The 2016/2017 Winter Season in St. Anton am Arlberg
New cable cars inter-link all ski resorts on the Arlberg
making the Arlberg Austria’s largest inter-connected ski resort
The ski season in St. Anton am Arlberg gets off with a bang in December 2016: three new cable car
systems will connect all ski resorts on the Arlberg - turning it into Austria’s largest inter-connected
ski area with a total of 305 kilometres of marked runs and 87 lift and cable car systems. The ArlbergArena then extends from St. Anton in Tyrol to Lech and Zürs, as well as Warth and Schröcken in
Vorarlberg. As one of Austria’s most classic ski resorts, St. Anton attracts winter sports enthusiasts
from all over the world. Away from the regular marked slopes, snow-sport lovers are lured by 200
kilometres of backcountry terrain between the 2,811 metre high Valluga Peak, Schindlerkar and
Valfagehrjoch, the Rendl area and Albonagrat Ridge. St. Anton heralds the start of a winter full of
events with a season-opening extravaganza featuring the music and show talent duo, Rea Garvey
and Gregor Meyle. Events include, for example, the „Ski-Show“, iconic race, „The White Thrill“ and
the „New Orleans meets Snow“ music festival. Furthermore, the Tyrolean „Global Village“ is also a
member of „Best of the Alps“, a consortium of the twelve top ski resorts in the Alps.

„Stanton Ski Open” from 2 to 4 December 2016
Visitors can take advantage of the opportunity to find out why St. Anton am Arlberg is so very special to the
nd
th
skiing world during the great Ski-Test on the season-opening weekend from 2 to 4 December. Guests can
try out the latest models from diverse leading manufacturers throughout the entire ski area for three whole
days - free of charge. This year’s top act is Irish singer and guitarist, Rea Garvey, a multi-award winning
musician and famous coach from „The Voice of Germany“ talent show, who will take to the stage on
rd
Saturday evening (3 December). Special guest Gregor Meyle is also set to attend. Both of these
exceptional musicians can be seen on the open-air stage of the concert grounds, from where they will fire up
the winter-sport loving crowds.
The rise to becoming Austria’s largest inter-connected ski resort
All made possible by the new 1.8 kilometre long Flexenbahn between Stuben/Rauz and Zürs and the two
Trittkopfbahnen lifts. By linking St. Anton with Lech and Zürs as well as Warth und Schröcken, the largest
inter-connected ski resort in Austria has been created. The connection with Arlberg Area results in a
spectacular ski circuit, the „Run of Fame“. Even proficient skiers will need a whole day to ski the 65
kilometres of downhill runs and 18,000 metres in altitude difference from the southernmost point in St.
Anton/Rendl to Warth in the north and back again. Access to the circuit is possible from many different
places; „Run of Fame“ info-points and special signage ensure maximum fun on the slopes.

The 2016/2017 Winter Season in St. Anton am Arlberg
Advent Magic and Christmas Market with Adventure Trail
True Christmas spirit only really becomes apparent during the four weekends before Christmas Eve: Bells
th
will be ringing on the first week of Advent, the 27 November, at „Advent Magic“ in the grounds of St. Anton
Museum. Themed areas invite you to linger and snack on traditional „Kiachla“ along the Christmas
Adventure Trail: visitors can make their own Christmas cards in the photo corner and children enjoy
handicraft sessions at the elves workshops or helping the local baker make Christmas cookies (known as
“Kekse” in Austria). Moreover, locals tell Christmas stories of yesteryear in a quaint log cabin. Additional

Traditional Krampalar” Devil’s Run in Arlberg
Those arriving on the eve of the grand season opening will be able to witness one of the many quaint
traditions in St. Anton am Arlberg. Young lads in terrifying costumes accompany St. Nicholas through the
th
streets of St. Anton on the 5 December 2016: The Krampalar, as they are known as in Arlberg, wear
fearsome carved masks and a so-called Devil’s skin. The Krampus Devil’s Run in St. Anton am Arlberg is a
Tyrolean custom that really has to be seen to be believed.
Tyrol’s only winter via Ferrate: Highlight for ski tour enthusiasts at 2,645 metres
On the rock with your skis strapped to your back: the entrance to the Arlberg winter via Ferrate - the only one
of its kind in Tyrol - can be found at 2,645 metres above sea level near the top terminal of the Riffel II chairlift
in the Rendl region, high above St. Anton. A steel cable runs through this entire ridge traverse route, which is
particularly appreciated by ski touring enthusiasts for its scenic beauty: weather permitting, views extend
over the entire Verwallgruppe Mountain Range and Lechtal Alps - sometimes even as far as South Tyrol.
After the climb, skiers can enjoy a fabulous downhill run through open terrain. In addition to skis or a
snowboard for the downhill run to the valley, climbing equipment with a belt, carabiner and touring boots are
absolutely necessary. Professional accompaniment is recommended for this tour, with a guide from one of
the local ski schools.
Festive end to the year: Concert by the Wiltener Boys Choir
Pause for a moment to reminisce on the happenings of the past year. The Wiltener Boys Choir Christmas
th
Concert on 28 December 2016 in the great Arlbergsaal Hall of St. Anton (20 hrs) provides the perfect
setting to do just. With around 160 members, this choir is one of the oldest and most traditional boys’ choirs
th
in the Alps. Its history dates back to the 13 Century and they share many historic links with their
“colleagues” in the Vienna Boys Choir
Ski Show „Schneetreiben – Driving Snow“ – A journey through time with firework display
The slope in front of the Karl Schranz Stadium in St. Anton am Arlberg is transformed into an überdimensional screen every Wednesday evening. Giant images projected onto the slope with brilliant 3D
effects and a firework display create an extraordinary stage for 150 actors to demonstrate the historical
th
developments of skiing in an impressive time-lapse performance. The premiere takes place on 30
December 2016, after which the 45 minute „Schneetreiben“ ski show will be performed every Wednesday at
th
21 hrs from 4 January onwards. The show is hosted by St. Anton am Arlberg Tourist Board, together with
the Arlberger Bergbahnen Cable Car Co and Skischule Arlberg; admission is free.
rd
Arlberg New Year’s Concert on 3 January 2017
St. Anton starts the New Year in classic style: The traditional, annual Arlberg New Year’s Concert takes
rd
place on 3 January at 17.30 hrs in the World Cup Hall at ARLBERG-well.com. Conducted by Prof. Dr.
Rudolf Streicher, President of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and honorary citizen of St. Anton, the
musicians of the Vienna Ambassade Orchestra promise a fine performance.

