School Improvement
On 7.9.16 staff participated in a training session to learn all
about the new online resources as part of the Heinemann
Active Maths programme. Further time was spent discussing
the implementation of this on 14.9.16 along with a continued
focus on introducing the new North Lanarkshire Active
Literacy programme. Everyone was busy planning and organising
Modern Languages Awareness Week. Everyone enjoyed taking
part in our French ‘Partnership with Parents’ Session on 21.9.16
and were impressed at how much French the children have
learned and their fantastic singing! Well done also to the six P5
pupils Aron McLeod, Brogan Beaton, Kyle Grieve, Amy Clift, Mia
Wallace and Josh Futter who took part in the Cathkin Learning
Community French Showcase event on 21.9.16. Along with pupils
from the other Primary Schools in the Learning Community,
they entertained everyone with more French singing!
As one of the Scottish Attainment Challenge schools in SLC,
we have been given the opportunity to have a member of staff
trained as a ‘Leader of Learning’. Miss Harrington has taken
this role on and you will hear more about it in future
newsletters.
Miss Simpson and Mrs Smith have continued to attend Spanish
training sessions and Mrs Barrett and Miss Motherwell have
been enjoying French training.
Miss Simpson, PT, represented the school at the Scottish
Learning Festival to show all of the work being carried out in
relation to the Sunshine Room Nurture Group and strategies to
use across the school.
Mrs Roy took part in the Learning Community Nursery Teacher
Network on 15.9.16 where everyone discussed and shared ideas
for planning and running records to use.
An update on our School Improvement progress will be given
each month in our newsletter!
Nursery Update
The boys and girls have all been enjoying learning through our
focus 'All about Me' and have been exploring our emotions and
our bodies. They have looked at hair and eye colour as well as
exploring our senses touch, taste and hearing. The children
have created portraits of themselves and their families. They
have discussed friendship and created our own friendship
chain, handprints and 'wee me' characters which are displayed
at the Nursery entrance. The children have been exploring
numbers both inside and out with a variety of resources such
as a number hunt with gel numbers and digging for magnetic
numbers. All children have been working hard to practice
writing their name with our name card postbox. The children
have also enjoyed role play within our house corner, making
playdough and exploring the outdoor area.
Everyone all greatly enjoyed learning and performing our
French songs at the French café.
As part of our Eco work, the boys and girls have also been busy
caring for the birds by creating bird cakes and hanging them in
the trees within the school grounds.
Thanks once again to Andy Moffat who visited the Nursery on
5.9.16 to read some exciting stories which everyone enjoyed!
Mrs Murray, Oral Health Nurse, who was in to share a story
about tooth brushing.
Thank you to Zoey Richmond's mum who will be taking over our
lending library which starts on 30.9.16.
This month the Tiny Talking Team have been talking about
‘keeping safe’ in the Nursery. The children were very sensible
and were able to talk about not running away, listening to the
adults, lining up with an adult, and telling an adult if someone
doing something which isn’t safe!
