The Hardest of Questions
Rabbi Loren Filson Lapidus
W
ith all of the preparations — spiritual, physical, culinary — which are done for the High Holy Days,
there is a natural letdown once Yom Kippur ends. The grand
sounds of choir and organ, the stirring blast of the shofar, the
energy of a chapel full of tots and a Schwartz-Goldstein hall
full of families, the powerful words of our liturgy, are all over
and will return next year.
The challenge is to bring this momentum into our new
year in meaningful ways. Instead of leaving the holidays
behind, we can bring the spiritually-resonant ideas into our
daily lives. As a contemporary version of Unataneh Tokef by
Rabbi Jack Reimer says, “Let us ask ourselves hard questions
for this is the time for truth. How much time did we waste
in the year that is now gone? Did we fill our days with life, or
were they dull and empty? Did we live right, and if not, then
have we learned, and will we change?”
There are many hard questions that we ask during the
High Holy Days that should not remain only in those ten
days. I have chosen a few from Rabbi Reimer’s poem that I
personally find meaningful, and invite you to consider these
and other questions as we move forward into 5771:
The kind deed: did we perform it or postpone it? We speak
often about the importance of performing mitzvot, commanded deeds, and acts of gemilut chasadim, acts of lovingkindness. As a congregation, we are committed to the values of social justice and tikkun olam, repairing our world.
Many volunteer with our Zaban Couples Center, help out
with a project on Mitzvah Day (October 3, 2010) and even
more bring food for our Yom Kippur collection for MAC.
The question we must ask ourselves and answer honestly is
whether we are performing acts of tikkun olam outside of
these formal opportunities. How are we modeling for one
another, and especially our children, the values that we speak
of in our community? Could we be more involved in the Tik-
kun Olam Council here at Temple, and could we do more to help make our world better in small
ways each and every day?
Did we mind only our own business or did we feel the heartbreak of others? When we return
to our normal, busy lives, it is all too easy to get caught up in our own business and needs.
Amidst the hectic pace, it is possible to say we will call someone to check in and then days or
even weeks go by without that phone call. When we focus on
our own lives, we can avoid the pain that others feel, we can
compartmentalize our human emotions and fears. Yet our
tradition asks us to do more to feel the pain of others and to
help them through their difficulties. When we reach out to
someone in a time of need, both we and they are better for
it. I invite you to consider getting involved in Caring at The
Temple to reach out to others in these moments of need by
delivering chicken soup (even just once!) or being matched
to visit someone who is homebound through our Bikur Cholim (visiting the sick) program. And, in less formal ways, how
can we be more compassionate towards others who feel the
pain of illness or loss?
Was there a real companionship with our children or was there a living together and growing
apart? Were we a help to our mates or did we take them for granted? So much of our lives are centered around our homes and families, and as such, how we treat those closest to us is extremely
important. We must ask ourselves honestly whether we are creating meaningful relationships
with our children regardless of their age, or if we are choosing other priorities or concerns. Are
we being helpful to our partners, or are we going each day without seeing them and saying “I
love you.” How can we do better with our families, to create good relationships in this new year?
Did we acquire only possessions or did we acquire new insights as well? It is possible to be
complacent when it comes to our acquisitions. After all, it can be more fun to get a new toy than
to take a class or read a book, although some can be more lasting than others. In this new year, we
should challenge ourselves to go beyond the material, and also to go beyond the pressure to follow what’s popular. There are wonderful books to read, classes to attend, conversations to have,
and questions on which to meditate. Each day brings new experiences with the potential for new
insight, if we are open to that new insight.
Ultimately, all of these questions come down to one: Am I living each day of this year in my
life to its fullest in as many ways as possible? A simple question, yet a complicated challenge. Our
goal for this year, for any year, is not perfection, it is holiness. Each day is an opportunity to gain
insight, to find meaning, to give and receive love, and to help repair the world.
I hope that 5771 is full of many such days for you and your families. =

The Temple's Food Drive a Huge Success
T
hank You Temple Family! Our food drive was a
huge success and the truck was totally filled.
This will go a long way in helping the clients at Midtown Assistance Center (MAC).
Due to the economy, for the first time since its formation over twenty years ago, MAC has had to turn
away large numbers of individuals requesting assistance. Monetary donations are always welcome and can
be sent directly to MAC, 30 Porter Place, Atlanta, GA
30308.
Thank you to our workers! All that food needs to be
unloaded, sorted, stacked on shelves and boxed. We
couldn’t have done it without the helping hands of the
following Temple members:
Ken Prager, Todd Slutzky, Michael Lipsey, John Berry,
Karen, Hannah & Rachel York, Rachel, Cydney & Ilene
Wolchock, Susan Banner, Hamilton Greene, Robin
Blocker, Nanci Halper, Ronnie van Gelder, Mindy