The ladies will be in the spotlight again from the 7 to 28 January 2017, when it is time again for „Ladies

New Orleans meets Snow from 7 to 9 April 2017
The focus will be on soul, blues, funk and jazz in this Tyrolean holiday resort in April: With live concerts in the
village streets and ski slopes of St. Anton, musicians and diverse bands will be adding a healthy dose of
th
th
southern flair from 7 to 9 April. The „New Orleans meets Snow“ Festival has enticed the Austrian jazz elite
to Arlberg for a fourth time in succession now. The highlight of this year’s line-up will be the „Blues Night“
again on Saturday evening, with the Markus Linder Blues Band and a star guest from New Orleans.

The 2016/2017 Winter Season in St. Anton am Arlberg
nd
The iconic ski race for top skiers: „The White Thrill“ on 22 April 2017
Extreme winter sport competition: The mass start from the Valluga Ridge attracts thousands of winter sports
enthusiasts from all over the world every year to St. Anton am Arlberg. The „White Thrill“ is one of the
toughest ski races in the world in which more or less anyone can participate, although many know from
experience: This nine kilometre long race is not suitable for everyone. The mass start with 555 contestants,
pitfalls of the bumpy Kandahar-Piste and a 150 metre interim ascent take even the ski pros to their limits.
Freeride Safety Training How to handle a transceiver, probe and snow shovel
Searching an avalanche area, using probes, digging... quick and efficient use of an avalanche transceiver
(avalanche rescue device) is absolutely imperative in the case of an emergency – as is the speed at which
one reacts. With this in mind, the Arlberger Bergbahnen Cable Cars have teamed up with Ortovox to create a
Freeride Safety Training Ground on the Rendl. Near the Salzböden area, ski tourers and freeriders can take
free advantage of this training area with five buried transmitters. St. Anton holidaymakers can also find out
about the current avalanche danger levels at three so-called Freeride Checkpoints at Galzig, Gampen and
Rendl; equipped with detailed explanations, weather conditions, backcountry rules and additional
information.
Horizontal and vertical: Sports and „arl.rock“ Climbing Centre
Tennis, volleyball, squash, bowling, climbing, bouldering: Sports lovers can also train in winter at the Sport
and Climbing Centre „arl.rock“ in St. Anton am Arlberg. Highlights, in the truest sense of the word, include
the many climbing possibilities: up to 30 diverse outdoor routes in varying levels of difficulty, 80 square
metres of indoor bouldering facilities and 70 climbing routes in grades 3 to 9 are all waiting to be conquered.
Little snowmen having big fun – children can use the lifts for Euro 10 per season
Children born from 2009 only pay 10 Euros for the “Snowman Card” season lift pass, enabling them to take
advantage of all the slopes St. Anton has to offer, all winter long for a tiny price.
Toques in the Snow World Class Cuisine
Five St. Anton restaurants have again been recognized by Gault Millau: The Tannenhof (3 toques), Raffl´s
St. Antoner Hof (2 toques), the Hospiz Alm in St. Christoph am Arlberg(2 toques), the Stube at the Hotel Alte
Post (1 toque) as well as the Verwallstube at Galzig - which received an impressive second toque. This
famous Tyroloean ski resort can now boast of an incredible ten toques and 77 Gault Millau points.
Leave your car at home and save the environment
St. Anton am Arlberg’s railway station is right in the centre of town and all main international express trains
stop here. Skiers, in fact, don’t actually need a car in the entire holiday region: Regular shuttle buses operate
between the villages of St. Anton as well as throughout the entire holiday region. Those staying directly in St.
Anton am Arlberg can make the most of the convenient location and access everything on foot.

