From the Principal’s Desk . . .
Happy New Year and welcome back to 2016! I hope you all had a peace-filled and fun
Winter Holiday break with your families!
December was extremely dynamic at C2E as it always is. We enjoyed the Scholastic
Book Fair, Hour of Code, and classroom concerts. Winter Holiday parties in elementary
wing and Finishing Well in Middle school rounded out the quarter. Middle school sports
kicked off both boys and girls basketball seasons. The staff left for Winter break
exhausted but pleased with the progress shown by I-Ready mid-year benchmark results
which they will be sharing with you this month, and completely stoked by the school’s
PAARC results released in mid-December.
The 2016-2017 school calendar has been reviewed by Governing Council and is attached
to the newsletter. It is also now available on the C2E Website. As always, please review
it and plan your vacations for scheduled breaks. We need your child in school every
scheduled day to maximize our student’s growth. There is no substitute for the
instruction that occurs inside the classroom.

January brings the countdown to testing season at C2E. Our PAARC and CMAS results
last school year were extremely strong and I am anxious for year 2 results to help us
determine growth. We do use IREADY to determine our student’s growth but having
another data point to assist us in programming academics helps us be more thorough
and accurate. We have almost filled our Kindergarten for next school year. Siblings have
been given priority and we are now working through the extensive wait list. We will not
be opening extra classes in any grade level for next year and we will be running at
capacity.
Finally, I am sending a huge thank you to all parents and grandparents for helping us
with giving tree donations in December. Thanks to your generosity, learning spaces
have been updated in both elementary and middle school. I invite parents to come in
and check out the awesome things the teachers are doing to make their classrooms
movement friendly and engaging!
Go Mammoths!!

VISION/HEARING SCREENING
Dear Parents:
Each year Douglas County Schools conduct vision and hearing screening for all students in the statemandated grade levels K, 1, 2, 3, 5, 7 and 9, as well as new students to the District. The audiologists
oversee the hearing screening and the school nurse consultants oversee the vision screening. Since
the audiologists and the nurses are responsible for many thousands of students, parent volunteers
are utilized to expedite the screening process. The vision screening assistant, audiology technicians
and adult volunteers conduct the screenings.
It is important for you to understand that this is a mass screening to detect academically significant
vision and hearing problems. Certain visual or eye problems will not be picked up in a screening
program, therefore, it should not be considered a substitute for a professional eye exam, particularly
in students who are experiencing difficulty in visual tasks or who have frequent visual complaints.
Students will be vision screened using a Sloan standardized letter chart, an LEA symbol chart or the
Spot Vision Photo Screener. The Spot Vision Photo Screener by Welch Allyn (SPOT) is powered by
sophisticated technology that detects the indication of the following vision issues: near sightedness,
far sightedness, unequal refractive power, blurred vision, pupil size deviations and eye misalignment.
The process is improved if students with glasses are wearing them or at least have any corrective
lenses with them for the screening. This helps to avoid unnecessary referrals for an eye exam.
The hearing screening may be done on a day your child has a cold or an ear infection. If a problem is
detected, your child will be rechecked at school, referred to your doctor or referred to the Audiology
office for a more complete evaluation. If your child is on medication for an ear problem and is being
followed by your doctor, please inform the Audiologist.
Referral letters are sent to the parents of students who fail the vision or hearing screening. Please
return the completed referrals as it assists us in updating your student’s records and improves the
follow up process. Hearing referrals are to be returned to the Audiology/Special Services office and
vision referrals are to be returned to the school. Any questions that you may have about the school
hearing and vision screening can be answered by the Audiologist or school nurse at the phone
numbers listed below.
If you would like to opt out of vision or hearing screening, please request the opt out in writing at
least the day before the screening, so that the request can be sent to the appropriate personnel.
Thank you in advance for your support of these very important programs.

MAMMOTH MARCH UPDATE:
The Mammoth March was an INCREDIBLE success!
We want to send out a HUGE thank you to all of our C2E families for your support,
volunteer time, and fundraising efforts. Together we raised $26,450.00!! This
fundraiser has given C2E an enormous jump start on our goal of embracing a 21st
century learning environment!
C2E has spent the Fun Run monies to finish making the C2E Library a child centered
space. All donated, adult sized furnishings have been replaced with the following:
Kid- and movement-friendly furniture, including puzzle tables and puck seating
Upholstered small group intervention station surrounding
Early elementary-sized white board table
In addition, we have revamped elementary classrooms to include six, child- and
movement-friendly tables with ‘wiggle and bounce’ kid-friendly seating. These tables
help us break away from traditional public school classrooms to student-centered
learning spaces that are flexible and enable kids to work easily in groups or individually,
while fulfilling their need to move.
Finally, we have moved away from traditional middle school math to white board
tables, which allows collaboration and for students to gain greater understanding.

HOLIDAY COOKIE EXCHANGE – THANK YOU!
A huge THANK YOU for all the dozens and dozens of cookies made by our volunteers!!
The teachers and staff loved it. It was a wonderful turnout. We cannot thank you
enough for all the baking of cookies and breakfast items brought in. Heather White did
a fabulous job setting up and decorating the conference room. It was the prettiest
cookie buffet I have ever seen! The teachers and staff each selected a dozen of cookies
to take home. There were a few dozen left over so they were placed in the break room
and were gone in no time. I did sneak a piece of an orange cinnamon roll and it was
delicious! I know that both homemade breakfast casseroles were also a huge hit.
Everything was gobbled up quickly I can assure you.
