Jilted Jay, Caitlin cooled off EDITOR’S LETTER Being on TV looks glamorous. It’s not – I’ve spoken with too many actors and been on too many sets to be naïve. But it still looks glamorous. And I know that most actors truly do it for the love of the job. To see how feeble their contracts are and that they have no job security really is an eye-opener. Imagine having to wait every nine to 12 months to hear if your contract is renewed? Read all about it on p8. If that makes your head spin, don’t turn to page p14 for the spider web of evilness and deceit on Revenge. It’s like a maze of backstabbing. And don’t miss our Phenyo timeline on p22! Congrats, Melusi Yeni, on your new Muvhango role! We’ll miss you on Generations but can’t wait to see what you bring to the Mojalefa clan. PS: enter to win great Disney hampers on p40, just in time for the holidays! Hi tvplus, will Jay Anstey (Charlie) ever return to Isidingo? Miss her character! – LEBO MNGUNI, DURBAN While we hear that Charlie’s coming back, she won’t be played by Jay Anstey. Apparently the producers have decided to recast the role – without even telling Jay, who told us she found out from a friend on set. More bad news is that Caitlin’s antics will come to an end by January. Carine Rous, who’s played the feisty reporter since September, will leave Isidingo before the end of the year. Explains publicist Sindiswa Nene, “Carine is a call actor – she is called if and when she’s needed, just like any other call actor on the show. Yes, Catlin’s storyline is coming to an end but this doesn’t mean that she’s being written out. We’re not killing her and she could always come back.” A source on set told us that Carine found out that she’s leaving after reading scripts and wasn’t told in person. BINNELANDERS BOW OUT Hi tvplus! I heard rumours that Binneland’s fired its main actors, while someone said that they’re on strike, like Generations recently. Can you clear it up? – GERHARD DE LANGE, CENTURION Let’s put those rumours to rest. There’s no strike, but four cast members are leaving in 2014: Dawid Minnaar (Franz), Elma Postma (Bea), Neels van Jaarsveld (Gideon) and Odelle de Wet (Delia) will depart by March. “It’s inherent to a series that airs daily: characters are written in, they fulfil a function xxxxx xxx xxx xBinneland xx Bye bye for and then it’s time to say goodxxxxx xvan xxxxxJaarsveld. bye,” says producer Elsje Stark. Neelsxxx GOSSIP QUEEN Hey tvplus. Whatever happened to 7de Laan’s Zinzi? I miss her gossipy ways – TASHNEEQAH BRITNEY ABRAHAMS, ESTERN CAPE We’ve been missing Caroline Jacobs (Zinzi) since she left Hillside in 2012, pregnant with her second child. “Sadly, my contract wasn’t renewed,” says Caroline, who does corporate role-playing, MCing and motivational speaking. Would she ever return to Hillside? If the writers wanted her back, Caroline’s a busy girl, just not on 7de Laan. she’d be more than happy to return, Caroline says. Why is that? BY THE TVPLUS TEAM, EDITED LEZANNE JANSE VAN RENSBURG. PHOTOS: DANIE ODENDAAL PRODUCTIONS, DANIEL DAVID, DANIEL PARKER, DSTV, GALLO IMAGES, GETTY IMAGES, SABC1, SABC3/ENDEMOL, URBAN BREW STUDIOS, WALDO SWIEGERS, WARNER BROS. STUDIOS INTERNATIONAL. It seems Mary-Anne loves playing Doctor Doctor. – ANDREA MARTINS, POTCHEFSTROOM That may have something to do with the fact that Mary-Anne Barlow, who plays Frank’s ex on Isidingo, will soon be moving out of The Deep. She’ll be appearing on the Afrikaans soap Binneland from January next year. And guess what? She’ll still be wearing doctor’s scrubs – she’s playing Dr Vivienne Armandt. The role isn’t permanent though, so it looks like she’ll be doing both shows at the same time. READERS CHATS TO TVD on SABC2 – music to our ears. BLOODY BEAUTIFUL Hi team tvplus, I adore the song playing whenever they advertise The Vampire Diaries on SABC2. Do you have any info on the song? – – ELIZABETH MAGOLANE, MAMELODI You wouldn’t believe the number of requests we got for this song. So here you go! The song’s name is Dead Of Night and can be found on the Chicks That Rock Vol 1 album. While the artist’s name isn’t known, you can listen to it online at chicagomusiclibrary.com. Melissa Claire Egan. Some might remember her as the unstable Annie Lavery in All My Children and others might recognise her as the unlucky-in-love Chelsea Newman from Y&R, but who’s the brown-eyed 32-year-old behind all the onscreen drama? We zoom in on Melissa Claire Egan and ask her all your burning questions. Do you prefer