Austria’s largest inter-connected ski resort
with over 300 kilometres of marked runs
New Ski Network at the Arlberg
Ski lovers have a mini sensation to look forward to in St. Anton am Arlberg as from the
2016/17 winter season: Two of the world's most famous ski resorts have become one.
Previously only connected by road, new cable car systems now make the villages of Lech,
Zürs, Schröcken and Warth accessible by ski or snowboard. Austria’s largest interconnected ski area has been created with 87 lift and cable car systems and 305 kilometres
of marked runs. This convenient freedom of movement eases the traffic situation in the
surrounding villages and helps preserve the environment. The winter sports region now
boasts of shorter journey times and 120 fewer bus services a day between Zürs, Stuben
and Alpe Rauz.

tour encompasses the entire ski area, from the southernmost
point in St. Anton/Rendl to Warth in the north, with 65
kilometres of downhill runs and 18,000 metres in altitude
difference. Alpe Rauz base terminal is Arlberg’s new hub,
where two new Flexen- and Albonabahn II lift systems will
open. Thanks to info-points and signposts, the circuit can be
accessed from almost anywhere. “Run of Fame” stars will
also remind skiers of Arlberg’s greatest ski legends, such as
Hannes Schneider, Karl Schranz and Mario Matt, to whom the route is dedicated.

20 Years of “The White Thrill”: Iconic Ski Race in St. Anton am Arlberg/Tyrol
The Anniversary of Insanity
It is the final day of the ski season in St. Anton
am Arlberg. The sight of colourful ski racing
suits animates the landscape and the air is
electric with tension. The winter sports
enthusiasts seem jittery, but shrug their
nervousness off with a smile and a joke. The
lifts finally close in the afternoon - and “The
White Thrill” breaks loose. The legendary, if not
most legendary race in the Alpine region
celebrates its 20th anniversary on 22nd April
2017. After the mass start at the Vallugagrat, 555
international skiers, snowboarders and telemark
enthusiasts
hurtle
simultaneously
down
unprepared slopes to the valley. The fastest cross the finishing line in just under eight minutes,
although anyone who makes the finishing line of this crazy extravaganza can quite justifiably
be described as a winner. One or the other participant may lose a ski pole along the way - but
never their sense of fun. Photo: In start position on the Valluga Ridge - 555 winter sports enthusiasts

Arlberg Tourist Board/photographer Josef Mallaun
“The White Thrill” attracts thousands of eager spectators every year to the season’s finale on the
Arlberg. Anyone can take part - although even proficient skiers are taken to their absolute limits, when
several hundred daring skiers launch simultaneously from the formidable “Valluga” ridge and hurtle
down to the valley in St. Anton. Valuable seconds can be won by finding the right position at the mass
start-line, before the interim ascent on the so-called “Schmerzensberg - Pain Mountain” sets racers’
lungs on fire.
Times of between eleven and 18 minutes are a
very respectable average for the nine kilometre
long course with 1,300 metres in altitude
difference. Germany’s Florian Holzinger set the
“insane” record time of seven minutes and 40.6
seconds back in 2012. A tempting benchmark that
record hunters will undoubtedly be seeking to beat
at the 20th anniversary of this iconic race. Those
who prefer to take a more leisurely pace can join
the flamboyantly dressed participants who tend to
bring up the rear, and are cheered enthusiastically
over the finishing line around half an hour after the
rest. “The White Thrill” begins on 22nd April 2017
at 17 hrs on the Vallugagrat Ridge, high above St. Anton am Arlberg. Plucky children aged eleven to
16 years start their “Mini White Thrill” a little earlier at 16.30 hrs above the Senn Hut.
Photo: It is taking part that counts – participants must contend with the challenges presented by
unprepared slopes during the “White Thrill“ in St. Anton am Arlberg. Picture courtesy of: St. Anton am
Arlberg Tourist Board/photographer Josef Mallaun
By the way: “The White Thrill“ is one of the ”Arlberg Adler“ alpine triathlon disciplines. Whoever
plans to hold the coveted winner’s trophy aloft in late summer 2017, must also prove their powers of
endurance at the ”Arlberg Jakobilauf” half marathon on 22nd July and Arlberger Bike Marathon on the
19th August., Less arduous conditions apply for the “Arlberg Marmot” competition, held on the same
three days as the “Arlberg Adler”.

