Spot Quiz… Each month a few members of the Parish will be asked a short topical question. This will give a few extra parishioners the chance to feature in the Gazette. THIS MONTH’S QUESTION: Last month we celebrated the feast of Pentecost with extra special Masses on that weekend. Everyone was encouraged to get into the spirit of Pentecost and wear ‘red’ to Church and the readings at all the Masses were read in different languages … so we asked a few parishioners: What language would you most like to learn? Tony Cox (Japanese) & Fr Andrew (Polish). It was great to hear the Word of the Lord proclaimed in different languages. First Eucharist… Congratulations to the 141 children from St Brigid’s & St Louis’ Schools who received their First Eucharist last month. The children in our Catechist Class will receive their First Eucharist on 28th June. Message Sticks… At Masses on 30th & 31st May our Parish launched our Aboriginal Message Sticks. In Aboriginal culture message sticks were used as a means of communication with other groups. They were made of wood and came in various sizes, shapes and markings. They were not comprised of writing but of symbol; the messenger conveyed the details. The Message Stick is carried with great pride, in the entrance procession alongside the book containing the Christian Word and is placed on the lectern. This is a powerful symbolic gesture manifesting the willingness of both cultures to accept the Word and the coming together of peoples of different cultures to worship the Creator. Happy Anniversary… Congratulations to Carmel & Michael Barker who recently celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary. It was a lovely coincidence that on that weekend everyone was wearing red at Mass for Pentecost but also for their ruby anniversary. Sympathy… Mario Cortese (81) Husband of Fortunata, father of Rena, Tony, Josie, Donna Cardamone, Louise, Roy, Sandy. Mario’s funeral was at St Brigid’s on Tuesday 5th May. We welcome Lara Alateras to our Parish Staff. Lara has been employed to assist with book keeping for our two Parishes. Lara works for 4 hours in the Parish Office on Thursdays. RCIA Thanksgiving Mass… The Masses on the weekend of 16th & 17th May were special Thanksgiving Masses for this year’s RCIA Group, Karen Kearns, Amanda Howden, Loretta Ilott, Feng (Kelly) Tang, Simone Rellis, Juliana Zerdoner-Davis. Some of the group shared their stories at these Masses and we reprint a few of them: Amanda Howden: I would like to thank Susan, Fr Andre and the RCIA Team members for being so friendly and welcoming. I would also like to specially thank Bernadette for being my sponsor. Thank you for your guidance and friendships. I look forward to seeing you all on a regular basis from now on. Since I was a child I had always wanted to be baptised and am thrilled to now have been. I have grown and learnt so very much from the RCIA program and enjoyed it immensely. I would also like to thank all members of the Parish for accepting my family and me into your community. Karen Kearns: Becoming a Catholic was not something that came to me in a visitation or sudden revelation. I had attended Catholic Schools and I married a Catholic so I’ve been immersed in a Catholic environment for much of my life. No, the desire to become a Catholic crept up on me. It came when helping my children with their religion homework, through receiving meals when unwell from other parishioners, from feeling strangely at peace after attending Mass with my family, following Fr Andrew’s enlightening sermons. I realized that God was deeply and firmly engrained in me. I never knew quite how one became a Catholic until I attended last year’s Easter Vigil (we had no idea the Rite of Initiation took place that night – we only went on the Saturday night as my 6 kids would be too high from Easter eggs to sit still at a Sunday Mass) Watching the ceremony as the 3 ladies were accepted into the Church was beautiful and the joy on their faces made me envious. Next thing, I was starting the RCIA journey myself. At first we would just get together during Mass to analyse the day’s Gospel in a religious sense with our team members. But, before long, we were applying it to our everyday life. The journey was becoming more personal for us all and we were all becoming friends as a result. As the night of the Vigil approached the excitement amongst us was palpable. The Vigil itself was a night of pure joy. Each step brought us closer to becoming a Catholic, even the moon put on an eclipse for the celebration! Now as a fully fledged Catholic, I feel whole. There is no other word to describe it. And to anyone who is considering the journey – I’d definitely recommend it. Juliana Zerdoner-Davis: I was a mere baby of 9 months when I was baptised into the Catholic faith, but follow through to confirmation, was not supported and hence confirmation was hindered and continued to be hindered for decades to follow; with many challenges and obstacles, many beyond my control. As the years passed, priest after priest, I had repeatedly been told I could not be confirmed due to circumstance and with that, I carried the burden of shame, a sense of unworthiness, a pariah. I would come to Mass & watch everyone take communion whilst I knelt in the pew praying to God, with tears welling in my eyes & a pit in my gut that I struggled to