Challenge Words 1. semifinal 2. supermarket 3. superpower bound, found, ground, pound, round, sound, *prefixes are groups of letters before a base word or root prefix semi – means half or partly (semicircle, semicolon, semiformal, semitrailer) prefix super – means really big, above or beyond (supercluster, superglue, superhero, superhighway, superman,) For each two-week period, students will complete many of the following tasks in class: Meet the Words share information about the features of the words (plurals, double consonants, silent letters, etc. , definitions and the relationships among words) Making Words/Patterned Words arrange a set of letters to create new words sort for related words and look for patterns study prefixes, root words, and suffixes related to the challenge words Linkage find as many words as you can from a linkage strip (words from the lesson and other additional words typed together without any spaces) Boggle find as many words in sequences of adjacent letters as you can (adapted from the word game designed by Allan Turoff) Word Smart teacher poses a question and the students search for answers among their 12 high frequency word cards Use Spellingcity.com at home for more practice.