playing Annie or Chelsea? – JACQUELINE SANGERHAUS, BRAKPAN MORE CHANNELS Hi tvplus, I spotted something on your Facebook page about new channels on DStv. What can we expect? – DANIE MALAN, ELARDUSPARK From Tuesday 12 November, DStv has added even more entertainment to their alreadypacked selection with four new channels. CBS Action, CBS Drama and JimJam are available to DStv Access, Family, Compact, Extra and Premium packages, while MGM’s available to DStv Access, Family, Compact and Extra subscribers. Here’s what to expect from the channels: CBS Drama (channel 134): the name says it all. From old classics including Dallas and Knots Landing to Matlock, Touched By An Angel and even Judge Judy. CBS Action (channel 133): if it’s got guns, gore and gadgets, it’ll be found here. Expect to see Dexter, Nash Bridges and even Wonder Woman. JimJam (channel 310): call the little ones! Thomas The Train, Barney and Bob The Builder will keep your kiddies entertained. MGM Channel (channel 140): sit back, relax and get ready for classic movies like West Side Story, Rain Man and Silence Of The Lambs. www.twitter.com/tvplus Maggie Benedict’s on her way out. FEARFUL FAN Now that the Generations strike is over, I’m worried that viewers will be affected. Please, tvplus – calm my nerves – GABBIE MOHLATSI, CAPE TOWN Don’t worry! Generations will be on our screens in its usual timeslot without interruptions. However, the cast and crew have a lot of catching up to do, so to prevent loyal fans from losing out, the Generations team will be cutting their December holidays short to continue filming. The bad news though is that it looks like Maggie Benedict (Akhona) won’t be returning. Jena dove right into her new role. RED ALERT Hi tvplus, any new characters to look out for on Rhythm City? – JJ OLIVER, PRETORIA Expect to see a fiery redhead in 2014. The gorgeous former Scandal! star Jena Dover, who’s also a practising lawyer, will make her Rhythm City debut on 22 January for a short stint. She’ll play newcomer DH’s (Siyabonga Twala) PA Stefanie, who’ll assist him in more ways than one if you get what we’re saying. Turns out she has an eye for her boss… It seems Room9’s checked out for good. Annie was fun and crazy and capable of anything. Chelsea is such a different character compared to Annie. She’s a more normal character, loyal and with good intentions. What are you favourite shows on TV? – BUSI NKOSI, JOHANNESBURG Homeland, The Newsroom and I’ve just started Game of Thrones. I know I’m so behind but everyone tells me it’s so good. And I’m starting now with Breaking Bad. What do you like to do at home? – AMANDA KLEIN, PORT ELIZABETH I love exercising. I live with my fiancé in Santa Monica and we live close to the beach, so I love riding my bike and I do a lot of yoga and I play tennis. How are the wedding plans? – EMMARENTIA GELDENHUYS, JOBURG We’re getting married on 26 July 2014 and the planning is coming along nicely. We have a planner who’s helping us. How do you take care of yourself? – PRECIOUS SIBANDA, JOBURG ROOM FOR MORE Hey tvplus, earlier this year there was a great show on SABC1 called Room9. Will there be a second season? – BOKAMOSO KUNENE, KEMPTON PARK At this stage the production team doesn’t have plans to make a second season. However, that doesn’t mean it’s over. In July, Africa Channel UK picked up the first season of this creepy show and it’s being enjoyed by European fans. Some have likened the show to Torchwood, which we think is pretty awesome. I’ve realised how important sleep is. If you can get as much sleep as possible, it’ll change your face and skin. What would you be doing if you weren’t an actor? – SWEETNESS PHELEMBA, NELSPRUIT I’ve always wanted to be a teacher. I would’ve liked to teach English and drama and then direct school plays. p tvplus 27 November 2013 5 HotList Wednesday 27 Nov SEE MO RE ON P45 the 29 best shows on TV this issue Thursday 28 Nov Friday 29 Nov Saturday 30 Nov SEE MO RE ON P14 MODERN FAMILY 5 M-Net 19:30 E1 REVENGE 3 M-Net 19:30 E1 RULES OF ENGAGEMENT 6 SABC3 20:00 E15 MEDIUM 7 M-Net Series Showcase Phil manipulates Luke, Hayley and Alex to get them out of the house so that he and Claire can have seven kid-free days. Trending Ever wondered how much your favourite soapie apie st star coins every month? We went digging… kay, we know it’s not polite to talk about how much you earn, but with the recent Generations strike, soapie star salaries are definitely in the spotlight. We decided to find out