complex
that includes a geothermal field with sulphurous fumaroles and hot springs. The bay itself is
an extinct volcanic crater of great depth and its extraordinarily clear blue waters teem with
marine life. You have a front-row seat of one of the most beautiful sights in Caribbean, so
relax and enjoy the view!
Spotlight on Maui: Road to Hana - The winding road to Hana possesses a mystical quality and
is the most famous drive in all of Hawaii. You’ll feel as though you’re traveling through Maui’s rain
forest on this slow, meandering trip through a lush paradise. Encompassing 52 miles, 617 curves, and
56 one-lane bridges, the Hana Highway starts in Kahului and passes through sugar cane fields and the
beach town of Paia as we make our way through Maui’s spectacular tropical rain forest. The Pools Of
Oheo Gulch are part of Haleakala National Park and are located in eastern Maui, about 40 minutes beyond
Hana. Formed by the Pipiwai Stream, which is great for swimming. Not far beyond the Pools is the Palapala
Hoomau Church with its tiny cemetery, where the American aviation pioneer Charles Lindbergh is buried.
This is definitely worth a stop. Unlike anything you’ve probably seen before, lava tubes are created when
lava from volcanic vents forms a river that crusts over on top. These tubes can transport lava for over 20
miles and are certainly a sight to see.
Did You Know?
- Roseborough Travel has been hosting an Annual
Thanksgiving Cruise for over 25 years.
- The ms Koningsdam is the newest ship to
Holland Americas Fleet. THE FIRST of its class of
ship.
- The ms Koningsdam will not only be the first
to bear that name, she will usher in a new era
of Pinnacle-class cruising. Pinnacle means “high
point”—and the debut of ms Koningsdam is a
high point in Holland America Line history.
- As heir, she’ll carry forward all of the tradition,
nautical heritage, signature service and style
for which Holland America Line is known—
while raising the bar for 21st-century elegance.
Her name sets the tone. Its roots, like the ship
itself, are a mix of something contemporary
and something classic: “Koning,” means king in
Dutch—and is a salute to King Willem-Alexander,
the Netherland’s first king in more than 100
years. And “dam,” because, after all … this is
a Holland America Line ship, and the “dam”
naming convention dates back to 1883.

Why not experience the heart of Europe on a river cruise. The contrasts of the East and West are
so diverse and each river has something different to offer.
Cruise along the Seine from the center of Paris to the beaches of Normandy stopping along the
way in Giverny where Monet was inspired for his impressionist art of flower and water gardens.
Wend your way along the Rhone and you’ll pass rolling hills dotted with vineyards, the Provencal
countryside with fields of purple lavender and the valleys of colors that inspired Van Gogh.
The Douro River in Portugal sets a pretty leisurely pace, there are long blissful spells on the water
without even seeing other boats, cruising narrow stretches of the upper Douro between steep
rocky slopes on which thousands of port wine grapes are cultivated and from where the Brits
started the Port Wine Industry over 300 years ago.
The rivers of Central Europe flow as one from the North Sea to the Black Sea, together connecting
the world of Rembrandt to the land of Mozart, the vineyards of the Wachau Valley to the palaces
of Vienna and the Alps of Switzerland to the coastal towns of Romania.
The Romantic Rhine carries you through history, with its pretty villages and rich cultural
heritage is where myths and legends abound and the scenery is what dreams are made of.
One of the most popular cruises is along the Danube from Nuremberg to Budapest with its
Imperial cities and fairy tale castles engrossing you along the way.
By adding your pre-nights in the beautiful city of Prague, you can endlessly stroll through cobbled
streets and stand in awe of the baroque style buildings, gothic churches and the famous medieval
astronomical clock then enjoy a few jugs of ale in the beer halls!
Windmills
and Tulips
I was so lucky to have been there in December for the Christmas markets and watch the snow
falling in the Old Market Square, it was magical, and walking across Charles Bridge in the
morning fog was mystical and serene like a scene out of a movie.
Watch Tom Cruise in “ Mission Impossible “ and you’ll get the idea!

They say days and nights with Holland America Line are among the most memorable of a lifetime.
If you are looking for some of the most spacious and comfortable ships at sea, award-winning service, five star dining,
extensive activities and enrichment programs and compelling worldwide itineraries, you’ve come to the right place.
This year’s Thanksgiving cruise onboard the Koningsdam features BARBADOS!!!
…Just because you may only have a few quick hours in Barbados doesn’t mean that your experience in this amazing Caribbean nation has to be a shallow one. Barbados is a cruise lover’s dream. Small, yet culturally rich, Barbados has got shore
excursions in a big way. From exploring the tropical beaches of this beautiful island to visiting seeing the underwater world
via submarine, you’ll be amazed at what you can accomplish in just a day.
Did you know :
• The name ‘Barbados’ is derived from the Bearded Fig Trees once found in abundance on the island.
• Barbados is the 3rd oldest Parliamentary democracy in the world.
• The last major hurricane to hit Barbados was Hurricane Janet in 1955.
• Barbados is the 16th most densely populated country.
• Bridgetown was originally called Indian Bridge and changed to its current name after 1654.
• The Lord Nelson Statue, erected on Bridgetown’s Trafalgar Square on 22 Mar 1813, is older than the statue and
square of the same name and fame in London.
• AND (possibly my favorite “fun fact” of all) Barbados exports $57 million of rum per year across the world!
Cheers to that lovely bunch of coconuts!
Gotta love Barbados!