Otte & Jennifer Bush Otte, Ethan & Faith Levy & Edith Finegold
A special thanks to Ken Prager and Todd Slutzky who every year plan and
organize this project long before the truck appears.
Next year – Larger truck! More food! More volunteers! =
Midtown Assistance
Center Update
Over the past 7 months, MAC has prevented the eviction of 469 families and
utility disconnections of 443 households. As a result of this record-breaking assistance, MAC’s resources have been depleted. Midtown Assistance Center finds
itself in the position of needing donations of men’s socks, underwear, food for
the food pantry, as well as monetary donations. Thank you for your continued
support! For additional information about Midtown Assistance Center, please
contact Rebecca Richard or Dorothy Chandler at 404.681.0470 or [email protected] =

Co-sponsored by American Jewish Committee and the ADL.
On Tuesday, October 12, The Temple will play host to all three major candidates for the 2010 Governor's race: Nathan Deal (Republican), Roy Barnes
(Democrat), and John Monds (Libertarian). During this candidates forum,
these three men will take questions on their differing policy positions. Please
join us for this community-wide event. If you have any questions, contact
Ronnie van Gelder at 404.873.1731 or [email protected]. =
Get Involved
at The Temple
Beginning on Sunday, October 10, The Temple will join with seven
other faith communities for our Habitat for Humanity building project. Our efforts will help put people into homes of their own, a wonderful mitzvah. The build itself will take place on seven consecutive Sundays (October 10, 17, 24, 31 and November 7, 14, and 21)
and we need volunteers for all of the Sundays.
Each work day will begin with a brief service conducted by clergy
from the various congregations, and we will be working with volunteers from all of these congregations.
Also, to satisfy our financial commitment to this project, each
volunteer, 16 years and over will need to contribute or raise $75 for
individuals, $100 for two or more family members. Even if you cannot physically participate in the building, you can still support our
efforts with a financial contribution. Please do your part to continue
our long-standing tradition of social justice. =
We would love for every congregant to become involved in the life of The Temple. Our history is not the history of a building, a clergy, or a staff. It is the history of thousands of congregants, members of our community
who have taken an active role in social justice, learning, worship, and more. We are happy to help you find
the right opportunity. Just contact either Louis Lettes at 404.593.5357 or Stacey Lewinstein at 404.281.3715.

The Zaban Couples Center's Plan for the Future
T
he Zaban Couples Center is ready for the 2010-11
season. It is exciting to continue programs that began
last year as a result of the Homeless Prevention and Rapid
Rehousing Program (HPRP), a source of stimulus funding
we received from the Department of Housing and Urban
Development. To continue this important work, your
financial support is vital. Program components need to be
developed and best practices must to be identified. As has
previously been announced, the Center has set up a separate 501(c)(3) organization and intends to start soliciting
funds from outside the Temple. To do that, we need financial support from our members to demonstrate continuing
commitment to this important endeavor.
The Center’s participation in programs like HPRP is vital,
not only to residents, but to the future of the Zaban Couples
Center. As you no doubt know, the Center has evolved considerably over the past 26 years.
Originally, residents were provided with shelter, a hot meal and nothing more. Today, residents
receive couples counseling, a course in financial management, and ongoing case management.
Those who qualify receive rental subsidies. We now document program outcomes, providing
data essential to compete for external funding. And, the Center has a plan for continued success:
< A plan to use the performance reporting to apply for more and varied grants;
< A plan to develop ‘best practices’ in order to meet the requirements of agencies that grant
‘seals of approval’ to non-profits.
< A plan to create a micro-enterprise component, enabling residents to use the skills they
already have to support themselves.
< A plan to partner with local businesses that will provide residents with job training and
apprenticeships.
Please begin this new year by supporting the Center with donations of any size. What began
in 1984 as a social action project has evolved into a major social services program and will, with
your help, become a competitive ‘best practices’ non-profit organization. =

Sunday, October 24 @ 10:00 am
Joey Asher, Speechworks
Please join us on Thursday, October 21, for the
next meeting of The Temple Book Club. We meet
at the Borders Book Store in Buckhead opposite
Phipps Plaza.
For October, we'll be reading The Pigeon and a
Boy by Meir Shalev. This wonderful novel weaves
two narratives, one in the present and one in the
1948 Israeli War of Independence. It won Israel's
Brenner Prize and received a starred review in
Publishers Weekly. =
This October, The Temple's Movie Chaver
will kick off an exciting program lineup with
a free wine and cheese event here at The Temple. Rabbi Rachael Bregman will speak on the
myriad spiritual influences in the world of
film. An exciting talk for film lovers and the
spiritually curious alike.
Join us in Schwartz-Goldstein Hall from
3:00 to 5:00 PM on Sunday, October 17. We
look forward to seeing you. =
