Begin by sketching 3-4 ideas for your completed collage. Each sketch should be based on 3-4 shapes and 1
color scheme. Shapes can be organic and/or geometric. Color schemes can include primary, secondary,
warm, cool, pastel, earth, complementary, analogous. Choose the sketch/idea that is best suited and lends
itself to the concept of a 3-D collage.
Once your idea is “OK’d, you may draw your 3-4 shapes and cut them out on the railroad board. Be sure to
have different sizes of each shape. These will be your “puzzle pieces” that you construct your collage from.
Once all your shapes are cut, you may paint them with a base layer of acrylic paint. You will be using the
colors that you chose as your color scheme. Be sure you have a variety of sizes and shapes using all colors.
When the base coat is dry, paint details in layers, building and creating depth in your painting as you go. Tints
and Shades of your scheme may be mixed and used if desired, but you should be working within the colors of
your chosen scheme***. The use of color, shape and line will help to unify your collage by the repetition and
rhythm created with the collage “puzzle pieces”.
Paint your canvass board with a color that may match or contrast with your painted shapes.
When all painted items are completed and dry, begin thinking about and arranging your puzzle pieces into a
successful composition that demonstrates balance and unity. Overlapping is also a good tool to create unity
within your collage. Larger shapes will most likely be your first layer of the collage, medium sized next, and
the smallest will most likely be the top layer. As you are considering the placement of your puzzle pieces keep
in mind emphasis and balance. Meaning…do you want to create a focal point with the collage or have a very
visually balanced composition?
Be sure your composition is a successful one and begin to glue your collage pieces to your canvass board until
all layers are complete. Use cardboard and corks to build up the pieces.
Collage Art (1900- today) A technique where the artwork is made from an assemblage of different forms,
thus creating a new whole. The word “collage” derives from the French “coller” meaning “glue”.