overcome. In the days when the church was open at all hours, I would come in and sit alone, praying to GOD & asking; “Please help me find a way through this pain”. I got to the point in my life that I thought my deepest wish of confirmation would never be realized, in the faith I held so dear and close to my heart. Aside of my trials and tribulations, I noticed that in society, for much of our lives we are identifiable by a NUMBER…. Employee No., Tax File No., Medicare No., License No., Bank a/c No., Customer No., Loyalty Card No., The list is endless… But when you get confirmed; you are identified by your NAME & not by a number. I found this to be incredibly moving. By now you may be asking what does any of this have to do with the RCIA program. My answer is ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING! When Father Andrew Jekot came to this Parish, I yet again asked if there was any avenue of getting confirmed; after having told him of my challenges. At the time, I had unfortunately missed the commencement of the RCIA program, which meant I had to wait for the following years’ RCIA program; but it was Father Andrew who gave me HOPE, a HOPE for which I am forever indebted. Upon starting the RCIA program 23rd Aug 2014 I am also indebted to the Team Coordinators and mentors whom gave of their time, words of wisdom, friendship and guidance & to the other 5 participants whom I now share a lifelong bond that bought about the day I had so longed for my entire life. On 4th April 2015 I was officially confirmed. Father Andrew, RCIA program & Team, other participants, my wonderful Sponsor, and parishioner have been the chariots that have led to the most wonderful gift of acceptance, friendship, love, but most of all; PEACE, Peace of the Holy Spirit. That is what the RCIA program has meant to me. PEACE What is RCIA?… Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults RCIA is the process by which adults who are seeking to find out more about the Catholic religion are supported and guided by our community. Their report on the experience is printed below. Well done everyone. St Brigid’s Korean Drummers Korean Drumming has been a massive learning experience. Our group is called Han Sa Rum meaning we love KOREA! When we practised we gave up our recess time to learn our song and be prepared for Federation Square and Sydney. In practise we were either on the Bok, kkwangguari and Gangoui (Korean Drums). We were all very organized which means we had to come in take our drum out and take our shoes off and put them to the side and wait for the others. When we arrived at Federation Square we got changed into our costumes, which were long pants and a white saggy top and colourful stripes (blue, yellow, black and red.) We opened the Korean Festival on Saturday 23rd May in front of approximately 2000 people. We celebrated after the big day. We were very grateful for the experience. We all love Korean drumming very much and we would not take it back for the world. by Ruby, Ryan, Zara, Abbey, Stephanie, Maisie Andrei, Teah & Patrick. St Brigid’s Fun Fundraiser.. He covered the history of U3A with its origins being in France. Originally there were three U3A groups in the area – Dingley, Chelsea & Mordialloc and they have merged to be Kingston which currently has a membership of about 600 and runs many courses, on every week day during school terms. As a sign of appreciation John was presented with a St Louis’ 50th Anniversary bottle of Premium Shiraz. The evening concluded with a light supper. John Mitchell & Peter Waltho Children’s Liturgy… Parish Profile… This month we profile Kathie Martin who is currently getting Children’s Liturgy going at our Sunday Masses. Kathie and her family (children and grandchildren) are all very involved in the Parish. KATHIE MARTIN (Formerly: Army Brat) Children’s Liturgy is currently on each Sunday during 9.30am Mass at St Louis’. (except when it is school holidays or Family Masses). Children’s Liturgy will start at St Brigid’s next term during 11am Mass. Children’s Liturgy allows young school aged children to leave Mass during the Liturgy of the Word to listen to a children’s version of the Gospel and do a related activity. Special thanks to Samantha O’Rourke and Kathie Martin for getting Children’s Liturgy started at St Louis’. We still need extra volunteers to help run the program at 9.30am or 11am Masses. If you would like to assist with Children’s Liturgy or want more information please contact: Kathie Martin 9512 0849 or the Parish Office 9580 7981 Kathie Martin celebrates her birthday with her grandchildren and a cake made by daughter in law, Mel Family: only daughter of Lily & Frank Lebler. (Lily a born Quaker, artist and lover of scripture; Frank a career soldier, violinist, singer and lover of all sport.) My husband Ray was one of eleven children and his father died when he was a very small child. Ray came to Australia from Ireland in 1965. His mother encouraged him to go before he turned 18 in that way he could have ten pounds to get started or help pay for his ticket. Our children are grown up and married. You may know one of them as our 3 boys and their families all live in the parish. Brigid married Ben at St Brigid’s, 2 years ago. They live at Southbank and are both working hard in the corporate world. Rob works for Wesfarmers, his wife Maree enjoys