St. Anton am Arlberg: “Snowman” ticket for children under the age of 8 years
Little price for little skiers
All season long for just 10 euros - Arlberg offers the best
deal for the youngest skiers again this year. Children up
to the age of 8 years (born in 2009 or later) can use the
entire Ski Arlberg winter sports area with 305 kilometres

Despite its many challenging runs, the region around St.
Anton is also geared up for younger skiers: 113
kilometres of blue slopes, designated nursery slopes and
specially designed lifts for children with a minimum
height of 90 centimetres are ready and waiting for the ski
legends of the future. Youngsters can learn how to take
their first few turns in the snow under professional

St. Anton am Arlberg: Tyrol’s only winter via Ferrate
To where no lift leads
Get off the lift and strap your skis to
your back? Only those intending to
tackle the winter via ferrate will come up
with such an idea. The entrance is just
above the top terminal of the RiffelbahnII lifts at 2,645 metres above sea level.
Ski-touring fans can start the 850-metre
long high alpine ridge crossing from
here, secured in its entirety by steel
rope. Weather permitting, views extend
over the entire Verwallgruppe Mountain
Range and Lechtal Alps - sometimes
even as far as South Tyrol. The heart of
every ski enthusiast will skip a beat
once they arrive at the Rossfallscharte Ridge (2,732 metres), where the downhill run through
backcountry terrain through the Montafon Valley to Pettneu, or via Moostal to St. Anton
beckons. In addition to skis or a snowboard, climbing equipment with a belt, carabiner and
touring boots are absolutely necessary for this tour. Those who do not have a ski pass pay
€ 17.50 for an ascent with the Rendlbahn lift to the via Ferrate. Those who prefer
professional accompaniment as part of a guided tour, can book a guide from one of the St.
Anton am Arlberg ski schools. www.stantonamarlberg.com

St. Anton am Arlberg in Gault-Millau 2017
The peak of mountain dining
Bouillabaisse on the mountain, or sumpturous
creations by international celebrity chefs - the
culinary offerings from St. Anton am Arlberg are

„Food has never been so good in St. Anton“, ruled editors of the Gault-Millau Guide in 2016 in reference
to the restaurant in Hotel Tannenhof, to whom they awarded again an impressive 18 points and 3 toques
for their “creative alpine” cuisine. Those who appreciate fine wines should also stop by at the HospizAlm St. Christop right next to the slopes, for Adi Werner’s top class collection of wines. His famous wine
cellar holds precious rarities, including around 2,900 large-format bottles (holding up to 18 litres) of
valuable Bordeaux wines – one of the world’s most impressive collections.
The Verwallstube on Mount Galzig presents an interesting counterpart to classic ski hut fare. Once
there, skiers can savour culinary specialities and fine wines right next to the slopes, at elegantly set
tables. Awarded with 15 points and two toques, this gourmet restaurant is well known far beyond the
borders of Tyrol for its seafood creations. One particular favourite is the Bouillabaisse with garlic bread
and aioli.

In the heart of St Anton am Arlberg:
A leisure oasis with indoor swimming pool and park
Extending over more than 30,000 square metres, the
recreation area includes a small lake and fountain,
footpaths which lead through the park-like gardens,
benches and peaceful zones as well as a lovingly

The historic railway station building is still a reminder of
earlier times – although today it is a private house. Apart
from this one can hardly imagine that, before the Alpine Ski
World Championships in 2001, railway lines ran through
this architect-designed landscape.
The luxuriously appointed leisure and wellness area of the ARLBERG-well.com includes a swimming
complex with indoor and outdoor pools, whirl and massage bath, waterfall and children's paddling pools.
In addition, there is a Fitness Centre and an extensive sauna suite with Finnish, Kelo and Infrared
saunas, Sanarium, steam bath and relaxation lounge.
The principal point of this intelligently invested building with ultramodern technology is the 2,000 square
metre hall where a range of activities for up to 3,000 people can take place. High-calibre sporting events
as well as cultural events (including the famous Arlberger New Year's Concert), presentations and
international congresses can be seen here.
In the winter the extensive park next to the ARLBERG-well.com is usually covered with snow and the
footpaths are regularly cleared. Fairy lights glitter from the trees, the frozen water sparkles in the lake
and the groomed ice rink for skating and curling can be found nearby.

Nomen est omen – or “True to its name”. The extravagant architecture is reminiscent of a giant rock and
draws one’s attention to the sporting showpiece of the sports centre: with a total climbing area of 1,000
square metres, around 100 different climbing routes in varying levels of difficulty await – 30 of which are
outdoors. Those who prefer it a little less steep can choose from one of the two via Ferrate routes, which
both lead to the 18 metre high tower in the outdoor area.
Inside
Climbers can look forward to an 80 square metre bouldering area and around 70 climbing routes in varied
levels of difficulty ranging from 3 to 9. There are plenty of alternatives for guests who prefer to keep their
feet on terra firma: thanks to a special floor coating, the two tennis courts can be used as basketball,
volleyball, table tennis or badminton courts. Squash players have their own designated court and there
are extra facilities for bowling enthusiasts with four modern lanes.
Those wanting to enjoy a meal in stylish lounge ambience, or just watch all the goings on in the sports

An insider tip at St. Anton am Arlberg
The multi-faceted Verwall Valley
Hikers and Alpine enthusiasts can “escape” in only a
few minutes from the centre of St. Anton am Arlberg
and venture into the picturesque Verwall Valley to get
away from it all. Regardless of whether you want to
discover this natural recreational area by mountain
bike, snuggled under a blanket while enjoying a sleigh
ride through the snow-covered valley or on a stroll
along the banks of Lake Verwall – this valley is the
perfect getaway in both summer and winter for the
whole family, for thrill seekers and those looking for
the essential pleasures of rest and relaxation.

