The gardens were first created by Ernest Jardine as a
recreational space for factory workers of Kilver
Court in the 1800s. See the historic viaduct built for
the Somerset and Dorset Railway.

for its architecture and notable residents. Look for
the grave of war poet Siegfried Sassoon in the
graveyard of St Andrew’s Church.

Thomas Horner reputedly discovered the deeds to
Mells Manor in a pie given to him to carry to London
by the last Abbot of Glastonbury. This story is referred
to in the popular nursery rhyme Little Jack Horner.

This odd looking contraption was invented in 1873 to pick horse hairs for
weaving. Horsehair weaving is still an important industry in the town.

sound of the river trickling past this historic mill and
garden. Most of the machinery dates from 1888 and is
still used for grinding animal feed and occasionally
whole-wheat flour.

The mill takes its name from John le Gaunt who owned it in 1290. Most of

horsehair weavers in the world. Boyd’s Horsehair
Factory still uses the original looms and techniques

Since the invention of the motorcar it has become difficult to source
horsehair. It is now imported from the Far East where they still use
working horses with cropped tails.

and richest Abbey in England. It is said King Arthur and
Guinevere were buried at the site, and that Joseph of
Arimathea planted the holy thorn nearby.

The Visit Somerset project is supported and funded by all

Somerset Heritage Service works with partners and the
