id you know that JFS runs a kosher Group
Home for eight adults with disabilities? Learn
more about this hidden community gem through this
interview with Mike Lobato, JFS Group Home
manager since 2008.
Family Matters (FM): In your role as Group Home
manager, what are your main responsibilities?
Mike Lobato (ML): I am in charge of the overall
day-to-day operations, including supervising six
counselors. We provide 24/7 care for our seven
residents (we currently have an opening for one more
resident). It is my job to ensure that we are providing
the best quality care and home environment for our
residents, while also observing all of the kosher rules,
Jewish customs, and regulations that go along with
being a group home.
FM: What is your favorite part of your job?
ML: I love making a difference for the people we
serve and for our community. It sounds like an
infomercial, but I truly believe that
“Our residents exude such our Group Home is a valuable asset
warmth and joy from
in our community and I am very
their hearts every day and happy to be a part of that. Our
residents exude such warmth and
you just can’t experience
joy from their hearts every day and
that anywhere else.”
you just can’t experience that
—Mike Lobato
anywhere else! Plus, I am so
grateful to JFS for allowing us to build an
outstanding program and team to serve our residents.
Each day is a privilege to work with such dedicated
staff and to truly make a
difference for our wonderful
residents.
FM: What is the most
challenging part of your job?
ML: It would have to be
balancing the regulatory
guidelines and expectations

tour. (Mike Lobato is on far right.)
while ensuring that we are providing the best quality
care around. I feel that we do this very well, but it
requires a team effort and the strong support of JFS
to make this all work. Also, I am not Jewish, so I am
continuing to learn how to support our Jewish
traditions and customs.
FM: What attracted you to working with people with
disabilities?
ML: I wanted the opportunity to make a difference
in people’s lives, to help them grow, prosper, and be
the best they can be. I’ve worked in this field for
more than 18 years from direct care to senior
management in group homes, apartments, and day
programs, and JFS is by far the best. Our JFS Group
Home is one of a kind and I count my blessings
everyday that I am allowed to be part of it.
FM: What else do you want people to know about
the Group Home?
ML: We love when people from the community
come visit us! People come on a regular basis to bring
their pets to visit, share meals with us, play games,
and more. We always want new friends to come and
we welcome you to bring your smile and your laugh!
Have a BBQ or a Shabbat dinner with us or just stop
by for a visit. Our door is open and we invite you to
get to know us! G
If you would like to visit the Group Home with your
family, friends, or community group, please contact Mike
Lobato at (303) 758-1229 for more details.

Volunteer Spotlight

Traci Lato
eet Traci Lato, a Friendly Visitor volunteer, and
her dog, Khai, an eight-year-old retired racing
greyhound! Traci and Khai began visiting Mag more
than two years ago and continue to see her weekly,
providing friendship and companionship. Traci moved
to Denver at the end of 2008 and came to JFS seeking
a volunteer opportunity she could do with her dog. “I
had been a Friendly Visitor through the JFS in San
Francisco and I worked with seniors at my job with the
Jewish Federation in St. Louis,” says Traci. “When I
moved to Denver, I knew I wanted to continue my
volunteer work with seniors, ideally in a setting that
allowed me to bring my dog to brighten someone’s
day.”
And that is exactly what happens when they visit
Mag! When Traci first started seeing Mag, they went
out to lunch, saw movies, painted pottery, played
cards, or simply hung out with Traci’s dog. Now the
two ladies mainly play cards and talk while Khai sits
at their feet and often rests his head in Mag’s lap.
“Mag literally lights up when she sees Khai and he
also gets really excited to see her!” says Traci with a
smile. “She gives him treats and plenty of hugs and
kisses each time we come.”
After Traci is done visiting Mag, she takes Khai
around to visit some other residents in the building.
Traci says, “Animals are so therapeutic and everyone just
brightens up when they see and pet Khai.” Traci also
volunteers at an equine therapy ranch in Conifer on the
weekends, working with children with disabilities.
Traci not only spends a lot of her free time
helping others, but she works as Denver Scholarship
Foundation’s
volunteer manager
and started her own
volunteer
management
consulting business
to help nonprofit
organizations start
or improve their
volunteer programs.
She is also on the
board of directors of Denver DOVIA (Directors of
Volunteers in Agencies), an association that promotes
professionalism in the field of volunteer engagement,
advocates for issues concerning volunteerism, and
provides networking and educational opportunities
for volunteer engagement professionals. In addition,
Traci works with Metro Volunteers as a volunteer
trainer and consultant.
In her spare time — although we’re not sure
where she finds any —Traci enjoys playing volleyball,
hiking with Khai, and taking advantage of all that
Colorado has to offer! Thank you, Traci for your
incredible commitment to Mag and for being a
steady source of support and friendship for her! G
JFS is currently seeking more Friendly Visitor
volunteers to brighten isolated seniors’ lives. For more
information, please contact Nancy Benyamin, director of
volunteer services, at (303) 597-5000, ext. 369 or
[email protected].

“I’m honored to be the newest board chair of
this great agency and continue the legacy
created by my predecessors. The unfortunate
reality is that there will be no shortage of
demand in the coming years for the important
services we provide to our community. I’m
anxious to get started in collaboration with the
wonderful staff of JFS, the fine board of
directors, and our community partners.”
“JFS is such a compelling organization
because of the direct impact that it has on
people’s lives. I am honored to be joining a
board comprised of such committed and
caring people as well as continuing to work
with the staff and volunteers who make
JFS as impactful and successful as it is.”
“I'm thrilled to be joining the JFS board
again. Knowing all the people JFS helps, and
seeing such tangible results, makes the JFS
board a very special and rewarding place to
spend my time. The JFS staff is phenomenal
— they help make being a board member a

Farewell Message from Steve Kris, JFS Board Chair
M
y tenure as JFS board chair has been one of the most interesting and satisfying
experiences I have had as a community volunteer. When I was asked to serve in
this job, I was very reluctant as I’m not the most outgoing person. My career had
always been about being the sole decision maker and I had very little experience
working as a lay leader of others. For me this was a great learning experience and
opportunity for personal growth! I appreciate all the patience and understanding of
the staff and board of my on-the-job training in these skills.
As board chair, I’m very grateful I had the opportunity to see first-hand how
accomplished and passionate our staff is — it was truly inspiring! Also, the privilege to
collaborate with our board members and make new friends was priceless.
I am leaving office proud of the way JFS was able to plan and execute through the
most challenging economic environment in modern times. The agency was able to
serve our growing number of clients throughout the crises. As we move forward, we
are still challenged to secure resources to continue the mission; however we have
shown the community that JFS is, and always will be, here to serve no matter what challenges arise. I am truly
grateful to the community for all the support shown to JFS and for valuing our work and mission! G