Approximately 300 kilometres of hiking trails sprawl around St. Anton am Arlberg at an altitude of 1,300
metres above sea level. One particularly attractive route leads through the Verwall Valley. Past lush
meadows, sections of forest offering welcome shade and small streams – the trail around Lake Verwall is
flat and easy to negotiate, even when using a pram. Young climbing fans especially will enjoy making a
stop at the high and low rope course, with 16 or eight varied stations. At this nature trail both adults and
children can hang from the trees like Tarzan and Jane, at either six metres or two metres above the
ground. There is a children’s play area with a fireplace next to the water’s edge - where unlimited fun and
delicious barbeques can be enjoyed. Parents have peace of mind too – safe in the knowledge that the
Verwall Valley is closed to motor traffic. Another beautiful barbeque and picnic area is also located next
to the Rasthaus Verwall.
Verwalltal-Valley is a true insider’s tip – especially in autumn, when the last days of sunshine lure visitors
to these richly colourful natural landscapes – or in winter too, when virgin tracks are laid by the first cross
country skiers or snowshoe walkers. Those drawn to the depths of the valley in the summer months can
plan varied tours including overnight stays in mountain huts.
A gravel trail leads up to the Konstanzer Hut, which entices
guests with delicious Tyrolean specialities. Keep on walking
until you reach Schönverwall and the Heilbronner Hut,
where weary travellers can expect quaint dormitory
accommodation or multi-bed rooms. The route along the
well secured trail from St. Anton, through the Rosanna
Gorge and on to the Verwall Valley and Konstanzer Hut with
views of the mighty Patteriol, is another particularly
impressive hiking experience.

St Anton am Arlberg is a holiday region with a world-wide reputation, and rightfully so. A
superlative winter sports area with excellent guest services, Ferris wheel cable car, the
ARLBERG well.com wellness centre, the finest gourmet cuisine, an excellent walking area, the
multi-functional sports centre arl.rock and numerous events which all contribute towards an
unforgettable vacation.
The Tyrolean mountain village, with its 2470 inhabitants, together with the neighbouring villages of
Pettneu, Flirsch and Strengen, fulfils the highest demands and yet still retains much of its originality and
traditional charm. Holiday-makers in St Anton am Arlberg treasure the alpine cosiness at 1300 metres
altitude as much as the hospitality and international orientation. A mountain village, traditional and
modern at the same time, with the scenery of a gigantic summit world and the amenities of a worldly
holiday resort.
Winter - greater than ever and traditional
When the new cable car systems open in December 2016 - all ski resorts on the Arlberg will be
connected, turning it into Austria’s largest inter-linked ski area with a total of 305 kilometres of marked
runs and 87 lift and cable car systems The Arlberg-Arena then extends from St. Anton in Tyrol to Lech
and Zürs, as well as Warth and Schröcken in Vorarlberg. St. Anton am Arlberg thus offers unparalleled
conditions for a deluxe winter sports holiday. Those wanting to find out which slope offers the perfect
conditions should avail themselves of the services of the local guides. Not only do skiers come into their
own in St Anton am Arlberg, cross country skiers are lured by a Loipe network of approximately 40
kilometres. Toboggan runs in St Anton am Arlberg, Schnann, Flirsch, as well as ice rinks for skating and
curling, provide for additional sporting alternatives. The multi-functional sports centre arl.rock makes
numerous indoor activities and diverse kinds of indoor ball games possible as well as climbing and
bouldering, including a Via Ferrata climbing route leading to the roof. Rather more comfortable is a
romantic ride in a horse-drawn sleigh through the fairytale snow-covered mountain world. From morning
until evening the ARLBERG-well.com in St Anton am Arlberg as well as the Wellnesspark Arlberg
Stanzertal in Pettneu invite you to enjoy relaxing hours in their lavishly arranged wellness areas. What
makes a holiday in St Anton am Arlberg so special is, not least the unique combination of almost
boundless skiing pleasure and après ski together with a variety of gastronomic choices, from Tyrolean
delicacies up to the distinguished international top cuisine.
The Summer – mountain delights with cult status
The cradle of alpine skiing is also inspiring in the summer. Walkers, mountain and rock climbers will find
a large selection of routes, from easily accessible up to high-alpine. 300 kilometres of marked walking
paths, awarded with the Tirol Walking Stamp of Quality, offer fresh possibilities every day to experience
the wide-ranging mountain world of the Arlberg. Mountain bikers have over 200 kilometres of tracks and
numerous tour variants. In addition, the sloping nine-hole golf course in the Nasserein district is a
challenge for even experienced golfers. Families can enjoy gentle experiences on the adventure walks,
which appeal to all the senses. The extended WunderWanderWeg - Wonder Walking Trail now leads
from Lake Maiensee (above St. Christoph) to the Senn Hut and introduces walkers to alpine nature.
Guests can stretch out and simply allow themselves to be spoiled at the leisure and wellness areas of
the ARLBERG- well.com or in the Wellnesspark Arlberg Stanzertal in Pettneu. Those who would like to
clamber happily amongst the trees and swing from tree to tree like Tarzan and Jane, will find the correct
location in the high and low wire garden in Verwall. Numerous events from mid-June to mid-September
provide holidaymakers with the opportunity to become acquainted with local tradition and customs, with
village, music and alpine festivals as well as holy mass on the mountain and the “Almabtrieb” cattle drive.
The ARLBERG Giro, an International Film Festival and the Mountain Yoga Festival round off the summer

