Notes From Campus 30 The picture above could have been taken this morning, as the wild “spring” weather we have been having threw some flakes our way. The hills look downright wintry, and long johns have been taken out of storage. We continue to rocket along here on campus, with dryland training and classes filling the days. The mountain biking has been particularly awesome, though this weekend’s precipitation may set us back a bit… HEADLINES WALKER ’11 SINGS GMVS CALLS ON WASHINGTON SKI SEASON SUMMARY LAX SPLITS WEEK ON TRACK ALUMNI IN NYC LEWs HONORED NORDIC PICS CLASSIFIEDS DETAILS All- State Music Junior Ryley Walker spent the last 3 days in Rutland at the AllState Music Festival. The students will have the opportunity to speak with Vermont’s preeminent legislator, and we will have a report on the results of their session with one of the country’s most influential leaders. Celebration of Results The snow that arrived last night and continues to fall makes this next item quite timely. This winter saw many GMVS skiers make great strides in their sport. At all levels of competition, from JIV races to NorAms, High School Championships to Junior Nationals and JOs, GMVS skiers were just plain FAST. Below is a general accounting of our athletes’ fantastic achievements: On the Nordic side: -8 of 13 athletes qualified for Junior Nationals -One National Champion (7th-ranked junior in the US and named to US J1 team) -4 athletes named All-American. One foreign racer met all criteria but was not eligible, as the selection is for US citizens only. -3 podium finishes in junior NorAm biathlon -1 podium finish at Eastern Canadian Biathlon championships -Ski recruits accepted at Bowdoin, Dartmouth, Middlebury, and Williams On the Alpine side: Ladies: -70% of the team (14 different athletes of an active group of 21) achieved at least one podium finish (top 3) in FIS or USSA level. -29 “podiums” (including 10 wins) at the J2 level including J2 Nationals and Eastern Championships -19 podiums (9 wins) at the overall FIS level including NorAms and Canadian Nationals -13 USSA podium finishes (5 wins). -one athlete named to the Canadian National Team -ski recruits accepted at Bates, Brown, Colby, Dartmouth, and St. Lawrence Men: -41% of the team (15 different athletes of an active group of 37) achieved podium finishes at each level. -37 FIS podiums (17 wins), including US Nationals, NorAms and Eastern Championships -29 podiums at the J2 level, including J2 Nationals -7 USSA podium finishes (4 wins) -one athlete earned 2010-2011 World Cup starts by winning the overall NorAm Super G title. Lacrosse Has Mixed Week The lacrosse teams had mixed results this week, but both teams are showing signs of being solid contenders this season. The girls’ season finally got underway on Thursday, as the team hosted neighbors Harwood Union. It was a surprisingly close game, as the hosts took a while to get on track. However, led by the scoring punch of junior Haleigh Carbone (5 goals), the team eked out an 11-10 win. Also finding the net were Ainsley Carbone ’10 with 2 goals, as well as Katherine Scalia ’10, Emma LeBlanc ’10 , Dani LeBlanc ’13, and Sam Davis ’10, who each had a tally. Collecting her first career win was Hannah Kadah’11, who recorded 15 saves in an impressive start. Saturday’s rainy date with Oxbow proved a challenge as well, and the long drive back from Bradford was made a bit longer by the sting of a tough 10-9 loss. The team staked the hosts to a 4-0 lead before getting things going offensively, and fought to draw to within one goal with less than 2 minutes on the clock. The Oxbow goalie proved up to the task, though, turning away several GMVS shots on the cage to send our crew on its soggy trip home. The team had many bright spots, however, with junior Haleigh Carbone continuing on her hot streak by scoring 4 goals. Sophomore Maddie Leopold proved the set-up player, providing 4 assists, while Hannah Kadah was again sharp in goal, making 14 saves. Also scoring single goals were Susan Campbell ‘12, Kelly Glander ‘13, Katherine Scalia, Ainsley Carbone, and Emma LeBlanc. The guys played the first of their 3-game weeks, beginning with a home game with Sharon Academy on Tuesday. Hans Halvorsen ’12 again provided the hat trick to pace the home squad, with Sam Worley ‘13, Mitch Grimmer ‘12 and Sandy Vietze ‘11 each netting a pair. Cooper McNealus ‘10 added one of his own, while Dan Bell ‘11 made 9 saves for the victory. The squad then travelled to Mt. Abe for the return game with the eagles, and again 8 goals proved the key in an 8-2 win. The team rocketed to a 5-0 halftime lead and never looked back, as Hans Halvorsen and Sam Worley each scored 2 goals to lead the scoring. Getting into the act as well were Drew Duffy ‘13, Cooper McNealus, Mitch Grimmer and Sandy Vietze. Dan Bell was once again solid in the crease, turning away 15 shots. The team then splashed into Saturday’s swamp Bowl game with Montpelier, and, as is typical of this matchup, the teams needed extra time to decide the outcome. GMVS never trailed in regulation, at one point building a 3-goal lead behind the scoring punch of a hat trick by Sandy Vietze. The visitors kept crawling (swimming?) back, and knotted the score at 10-10 with their fifth man-advantage goal of the game with just under 3 minutes left. Overtime loomed, and as fingers and toes began to numb in the steady rain, Montpelier managed to push the winning goal past the defense with about 90 seconds left in the first overtime period. Although shorthanded, the GMVS squad did well to push the Solons, with Cooper McNealus and Hans Halvorsen scoring a pair of goals apiece, and Tomek Dobrzanski ‘11, Mitch Grimmer and Sam Worley finding the net once apiece. Dan Bell’s 13 saves featured some sparklers, as he managed to handle the mud bog that the balls were splashing through. Next week is the season’s busiest, and features some new and familiar opponents, but a lot of travel: Girls: May 10 Mon May 13 Thur May 15 Sat Guys: May 11 Tue May 13 Thur May 15 Sat at Essex at Chelsea Montpelier at Stratton at Lamoille at Sharon 4:30 PM 4:30 PM 11:00 4:00 4:00 11:00 Track Update Sara and Anna Kikut ’11 continue to outpace the competition on the local sprint scene. At the Essex meet, Sara edged out her sister for the win in the 100 meters, in a time of 12.94, ahead of Anna, who clocked 13.15. In the prestigious Burlington Invitational, Sara took big wins in both the 100 and the 200 meters. With Anna bowing out in the 100 with a false start, Sara won Friday’s race by just 0.03 seconds. In the 200 on Saturday, she was not only fastest, but also set a new meet record of 25.74 seconds, breaking the old mark by nearly 2 tenths of a second! The fastest feet in Vermont: Sara Kikut on the BHS podium Alumni and Friends Gather in NYC Once again, Bill and Betsey (parents of Liz ’09) Cochrane hosted a big crew of GMVS alumni, parents and friends of GMVS at the headquarters of Saatchi and Saatchi in New York City. The nearly 100 people in attendance enjoyed the Paris-themed dinner (complete with a crepe bar for both dinner and dessert), before heading out to continue the celebration far into the night. A big thank-you to the Cochranes for another wonderful event! Some familiar faces: the Class of 2009 was well represented: Brett Depper-Goldstein, Nick Thimm, Liz Cochrane, Devin Delaney, and Eric Harwood share stories from their first post-GMVS year. The whole gang enjoying the festivities at Saatchi and Saatchi.
