Last day of school before

Mon. Jan 2
Grade 7 Tree Chipping
and Bottle Drive
I would like to welcome Ms. Cindy Rebiffe to Crescent Park as our new Head Secretary.
Ms. Rebiffe joins us from Rosemary Heights and has been busy familiarizing herself with
our school and getting to know students, staff and parents over the last few weeks.
Please come and say hello when you are in the school. Just a reminder that when you
are in the school, please sign in at the office first before proceeding into other areas of
the school. For morning reading in the primary wing, there is no need to check in at the
office but we ask that you ensure the doors are closed when you leave. Parents are
always welcome and we are just trying to ensure the safety of all of the students and
staff.
With November wrapping up, the busyness of December and winter break will soon be
upon us. As you know from last year, Crescent Park has shifted from reporting to ongoing
communication of student learning. Teachers are either using FreshGrade or a template
to communicate. Teachers that are using the template will be sending home
communication to you on Wednesday, December 14th. Learning Conferences were held
back in October and will occur again in February. Regardless of these formal dates, you
are always welcome to contact staff to discuss your child’s learning.
Over the last month, the school is experiencing a high amount of students arriving late
each day. The average is about 40 students per day. This is highly disruptive to classes
where learning has already begun. Please make it a goal to arrive on time for school.
Thank you.
On Friday, December 16th, we will be having Breakfast with Santa. Students will be
treated to breakfast, sing some songs and maybe see someone in red. Stay tuned for
more specific information over the next week!
A reminder to visit our school website for frequent updates, alerts and parent resources.
This month’s stories included Mat Making, our new gym mural and details about our Early
Learning at the Annex program. The website is updated weekly and can be accessed at:
https://www.surreyschools.ca/schools/crescentpark/Pages/default.aspx
Thank you for your continued support!
Christmas Hampers
This year once again, our school is demonstrating its generosity
by offering Christmas Hampers to some families in Surrey
schools. Information regarding the families your child’s class will
be helping has already been provided. We are asking for
presents and food donations to be at the school by Friday,
December 9th.
COBS BREAD
Crescent Park Elementary has now signed up with Cobs Breads in Ocean Park as part of their Dough Raiser program. This
is a school fundraiser -- when you are buying something at Cobs, tell them you are from Crescent Park and they will set
aside 5% of your purchase total for the school. At the end of the year, we will get that money to spend on the students.
So next time you are doing your regular shopping at Cobs, make sure you mention you're from Crescent Park!
Note: This is for the Ocean Park Cobs location only.
Terry Fox
Flu Season
Way to go Crescent Park Cougars!
It is that time of year – we have some different flu
bugs going around. If kids are sick, we will miss
them, but please keep them home until their
symptoms disappear. When they return they will be
ready for learning.
Kindergarten Registration
Grade 7 Tree Chipping and Bottle Drive
We finally got around to counting all of
the donations for Terry Fox. The final
total was $2235.35!
Children who will turn five years old
before January 1, 2017 are eligible to
begin school in September, 2017.
Registration will begin in January and
we will make sure to communicate
that date as soon as we know.
If you have a garage full of bottles and a tree to get
rid of at the end of December, please consider
donating them to the grade 7 students at Crescent
Park. They will be collecting bottles and trees for
chipping on Monday, January 2nd from 10 am to 2 pm.
Proceeds support their camp field trip and year-end
activities.
Book Fair
The Book Fair was a great success! We sold just under $6685.00 worth of books and school
supplies - $425 more than last year. From the Book Fair we are able to get $937 worth of new
books immediately (not including all the donated books), plus money to buy many more
books and learning supplies such as more games for our library learning commons! Thank you
to everyone who participated!
Congratulations to Elaine Fan who won $25 worth of books for herself and $25 worth of

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR GRADE 6 STUDENT LEADERS
Dear Crescent Park Families,
As part of Grade 6 leadership, we are working towards helping out in the community to build
awareness for those less fortunate. They have decided to do a Community Food Drive. Donations will
be going to Sources White Rock / South Surrey Food Bank. There will be boxes placed in each
classroom for any donations, including food or household items. We know that families are focused on
the Christmas Hampers at this time of year. This food drive is meant to support families at other
times of the year so we will continue collecting until February. Please consider the suggestions
below.

