The Celebration of Sacraments Dear People of God, As I tend to

Dear People of God,
As I tend to write these articles weeks ahead of time they often miss out on opportunities to direct our attention to
topical issues of the day. So, while this is coming some weeks following the Supreme Court decision in the
matter of Obergefell vs Hodges, allow me to offer some insights into the Church’s position regarding the court’s
redefinition of marriage. First, I want to make it clear that marriage is not and really cannot be defined by a
legislature or a court since its very identity was handed down to us from ancient times not only by our own
Western European culture, but by that of every society and culture which has ever developed among civilized
people. The purpose of marriage is not to assure social security benefits [that can be handled in a myriad of
ways] or to recognize who loves who [that is handled in a variety of ways as well] but to regulate the orderly
succession of society by bringing together those of an age to enjoy ordinary human intercourse and thereby
provide replacements for older men and women. As such, marriage has been and remains between a man and a
woman for the purpose of the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of their offspring. The good
of the spouses certainly embraces many of the ‘things’ same sex couples want, e.g., insurance, inheritance,
benefits, the right to an expensive divorce lawyer, etc. However, the second part of that ‘definition’ goes far
beyond the couple to take into consideration all of society, today and into the future. Certainly same sex couples
can raise, educate and otherwise ‘parent’ children, but they cannot on their own undertake the ordinary human
function by which those children are brought into being so cannot be truly married regardless of what some court
or legislature might have to say. This is important because in what Francis called an anthropocentric society such
as ours, the birth rate tends to fall below the replacement levels required to maintain enough of a working class to
provide for the entitlement classes who generate no income and therefor no taxes to support the entitlements.
Cultures, societies, nations will crumble and fall without men and women who engage in the activities required to
maintain the population. We can already see this happening in Europe where several countries have not been
able to regenerate their natural population and have already named the date there will be no one left! Oh,
somebody will step in to take their place, but it won’t be their children’s children! So, call it what you will, but
same sex marriage is not and cannot be marriage no matter what the court determines. That doesn’t mean that the
secular state can’t recognize same sex unions in any of a variety of ways, but it does mean that it really can’t
expand marriage to include same sex couples. By the way, there’s a legal notion involved here which suggests
that matters can only come before the court where the parties have ‘standing’. For example, I can’t sue the
insurance company for an injury you sustained because I’m not a ‘party’ to the incident or its proper resolution.
As marriage pre-dates the constitution and the court, the ‘party’ of marriage itself has no standing to be
adjudicated in any American court.
The Celebration of Sacraments
Infant Baptism: The Sacrament of Baptism is regularly celebrated on Sunday during or after the Eucharistic Liturgy. Registered
parishioners are asked to arrange for the Baptismal Preparation Class and the Liturgical Celebration by calling the Parish Office.
Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults: RCIA is the process of growing in your faith and love of God. Weekly gatherings take place from September until Easter. If you are interested in learning about Catholicism and joining us please call Deacon Tom
at the rectory.
Penance: The Sacrament of Penance is celebrated at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday at IC, 9:30 a.m. at HSP and 10:30 a.m. IC every Sunday
or by appointment.
Matrimony: Anyone planning to be married must contact the parish at least six months in advance. The exact date and time of
your wedding should not be determined until after consultation with a priest or deacon. If either party has previously been civilly or
religiously married, the Presider is not permitted to set a date for the wedding without resolving the previous marriage.
Pastoral Care of the Sick: When a parishioner is admitted to the hospital, nursing home, or confined to home because of age or
infirmity, please call the Parish Office. Parishioners are ready to visit and to bring Holy Communion. When one is seriously ill, the
healing Presence of the Lord should be requested in the Sacrament of the Sick.
