Auction Napa Valley raises $14 million for local causes
Napa Valley Vintners’ 36th annual Auction Napa
Valley raised more than $14.2 million for local
health and youth organizations.
Last year, the auction raised $15.8 million, and
the record was $18.4 million in 2014 as the
economy recovered from the recession.
The Vintners have donated more than $150
million from auction proceeds in the community
since the first auction in 1981.
The honorary chair was Agustin F. Huneeus,
whose father, Agustin Huneeus, was chair 20
years ago.
Guests enjoyed meals at vintners’ homes and
wineries on Thursday and Friday nights.
I was fortunate to visit The Hess Collection on
Thursday night.
At Hess, we had an illuminating tour of the
magnificent art collection first including new
pieces, and I was able to talk to CEO Tim Persson,
who taking steps to refresh the respected brand.
Nearly 2,000 people attended the Napa Valley
Barrel Auction at Robert Mondavi Winery on
Friday. It was hot later in the day but delightful as
we munched and sipped in the shade before filling
the barrel room to taste.
New this year was the silent Big Board Auction
with Napa Valley wines, winemaker dinners, rare
Napa Valley experiences and other fun.
This year for the first time, the Wine Train took
guests from its station in Napa to the barrel
auction on its new Quattro Vino train, which now
takes passengers to visit four wineries for tastes.
We sipped sparkling wine as we passed the cars
stopped in traffic, the best way to travel!
Friday night, I was treated to dinner at the
stunning Mark Pulido and Donna Walker’s
stunning estate high up on Mount Veeder near the
end of Partrict Road.
It sits on 115 acres, 15 planted to Cabernet and
Chardonnay two years ago. For now, Thomas
Rivers-Brown makes impressive Cabernet wines
from Melanson Vineyard on Pritchard Hill and
one in a well-draining spot in St. Helena.
Chef Peter O’Toole created a sumptuous dinner
with lobster, foie gras, beef – and whole woodfire-roasted Australian Périgord truffles!
The Saturday format changed this year, with
morning and lunch events at locations other than
Meadowood.
I took a tour of three auction beneficiaries in St.
Helena, then enjoyed a pleasant lunch at Peter
and Willinda McCrae’s home. Other guests
enjoyed yoga, croquet and exploring the Napa
River restoration.
Then nearly 900 guests descended for the live
auction at Meadowood, which was followed by
dinner under the stars prepared by one of South
America’s leading chef, Francis Mallmann, who
roasted huge hunks of beef on poles above searing
coals. Many guests still had the energy for dancing
afterwards!
Sunday, the Coppola family hosted the farewell
brunch at their Inglenook Estate .
They will be the honorary chairs for the 2017
Auction Napa Valley.
Many of this year’s attendees are hoping they’ll
choose a Godfather theme for next year’s auction
but whatever it is, the creative family is sure to
come up with something memorable.