what actors earn and what their contracts look like. Rumour has it O It was rumoured that, on cancelled M-Net soap Egoli (which ran from 1992-2010), big names like Brümilda van Rensburg (Louwna) and Shaleen Surtie-Richards (Nenna) earned more than R50 000 before deductions. Winnie Modise, Khethiwe on Generations, is a veteran actress and could earn up to R80 000 per month. VETERAN Lorcia Cooper, Erin on Scandal!, is a known face and could earn up to R26 000 per month. KNOWN FACE Known faces are actors with between five to ten years’ experience on screen and in soaps. A veteran has over ten years’ experience on screen and is usually very popular. SALARY: R3 000 to R5 000 per episode or R35 000 to R80 000 per month. BUMPED UP: The line between new and known faces can get blurry. Often a new character gains popularity very quickly and can then become a known face before the five-year average. BEST-PAYING SOAP FOR A VETERAN: 1. Generations Between R50 000 and R80 000. Their highest-paid stars are probably Sophie Ndaba as Queen, Menzi Ngubane as Sibusiso and Winnie Modise as Khethiwe. 2. 7de Laan R35 000 to R60 000. Their highest-paid stars are probably Pierre van Pletzen in the role of Oubaas and Vinette Ebrahim playing Charmaine. 3. Isidingo R25 000 to R30 000. Robert Whitehead (Barker) is probably one of the best paid. IN HOLLYWOOD: $1 500 to $3 000 per episode or $156 000 to $312 000 per year. IN HOLLYWOOD: $2 000 to $5 000 (or more) per episode or $208 000 to $520 000 per year. SALARY: R2 500 to R3 000 per episode or R15 000 to R26 000 per month. Andrea Streso, 7de Laan’s Danelle, could earn up to R12 000 per month. NEW FACE New faces are start-outs in the industry. SALARY: R2 000 to R3 000 per episode or R8 000 to R12 000 per month. BUMPED UP: Sources say that a new face on 7de Laan earns R5 000 to R8 000 monthly. It could go up to R12- or R15 000 if the character’s popular and writers keep them around. IN HOLLYWOOD: $700 to $1 500 per episode or $72 800 to $156 000 per year. www.facebook.com/tvplus Trending On the dotted line DETERMINING FACTORS There are several things than can have an influence on how much actors will take home every month: t How many “calls” you have in your soap. Not all actors are in each and every episode. The average actor usually appears in 12 episodes per month; just more than half of the usual 20 episodes if a soap’s broadcast five times a week. This means that the average soap actor may earn in the region of about R4 000 to R6 000 per week, which means that they’ll be on the same level as a known actor. t The status factor. Are they a new face, recognisable or an A-list veteran? How much experience does the actor have? And, of course, how popular are they and their character? Even though Diaan Lawrenson has only been with 7de Laan since 2002, her character is extremely popular and she’s likely to earn far more than her years on the soapie would normally dictate. t Tax. Actors also pay tax, which means a deduction of 10-25 percent from their salary. t Agent’s commission. Agents aren’t free and can take anywhere between 10 and 20 percent of an actor’s salary. And you probably need one to get acting roles. WHO’S THE BOSS? It’s important to understand who’s responsible for paying the actors’ salaries. Broadcasters, like M-Net, kykNET, e.tv or the SABC, appoint production houses such as Endemol (Isidingo), Danie Odendaal Productions (7de Laan), Ochre Media (Scandal!) and Stark Films (Binneland). The broadcaster pays the production house, BY ELRI SMIT. PHOTOS: DANIE ODENDAAL PRODUCTIONS, DANIEL DAVID, E.TV. SOURCES: WWW.ONELIFETOLIVE.ABOUT.COM, WWW.EHOW.COM, WWW.SAGUILDOFACTORS.CO.ZA. THE INS AND OUTS OF GUEST STARS Producers also want flashy guest actors from time to time to inject some juice into storylines. Here the salary also depends on various factors and status plays a very big role in determining salary. Think of someone like Zama Ngcobo, who’s played Generations’ Thabitha, or Abigail Kubeka, who pops in and out of Scandal! as Daniel’s mom. Background extra: a paltry R150 to R300 per day. Background extra with one to five sentences of dialogue: R400 to R600 per day. Guest actors: depending on your popularity this can range anywhere between R2 000 and R3 000 per episode. which in turn pays the actors. Liby Nel, 7de Laan’s publicist, says: “We pay our actors according to the guidelines set out by SABC2. Within our budget, we make provision for the actors and it differs according to their