Winter 2016/2017
QUESTIONS TO A WINTER SPORTS RESORT –
WINTER 2016/2017
How many lifts are there in operation? Do you have to queue? Are the ski huts cosy? What about the
skiing courses? These are typical of the questions that holiday-makers and potential visitors want to ask
before they come. St. Anton am Arlberg Tourist Office provides the answers:
1. SKIING SLOPES

How long are the ski runs?
The St. Anton am Arlberg skiing region has 305 km marked ski runs and 200 km off-piste options.

How carefully are the pistes groomed?
Drivers and their 29 tracked vehicles and snow-grooming attachments are out on the slopes for
about eight hours every night - and in the morning hours when conditions require additional
grooming.

Is artificial snow equipment used in adverse weather conditions?
158 snow cannons and 109 snow “lances” have been installed in the St. Anton am Arlberg skiing
area to ensure dependable skiing conditions on the following runs: Galzig - Zammermoos - St. Anton,
Galzig Plateau, Osthangeinfahrt, Galzig – St. Christoph, Gampen - Zammermoos, Gampen –
Standard, Kapall – Gampen – St. Anton, Arlenmähder, Steissbachtal, Fang - Nasserein, Rendl top
station - St. Anton, Rendl – Gampberg, Rendl – Maass, Rendl – Riffel I (total of some 90 km). In total
87 % of the piste area in St. Anton/St. Christoph can be covered by man-made snow. Slopes
exposed to the sun also have additional snow layers applied. The expense of making snow could be
strongly reduced. The reason for this is the large quantity of snow meltwaters which drain away from
the gigantic reservoir of the St. Antoner power station into the Rosanna river. There the river water is
pumped out directly to the snow cannons and snow lances in the skiing area. At optimal
temperatures they can create an up to 50 centimetres thick snow layer on the slopes – all within 100
hours.

Does the artificial snow equipment comply with conservation requirements?
St. Anton am Arlberg’s artificial snow equipment complies with the applicable nature conservation
requirements and regulations. The “artificial” snow consists exclusively of drinking water and fresh
air. By covering the meadows with artificial snow the grasses and roots are protected from damage
and frost. The agriculture promotes mechanical snow making for the protection of the vegetation, not
a disadvantage either is the later snow melt as it reduces the spring dryness effect.
2. LIFTS

How many lifts are there, and what is their capacity?
The Arlberg Ski Pass is valid on 87 mountain railways and ski lifts in the skiing areas of St. Anton, St.
Christoph, Stuben, Pettneu, Lech, Warth-Schröcken, Zürs and Klösterle (Sonnenkopf). The transport
capacity is 157.940 persons per hour.

How are the ticket checking procedures?
The ARLBERG CARD, an electronic and remote ski pass enables easier and faster access to all lifts
and cable cars. Data are read out from the chip card via radio signal. And by the way: Lift passes
can also be easily purchased in numerous accommodations.
2
Questions to a Winter Sports Resort - Winter 2016/2017