art and craft and she decorated St Louis’ Easter Candle this year. Children: Will, Jack & Annie. Brian and wife Gen are both teachers. Gen teaches at St Louis’ and was also involved in RCIA this year. Children: Patrick, Michael & Elizabeth. Daniel is another trained teacher who uses his skills in the corporate world, his wife Mel runs her own business and is the best cake decorator I have ever seen. Children: Caitlin & Timothy. Next year Timothy and Annie are starting school at St Louis’ so all 8 Martin cousins will be attending St Louis School. Will and Michael are looking forward to becoming altar servers with Patrick, who loves being an altar server at Mass on Sunday. Parish Profile – Kathie Martin cont’d… Work/Profession: I cannot call it work as that term congers up feelings of hard labour, so I like to feel that, I am privileged to walk with the sick and dying as a personal pastoral and listening friend, although I do sometimes do some practical stuff for the journey. It is great to see the Holy Spirit working with people as they bring resolutions to their life. This discovery brings about feelings of great peace in me. Wow! Schools attended: The first four years of my school life was at Our Ladies in Brisbane, the classes were quite large 9one year 82 children - the poor nuns spent most of the day hitting the desk with a cane trying to get our attention.) As a child of a military member, I experienced living in many different towns across Australia, some very isolated country postings, some larger country towns and cities as well. Parish involvement: Children Ministry / Liturgy. As a child on Sunday I sometimes attended, Mass if available in our area (within bike riding distance) or if Dad or a kind neighbour would take me. Also Mum would tell me of different Sunday schools being held asking me if I’d like to attend, sometimes I would ride my bike for what seemed miles to attend. I always attended Catholic instruction if it was presented in the school but I also loved the Baptists and Methodists as well - they had great bible based pictures (although these pictures were made of very thin paper, the size of 2 postage stamps put together) I just loved them and would wear them out looking at them. The Catholics had Holy Pictures some of Mary, and others of Angels who watched you while crossing over dangerous rivers using a worn out bridge; these holy pictures were in my mind a better quality because my Dad had to purchase them. However the delicate Bible based pictures were unquestionably my all-time favourites. My child hood experiences are the real reason why I believe that next to the Eucharist, Ministering to Children, using the Word of God and expressing it in a way children can own, is the most important tool a child can have today in this a world which offers so many other choices. Not all children have the benefits of attending great schools of God like our St Louis’ and St Brigid with fantastic God fearing teachers. A sentence to describe yourself: Someone with tenacity of spirit and the ambition to boast about the good things of our God. Hobbies: Visiting Art Galleries and Icon Writing Favourite holiday place: Sommers beach, or anywhere in the Bush Favourite night out: Anywhere with food, friends and family Favourite book: Kathie wrote a long list! - plus reviews! – too many to mention! Kathie Martin wishes you peace for 2015 Greatest claim to fame: Being free to come to church on Sunday and really know I will not be shot for attending. Thank God for freedom. If you could change one thing about yourself: There is nothing in my life I would like to change. Well maybe to go floating in a swimming pool each day for one hour. Shame the pool closes at 9pm because that is when I am ready to go. Three people you would like to have dinner with: I thought today I would consider the ones that I will invite over when I get to heaven. # Miriam - Moses’ sister I would like to hear her praising and see her dancing for God’s glory. Maybe she could teach me to dance and sing - I think that would take eternity! # St Anne - Jesus’ Granny, I cannot wait to have a chat: To hear her stories of what kind of kids Jesus and Mary were growing up. We will swap Granny stories over a picnic by the crystal sea. It’s going to be a good giggle. # My Great Grandmothers were women who built the Kingdom of God on earth through their pioneering spirits which developed their gifts of: service, music, knowledge, science, and medical practises’ and most of all they all professed love, faith and trust in God; one as a Quaker and the other as a Catholic My Paternal Great Grandmother who, with her husband, mortgaged their family farm, to fund the building of a local catholic church. The Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Booval is still in use today, approximately 155 years on. My Maternal Great Grandmother was a MD the first woman to graduate from Oxford. She also graduated from universities in France and Germany. The Queensland Government invited her to come to Queensland in the 1870’s to help explore the chemistry of local plants and their possible use in the treatments of illnesses. The Queensland Historical Society maintains her grave as one of “a significant pioneer woman.” Through family oral history we know these women as virtuous servants of God, their community while loving their family.