level of experience.” Annual increases, as with most companies, vary between 3 to 10 percent. Do non-soapies pay more? Non-soap series typically pay more. But the shows aren’t ongoing like soapies and are limited to a certain number of episodes – 13 to 26 – like 90 Plein Street (see p17). The other downside is that it takes three to six months for production to wrap and then you’re out of work again. According to Jack Devnarain (Isidingo’s Rajesh), multiple factors determine salaries in other genres and it can range from R5 000 to R50 000 per episode. For a movie, an average SA actor can expect about R60 000 for a couple of months’ work. HOLLYWOOD HONEYS Actors in the US earn a lot more than our local ones. Two And A Half Men’s former leading man Charlie Sheen took home an astronomical $825 000 (around R8.5million) for every episode before he was fired in 2010. William Petersen (CSI’s Gill Grissom from 2000 to 2013) earned $600 000 per episode (over R6 million) and Simon Cowell gets $50 million (R516 million) per year just for the rights to www.twitter.com/tvplus American Idol even though he’s no longer a judge on the hit reality show. Soap actors also earn more in Tinseltown than they do in most other countries. In a recent interview with 5FM’s Gareth Cliff, Texas Battle (Bold’s Marcus) spilled that bigname co-stars like Ronn Moss (Ridge) and Susan Flannery (Stephanie) easily earned $40 000-$45 000 (almost R500 000) a month. t According to an actor who we spoke to (who wants to remain anonymous), it’s beneficial to get an agent as most actors love acting so much that they’ll do it for next to nothing. An agent protects the financial interests of the actor and ensures they get decent salaries, increases and opportunities to grow their careers. Agents also assist with contract negotiations and quibbles into higher tariffs per episode. t The average contract is for between 9 and 12 months for a permanent actor (not a lot of job security there), while guest actors sign for even shorter periods. t Actors have very few benefits and job security. For example, Caroline Jacobs, who played Zinzi on 7de Laan, fell pregnant in 2012 with her second child and her contract was terminated. The lack of job security is one of the reasons that the Generations actors recently went on strike – you never know when the writers will write out your character and you suddenly find yourself without income. t Actors also get no medical aid or retirement fund from the production house. They have to sort those out themselves. t Jack Devnarain, who’s also the co-founder of the South African Actors Guild, encourages actors to become guild members – it advises on everything from contract negotiations to maternity leave. “We’re seen as a kind of actors’ union, but legally we can’t be called that since there’s a dispute if actors are employees or independent contractors,” he says. p tvplus 27 November 2013 9 Straight from Hollywood The late Cory Monteith, best known as Glee’s Finn Hudson. Glee 5 Wednesdays M-Net Showcase 20:30 eated in the Four Season’s Hotel in Beverly Hills, the mood is sombre. We’re about to watch a special screening of the Glee tribute episode to Cory Monteith, the romantic interest and reallife boyfriend of Lea Michele (Rachel). She’s avoided discussing his untimely death due to a drug overdose in a Vancouver hotel room on 13 July earlier this year. Cory had been battling drug addiction for some time, but no one who met the gentle giant would’ve known. He came across as the clean-cut all-American athlete. His charm was that he seemed totally unaware of his appeal. He had a shy way of lowering his chin and smiling with his lips together, like he didn’t want to let the words inside out. It was a shock to the entertainment community when his lifeless body was found in his hotel room. And only now did Lea talk about what he meant to her, along with Ryan Murphy, the co-creator of the show and man who gave Cory his first big break. Also on hand are Jane Lynch (Sue) and Matthew Morrison (Mr Shue). I dreaded a tearfully sentimental episode where viewers ware emotionally manipulated. Instead, I found myself choking back tears. The reason for Cory’s death is never addressed, but the impact of losing someone suddenly is handled with taste and subtlety. The songs are just terrific and this is an episode that shouldn’t be missed when it airs on SA TV screens on Wednesday 4 December. Farewell, Finn! BY MARGARET GARDINER. PHOTOS: FOX, GETTY IMAGES.