Winter 2016/2017
Modern, international and vibrant: structural changes underline
the cosmopolitan culture of St Anton am Arlberg
New standards for alpine architecture
Without question, the international village of St Anton am Arlberg is modern and vibrant but, at
the same time, has retained its traditional Tyrolean charm. The structural changes of the past
years underline the cosmopolitan culture of the holiday region as well as its aspirations for
quality. In recent times, the new buildings have set significant benchmarks and blend in stylishly
with the village.
A sensation in the winter season 2006/2007 was the introduction of the new Galzig Cable Car, a
mountain railway with big wheel technology. The Arlberger Bergbahnen invested 22 million euros in the
spectacular building and the ground-breaking technology is a visual attraction by the renowned Austrian
architect, Georg Driendl. The base station is fully glazed and thereby provides a clear view of the four
ferris wheels.
Since the winter season 2009/2010, one can reach the Rendl skiing area with the modern Rendl Lift. The
transparent base station building is much closer to the village centre in St. Anton am Arlberg and was
also designed by the architect, Georg Driendl. Where the winter sportsmen needed to take a bus in
former times from the skiing area at the Galzig in order to reach the old Rendl Lift, today it is only a few
steps in ski boots. The eight person gondola with heated seats can carry up to 2,000 persons per hour,
and has a journey time of only seven and a half minutes.
The eye-catching, extravagant architecture of the multi-functional sport and climbing centre, arl.rock, with
its 18 metre high tower, showcases the highlights of the sports centre: climbing and bouldering – the
arl.rock offers up to 100 different indoor and outdoor climbing routes with diverse degrees of difficulty and,
in addition, a modern Via Ferrata climbing-route leads to the roof of the activity centre. Thanks to a
flexible special floor in the sports hall, numerous activities can be offered: basketball, volleyball, table
tennis or badminton can be played on the two tennis courts and squash players have their own court. Fun
can be had on four bowling lanes.
In addition, during the course of the various structural changes, the face of the Tyrolean mountain village
has been permanently transformed. The various landmarks underline the lively culture of the international
ski resort, which have set completely new standards for alpine architecture: clear functionality, which
strikes up a gentle symbiosis with the landscape. However, the buildings do not appear as futuristic
counterpoints set amongst traditional surroundings; on the contrary they affirm the connection to the
modern trend, by symbolizing development and progress in the alpine area. "Traditionally we are modern,
open-minded and vibrant", says Director of Tourism, Martin Ebster "and this expresses exactly the new
face of St Anton am Arlberg".
Particular attention has been given to the new railway station, which the architects Gerhard Manzl,
Johann Ritsch and Manfred Sandner have set in a fine-mesh, high-grade steel material. The building
nestles next to the rails and displays the continual slowing down and acceleration of the incoming and
outgoing trains. The station buildings, embankment and noise barrier together form a flat frontage and a
light and transparent working footbridge leads to the village from the forecourt.
2
New standards for alpine architecture
On the opposite slope the trio of architects have, to a certain extent, allowed the Finish Stadium to grow
out of the mountain. The Finish Arena is intended to be a part of the landscape, whereby the new
construction and the existing scenery blend into one another. Among experts the stadium stands as a
prime example of exemplary building in the Alps.
The architects Helmut Dietrich and Much Untertrifaller have also achieved a great integration success
with the building of the events and congress centre, ARLBERG well.com: half of the 48,000 cubic meters
of the large hall is hidden within the slope, into which the grassed flat roof blends smoothly. The five long,
narrow roof sections allow the viewer to think of hay sheds on a meadow slope and make the roof an
altogether exciting landscape. The interior, with the three main halls, restaurant and swimming pool, as
well as a wellness suite, is captivating with its generosity and restrained elegance. The principal functions
of this hospitality building stand clearly in the foreground of this ultramodern establishment, which is used
for large cultural and sporting exhibitions, as well as congresses, meetings and company events.
Even on a smaller scale, St. Anton am Arlberg is a wonderful example of pioneering architecture and is
already a role model for many private building projects in the Tyrolean mountains, representing the dawn
of a new era in Alpine chic: Not only has the base station of the Rendl lifts been constructed using lots of
glass, new hotels are also using adopting a sleek design with wood and glass facades that permit
extensive views of the beautiful mountains. Thanks to the large windows, guests enjoy a lasting
impression of ‘lightness’. Light, which constantly changes during the course of the day, is reflected by the
sun drenched mountains into the hotel rooms, where it can spread unhindered. There is, of course, no
shortage in the use of timber which is still utilized extensively in the architecture – tradition and modernity
go hand in hand at St. Anton am Arlberg.
St Anton am Arlberg continues to be faithful to tradition, but this Tyrolean mountain village is anything but
provincial. One dares to forge new avenues here – because: "Our guests look for authenticity and
vibrancy and that is exactly what a “museum village” of yesteryear cannot offer" explains Director of
Tourism, Martin Ebster. "We move with the times and attract both lovers of tradition, as well as the urbanmodern target group".

