Although terminology is less important than what we do, it’s worth
understanding the various terms used around NGW, which are used
almost interchangeably locally and nationally. The following glossary
may help:
•
Next Generation Working – is the NCC / LGSS Programme to
deliver the changes required to support Smart Working.
•
Smart / Smarter Working – is a term used in national literature to
describe what is involved in actual working practices where Next
Generation Working programme principles are delivered. It
includes flexible and mobile working.
•
Flexible working - usually refers to how and when staff work
(shared space, flexible times etc)
•
Mobile working – usually refers to changes that impact on where
someone works, as in providing staff with more mobility to use
touch down points etc
•
Agile working – is used interchangeably with many of the above –
best avoided, as we already have enough terms!
•
Smarter Business Programme (SBP) – is a programme run by
Cambridgeshire County Council (CCC) that is pursuing many similar
outcomes to NGW.
