Electro-magnetic energy



any form of energy that can be reflected or emitted from objects as waves.
 Frequency – number of waves per unit time (high/low)
 Wavelength – distance between identical point on two waves (long/short)
 As frequency increases, wavelength decreases and vice-versa
Photons – particles of energy; travel at 300,000 km/s (the speed of light)
gamma rays, X-rays, ultraviolet, visible light, infrared, microwaves, radio waves
o Gamma rays have the highest frequency, shortest wavelength, and the most energy
o Radio waves have the lowest frequency, shortest wavelength, and the least energy
o Visible light is in the middle of the spectrum
 When light gets separated, it forms a rainbow
 red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet
o Each color has its own energy level, wavelength, and frequency
 Violet (blue) has the highest frequency, shortest wavelength, and
the most energy
 Red has the lowest frequency, shortest wavelength, and least
energy
o Ultraviolet, Visible, and Infrared are the three forms of energy received directly from the sun
 UV burns the skin
 Visible is what we see
 Infrared provides warmth