Winter 2016/2017
St. Anton am Arlberg: From humble origins to an internationally renowned ski resort
Blending established ski tradition with contemporary service
It all started in 1880 at St. Anton am Arlberg. A Norwegian engineer
strapped two planks of wood to his feet and „slid“ to work at the
Arlberg Tunnel. At that time this little village at 1,300 metres above
sea level was light years away from the world famous ski resort it has
now become. Back then, the isolated mountain farming folk struggled
under incredibly harsh conditions. Photo: Hannes Schneider and his ski
tracks – Picture from the Museum St. Anton am Arlberg; copyright: TVB St.
Anton am Arlberg
Times changed rapidly, though, in St. Anton am Arlberg. All of a sudden it
wasn’t only Nordic guests conquering the pistes with their telemark turns –
the locals were too.
The Beginning – Founding of the Ski-Club Arlberg
The story began on the 3rd January 1901.Six friends walked from St.
Anton am Arlberg to St. Christoph and were welcomed on their arrival by
the innkeeper, Oswald Trojer and his daughter, Liesl. This meeting started
with companionable drinks and ended with the foundation of the Ski-Club
Arlberg. Today, the Ski-Club can boast of over 8,000 members from 61 different countries. Only three
years after founding the club, they realised their next vision by hosting the 1st „General Ski Race“. The
great racing tradition of today can trace its` roots back to this first competition in 1904.
First ski school worldwide
This was just the beginning, however, for the dynamic St. Antoner’s with their Ski Club and spectacular
races. A local man, Hannes Schneider, was responsible for creating a landmark in ski history, by
“inventing” the first ski school ever in the winter of 1921/1922. Until that point in time, no ski resort offered
holiday makers the opportunity for group tuition according to ability and instruction using specified
guidelines. Hannes Schneider was considered to be a ski hero after winning his first race at the tender
age of 13. He skied in a particularly individual style and was the first to use a crouched position for
downhill runs – which is still recognised today as the fastest and safest position. He also developed an
entirely new turning technique – by transferring his weight on the skis to change course.
One of the first cable cars in the Alps
Local tourism was given an incredible boost, as increasing numbers of guests arrived wanting to learn
Hannes Schneider’s technique. It was now “in” to visit the mountains in winter and especially learn to ski.
As the expectations of the visiting alpine enthusiasts grew, so did St. Anton and in 1937 one of the very
first cable cars in the Alps was built. The Galzigbahn at St. Anton am Arlberg, enabling 210 persons per
hour to access the heart of the ski region.
Fast forward - 130 years later
Today St. Anton am Arlberg is an international holiday resort with 97 lift systems, 350 kilometres of
marked pistes and 200 kilometres for free riders in the entire Arlberg region. Around 1,000 hotels,
pensions and holiday apartments, innovative customer service, cable car with giant Ferris wheel,
wellness centre, multi-functional sport centre, gourmet cuisine, excellent summer walking and cycling
region as well as a wide range of diverse events are the perfect ingredients for a great holiday. It is a
remarkable accomplishment of the tourism organisers in St. Anton that they have managed to
harmoniously combine years of tradition and history with the requirements of an international ski resort,
whilst preserving the village’s original charm. Furthermore, St. Anton am Arlberg is a member of „Best of
the Alps“ – a merger of the 12 most traditional Alpine resorts in Europe.
2
Blending established ski tradition with contemporary service
Ski World Championships 2001 and new cable car technology
A hightlight in recent history was the Alpine Ski World Championships 2001, which finally introduced St.
Anton am Arlberg to the rest of the world. Structural changes made in preparation for the World
Championships underline the cosmopolitan culture of this holiday region as well as acknowledging the
necessity for top quality. With this in mind, two new lift systems have been constructed in St. Anton am
Arlberg: the Galzig-Bahn, completed in 2006 and the Rendl-Bahn, repositioned closer to the village centre
in 2009. Gone are the days of laboriously walking upstairs to the lifts, or having to take the bus to the old
Rendl-Bahn to access the slopes at Galzig. Both lifts have been moved closer together during
construction of the new Rendl-Bahn and are ground breaking examples of modern architecture and
innovative technology.
Multifunctional Sport Centre arl.rock
In the 19th century, guests and locals alike were at the mercy of the elements whilst indulging in their
sporting activities. Nowadays, there is no reason for bad weather to spoil your holiday in St. Anton am
Arlberg. Thanks to the multifunctional Sport and Climbing Centre arl.rock, the choice of sports on offer is
wide ranging and not influenced at all by adverse weather conditions. Choose from: tennis, volleyball,
squash, bowling, climbing and bouldering. A Lounge-Restaurant with spectacular views provides
spectators with the ideal surroundings to chill out and enjoy.
Interski-Congress 2011
The Interski Congress at St. Anton am Arlberg in January 2011 provided us with a glimpse into the future
development of winter sports (like the first time in 1991). Attracting more than 2,000 participants from all
over the world, this event is one of the most important meetings of the international ski scene. Here the
latest trends and developments in winter sports are analysed and new techniques presented. In 2011 ski
instructors, teachers, sport scientists, medical professionals and other specialists discussed, amongst
other things, the future of winter sports.
The Circle Closes
The common tariff system at Ski Arlberg has been in place for many years, although the connection
between Tyrolean St. Anton and Zürs in Vorarlberg was previously only possible by car or ski bus. When
the new connecting cable car systems open in the 2016/17 winter season, all ski resorts on the Arlberg
will be connected - turning it into Austria’s largest inter-linked ski area with a total of 305 kilometres of
marked runs and 87 lift and cable car systems. Winter sports enthusiasts will then be able to explore the
entire Arlberg Arena: slip into their skis in St. Anton first thing in the morning, before heading to the sundrenched slopes of Lech and Zürs, then over to Warth and Schröcken, before rounding the day off with
the legendary “White Thrill” run back to St. Anton late afternoon. The full dimensions of this inter-linked
ski region can be best experienced along the “Run of Fame”: With 65 kilometres of runs and 18,000
metres in altitude difference, this new ski circuit leads through the entire Arlberg ski area.
From yesterday to today
St. Anton am Arlberg has never forgotten its history – a visit to the Museum St. Anton am Arlberg is proof
of that. Guests can discover all sorts of fascinating information on days gone by at Arlberg in this
museum. The history of the region and skiing as well as the cultural development and traditions are on
display, spread over a series of rooms and on individual stations. Also, find out about the unique and
unbelievable story of the Brotherhood of St. Christoph am Arlberg, which began many, many years ago.
In 1386 Heinrich Findelkind (also known as Heinrich von Kempten) founded the Brotherhood in order to
collect money to build a hospice on the Arlbergpass as a shelter for travelers who had fallen on hard
times. With more than 18,000 members today, this „Association of Christian Charity“ is the largest purely
charitable organisation in the world. Past and present – side by side in St. Anton am Arlberg.