Weather-related closures, class cancellations & delayed openings
In addition to educating children, schools are expected to provide safe, supervised environments. Any
cancellation, closure or delayed school opening has a significant impact on tens of thousands of families. Most
cannot arrange alternate childcare when classes are cancelled or schools are closed unexpectedly.
Consequently, schools will not routinely be closed due to snow or other weather conditions unless there is damage
or other circumstances (e.g., power outage) at a particular school that makes it impossible to operate safely. No
announcement will be made that schools are open; only cancellations, closures or delayed school
openings will be announced.
•
The district supports individual and family decisions regarding safety. Student and staff safety are a
priority of the school district. Parents/guardians have primary responsibility for their children's safe travel
to school and staff members also decide if local conditions may be unsafe. If, for any reason, there are
personal concerns about the ability to travel safely to school, other arrangements should be made. It is
understood some students travel to school on routes that may be challenging on a snow day; therefore,
no student will be penalized for lack of attendance because of such conditions. While schools are
likely to be kept open, the decision to attend is the responsibility of each family. Parents can phone
or email the school to notify staff a student won't be attending. Weather-related student absences will
be excused.
•
Some schools may announce a delayed opening time. The delayed opening time will be announced
on the district website and through the media. The delay would be to allow more time to address potential
issues such as a power outage or staff access to the school.
•
The district will do its best to communicate the status of schools beginning at about
7 a.m., when possible. Weather, power, road and safety conditions can change substantially within a few
hours, therefore assessments and decisions are made early in the morning so the information is more
reliable.
•
Only closures or delayed school openings will be announced, otherwise, schools are open.
Busing
Regular and special needs school bus schedules may face significant changes or cancellation due to weather
conditions. Changes/cancellations will be reported through the district website and news media.
Announcement of closures or delayed openings
In the event of class cancellations or delayed school openings, the Surrey School District will post information on
its website at www.sd36.bc.ca and provide updates to the following radio stations.
CKNW (980 AM)
News 1130 (1130 AM)
CBC Radio (690 AM)
Red-FM (93.1 FM)
Radio India (1600 AM)
Radio Punjab (cable/satellite)
Fairchild Radio (1470 AM)
CHMB (AM 1320)
Class cancellation/delayed opening information may also be broadcast on some local TV station newscasts.
Please do not call the radio stations as staff is very busy receiving updates and preparing newscasts.
Please do not call the schools and district offices. Calling schools and district offices is also impractical since
staff members are generally not available to answer telephone calls far in advance of regular school opening time
and phone lines typically become congested in any event.
Update on B.C.’s New Curriculum from Education Minister Mike Bernier November 29, 2016
Dear Parent,
The world is changing and B.C.’s new curriculum is critical in making sure your child is connected with the
skills he or she needs to succeed in this changing world. We have just announced important updates on
B.C.’s new curriculum – on how it will be implemented in grades 10-12, and on the Foundation Skills
Assessments (FSA) written in grades 4 and 7.
Grade 10-12 curriculum implementation
Teachers, principals and trustees asked for more time to work hands-on with the redesigned draft
curriculum in grades 10-12 – and we agree. The extra time means teachers can try out the draft curriculum
and provide feedback before it is fully implemented in the 2018/19 school year. The new curriculum is
already fully in place in the earlier grades.
The extra year makes sense because the graduation years are more complex than the K-9 years. They are
tied to provincial exams. They are connected to post-secondary choices. We are making sure that we get
the Grade 10-12 redesigned curriculum right for students, ensuring their future success in post-secondary
and the workforce.
When it comes to provincial exams, we have mapped out which old exams and new exams will be written
and when. The most important thing is that new or old, our standards remain high, testing remains
rigorous, and combined with in-class exams we will be thoroughly testing student knowledge. Detailed
exam information can be found at: https://curriculum.gov.bc.ca/graduation-info
Foundation Skills Assessments
Along with our new curriculum, we are enhancing our Foundation Skills Assessment that students in Grades
4 and 7 are required to write under B.C.’s School Act. The FSA measures reading, writing and math
problem-solving skills that students have gained over several years of learning and provides critical
information for parents, for teachers, and for the education system.
Starting next year, students in grades 4 and 7 will complete their FSAs in the fall instead of the spring.
This means you and your child’s teacher will get results earlier – and that means any necessary actions can
be taken sooner. More information on the new FSA can be found at:
https://curriculum.gov.bc.ca/assessment-reporting/new-foundation-skills-assessment
Additionally, we will be giving parents like you a snapshot of the FSA results in broader school reports. You
deserve to know how your child’s school is succeeding on a variety of fronts – and we will include that
information to provide a complete picture.
Together with teachers, our new curriculum is making sure that your child learns the basics of reading, writing
and arithmetic, while also engaging the collaboration, critical thinking and communication skills they’ll need to
succeed in college, university, and the workforce.
Thank you,
Mike Bernier
