“Volunteers are not paid, not because they are worthless; but because
they are Priceless”
May 2016
Welcome to the latest edition of the Volunteer Services Newsletter.
Volunteers are a continued success within the Trust, working alongside our staff,
creating a better experience for patient/clients. The benefits are widely recognised,
increasing the demand for volunteers. We currently have 520 volunteers and are
keen to recruit more! Please tell your friends/family!

Staff from Volunteer Services will be visiting sites across the SE Trust over the coming weeks to
meet with volunteers and take photos as part of our promotional campaign
“What Does Volunteering Mean to you?”
We hope to use your quotes and photos to encourage others to consider volunteering.
We are also keen to promote individual volunteer stories. How/why did you get involved in
volunteering? What do you do as a volunteer? How is your role making a difference? Has
volunteering been of benefit to you? If you are interesting in telling your story, please get in touch, it
could help someone else take the next step to becoming a volunteer.

Sally Greer’s Story – Volunteering within Towerview
Sally Greer has been volunteering with
Towerview Resource Centre since February
2008.
Sally had worked in Towerview for 17 years and
when she retired she decided that she would
love to go back and see all the patients and staff
members again.
Sally volunteers every Wednesday from 10:0012:30pm and facilitates a regular knit craft
activity group and is also a member of the

sold and all money raised is spent on clients
such as paying for their dinners on the summer outings and buying the clients Christmas presents.
This money is also used to buy equipment needed within the Centre such as computers.
Towerview Manager Darren Bradshaw says “Sally has what seems boundless energy and
throughout her working life has brought a passion for dance, music and fun to the centre. Sally's
infectious laughter just brings peoples mood up and her connection with the service users makes
the time she gives to us invaluable.”

Our Staff’s View
Sister Karen Hull, Ward 22
“Since I came to work in the Ulster in 1997 Jim has
been a Volunteer.
Jim comes into the ward and engages with all staff
members, enquiring how individuals are and getting a
heads up on the ward. He then visits the patients,
chatting, running errands for them, going to the shop
for papers and generally being a presence and
listening. We all love to see Jim walk into the ward.
Jim is unobtrusive, yet supportive. I have never heard a complaint in all these years and he is just
wonderful to have. Jim has become part of the ward team and will even socialise with us at Christmas
and at other staff events.
The patient’s love him; he is gentle, he sits with them, sometimes for long periods. This frees up the
nursing staff to continue with their work.
Jim has a charm that engages the patients and often an agitated patient will settle because Jim spends
time with them, listening to them.
Jim knows his role as a volunteer and never oversteps this; allowing me the confidence to let him move
freely within the ward. I suppose Jim has been around for such a long time he knows the place well
and we know him well. If we could clone another dozen of Jim the patients in hospital would definitely
benefit from this.”
Many thanks to Sister Karen Hull in Ward 22 for these kind words
