Tonga’s first ever Constitution, for King Tupou I. Baker died in
1903, and this monument was erected after his death.

Tonga crowned its new King in front of a church
congregation of 1 000 well-wishers that included
Tongan, British, Japanese and Thai royalty, as well as
South Pacific chiefs and other leaders.

ritual on 30 July 2008. Consuming a coconut shell
of kava in a single motion was the final act in a
ceremony that saw the King officially became the
23rd ruler of Tonga.
