Martha's Vineyard non-profit film society The Movie Museum - our 7th Year at the Grange Hall The Movie Museum was the name given to a summer film series offered at the Grange Hall (Old Agricultural Hall) in the 1970s in West Tisbury. Classic movies are screened in the Grange's second floor theatre. Hark back to the 1970's this summer, as we screen several classic 70s movies as part of our film series at the Grange Hall, including that small fish story that was filmed right here on Martha's Vineyard - Jaws (with some special home movies and guests). The entire summer film schedule is available on-line. The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill Location: Tabernacle in Oak Bluffs Tuesday July 12 at 8:00 PM Admission: $6.00 Movies begin at 8 pm after a short introduction, and doors open for admission at 7:30 PM. Admission prices are $6.00 for Adults, $4.00 for seniors. Society membership discounts apply. Popcorn and lemonade can be purchased before the movie. An uncommon bond between man and nature is the focus of Judy Irving's wonderful and informative documentary. The film follows Mark Bittner, an unemployed aging hippie, who lives off the kindness of strangers in the titular San Francisco neighborhood. WILD PARROTS features some incredible close-ups, rare in-depth glimpses into the unique and often amusing habits and activities of one flock of parrots, and a surprise ending. "Quite simply, a beautiful film, in both form and content." -- Ann Hornaday, WASHINGTON POST Little Murders Thursday July 14 at 8:00 PM Location: Katharine Cornell Theatre in Vineyard Haven Admission: $10.00 3rd Annual Outdoor Film Series at Featherstone SPECIAL Q&A WITH JULES FEIFFER, SCREENWRITER Actor Alan Arkin has an impressive film directorial debut with Little Murders, Jules Feiffer's bitter and moving satire (originally produced as an off-Broadway play). Elliot Gould (who also co-produced the film) plays Alfred Chamberlain -- a one time successful photographer who is now down on his luck because he began to eliminate people from his photographs. Also staring Donald Sutherland as a hippie minister. Microcosmos Tuesday July 19 at 8:00 PM Location: Tabernacle in Oak Bluffs Admission: $6.00 This film provides a fascinating, up-close view of the world of insects, snails, and other tiny invertebrates as they work, eat, fight and procreate. From the director of "Winged Migration" this documentary was filmed with special microscopic cameras and high-resolution microphones, which bring the viewer into the subjects' figurative living room. "The movie is a work of art and whimsy as much as one of science" -- Roger Ebert, CHICAGO SUN-TIMES Tarnation Saturday July 23 at 8:00 PM Location: Katharine Cornell Theatre in Vineyard Haven Admission: $8.00 Tarnation is a wondrous achievement, a personal essay that miraculously balances despair and tragedy with an overriding air of hopefulness. Raised by a schizophrenic mother and abusive foster parents in and around Houston, Texas, Jonathan Caouette escaped from his bleak surroundings by hiding behind a video camera. The result is an autobiographical documentary that defies description, a heart-wrenching, devastating testament to personal human spirit. "It is a remarkable film, immediate, urgent, angry, poetic and stubbornly hopeful." -- Roger Ebert, CHICAGO SUN-TIMES Rivers & Tides: Andy Goldsworthy Working With Time Location: Tabernacle in Oak Bluffs Tuesday July 26 at 8:00 PM Admission: $6.00 That rare film about an artist that is, in itself, a work of art, Rivers and Tides: Andy Goldsworthy Working With Time is an extraordinary journey into the world and mind of Scottish sculptor Andy Goldsworthy. A land-artist who uses materials from nature to make site-specific works, Goldsworthy allows the elements to have the last say in his beautiful creations, as his ingenious patterns of wood, leaves, stone and ice move and erode over time. "Ravishingly beautiful" -- NY Times Commune! with Jonathan Berman, Director Location: Katharine Cornell Theatre in Vineyard Haven Thursday July 28 at 8:00 PM Admission: $8.00 In an era of gated communities and pre-nuptial agreements, when private ownership is a social sacrament, the idea that established Black Bear Ranch seems almost alien. In the late 1960s, a handful of young people gathered up enough money to buy a tract of land in Siskiyou County, in the extreme northern part of California. There, they set out on a social experiment to toss out all norms and taboos of mainstream culture, inviting anyone who could get there to come live among them. "Free land for a free people" - Elsa Marley, co-founder of the Black Bear Ranch Commune For more information please visit, www.mvfilmsociety.com A new island tradition continues this summer with outdoor film screening at the Featherstone Center for the Arts. "Drive-in" and set up your blanket and/or lawn chairs, bring a picnic and enjoy movies under the stars. Join us Tuesday nights from August 16-30. Wells classic - The Invisible Man on August 23rd and The Bride of Frankenstein on August 30th.
