Two of LCHS’s seniors, Monica Brown and McKaylah Lenihan, delivered their senior chapels. The topic for McKaylah’s chapel was friendship. She outlined three categories of traits that will lead to an enduring friendship. These are traits of integrity, of caring, and of compatibility. She emphasized the importance of friendships in the lives of believers, citing scriptures from Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 and Hebrews 10:24. These passages speak to how God brings people into our lives to strengthen us. Friends can be a great influence on us, helping us in our walk with Christ. M o n i c a spoke on focus. She emphasized Philippians 4:8, which gives a list of criteria for that which is worthy of Are You Thankful? School here at LCHS will be dismissed early Wednesday, November 25, for the celebration of Thanksgiving. This can be a great time to focus. She emphasized that all these attributes can be found in God’s word, The Bible. She encouraged all of us to read the Word regularly and pray often. Only then will we have the criterion to discern what is worthy of focus. Thank you, seniors, for sharing your insights with us. LCHS senior Evan Bartel kicked off chapel on Thursday the 12th with the tragic tale of Henry Gunther the last soldier to be killed in World War 1, (See Chapel page 2) By: Emily Eggar stay home and relax, eat some food and spend time with family, but what is Thanksgiving really about? Thanksgiving came around in 1621 when the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared a meal together. The Colonists used the time to praise the Lord and thank him for all his blessings. It wasn’t until 1863 that Thanksgiving was recognized as a national holi(See Thanksgiving page 2) Chapel (Continued from page 1) “Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.” Philippians 4:8 (NASB) one minute before the war ended. Evan told everyone that Gunther died rushing a German position by himself. Even though he knew the war was about to end he wanted to prove himself and, blinded by his pride, he ran to his death. Evan then compared this story to the Israelites of the Old Testament who were constantly rebelling against God who kept giving them grace. Even though we all struggle with pride God, and God alone gives us grace. Evan concluded by having everyone sing “In Christ Alone”. N e x t Jacques spoke on the topic of what it means to be a Christian. He explained that the word Christian is defined differently by different people, some have a positive definition but others have a negative one. The word Christian is found only three times in the Bible a name given by outsiders to Jesus’s disciples. Jacques said that anyone can do anything in the name “Christian”. So it is better to be God’s disciple but not many people call themselves a disciple. Jacques ended by saying it is better to be a disciple than just a Christian and asked everyone “Are we disciples?” be careful not to forget the true meaning of Thanksgiving, to thank God for his blessings. With the commercials on television and “Black Friday” looming around the corner, it would be easy to forget. However, God reminds us to: “Give thanks to the Lord for he is good; his love endures forever.” 1 Chronicles 16:34 (NIV) May you and your family always remember to give thanks on this day. These days, Thanksgiving is celebrated by many people in the U.S. Many people celebrate by spending time with family and eating tasty food. The Tumbleweed Celebrating Lustre Homesteads This coming July 4th is the 100-year homestead celebration in Lustre. In honor of this occasion, we are interviewing people currently living on the original homesteads over the remainder of the school year. The first interview was with Mr. Henry Ortmann whose full name is Heinrick H. Ortmann. He is the father of Lustre’s very own Sam Ortmann. Henry’s father originally settled in the area in 1916 and lived as a bachelor until 1926. At that time he married Elizabeth Redekopp. Henry was born to the couple on November 23, 1938. From his childhood, he clearly remembers milking and feeding cows as well as selling cream when he was younger. He also remembers eating Borscht soup with cabbage and vegetables and, sometimes, chicken. The toys he most remembers are a little toy Caterpillar tractor and a jigsaw puzzle. When asked if he recalled the Cuban missile crisis, he did, and said that no one in his family fought in World War II. Even though he took over the farm at the age of 14, after his dad had a stroke, he still enjoyed hunting and playing basketball in his By: MacKenzie Teichroew spare time. He says he remembers listening to the Lone Ranger and the Old Fashion Hour with Charles Fuller on the family’s battery operated radio because they had no television set. Henry still lives on the land where his father settled, although the original house is gone now. We’re grateful for the time he gave for this interview and for the view of local history he’s provided. Keep him in prayer in the days and months ahead as we all look forward to celebrating this centennial milestone with him and many others. Coach Says Exciting Season Ahead Basketball season is already here! Coaches have been preparing and getting ready to start up the season with intensity. When asked what the goals are for this basketball season for the Lady Lions, Coach Orr said they are to continue building the girls’ basketball program, compete with both JV and Varsity, and reach divisional. Some things he wants to focus on are to build team chemistry, team hustle and intensity, and to work on each player having the desire and confidence to win. As the coach, he says that the exciting thing about this season is, first of all, the great turn out. There are a lot of players this By: McKaylah Lenihan year, which is always a good thing. Another thing to be excited about are the prospects of great Lustre Lady Lion teams this year and into the future. As basketball season is starting up, coaches and players will be working hard to make this season a great one. Kylie Kirkaldie for being selected to the All Conference Volleyball Team!
