Go Francis and rebuild my church.

“Go Francis
and rebuild my
church.”
Continuing the Work
of St. Francis at
The Village at Marymount
2012 Annual Report
Dear Supporter of The Village at Marymount:
St. Francis was praying in front of a Crucifix and Christ spoke to him saying, “Go Francis and rebuild my
church.” It took Francis time to realize there were two kinds of rebuilding to be done: physically repairing
buildings was one, but just as important was rebuilding the people who are “the church.”
In the true spirit of St. Francis, and of our sponsors, the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Third Order of St.
Francis, we are continually in a rebuilding mode at The Village at Marymount, and we remain committed
to providing compassionate, competent care and innovative programming.
Our physical rebuilding is made possible by loyal benefactors like you whose names you will read within
this Annual Report. You helped us to enjoy another stellar year in 2012. Last August we opened our
state-of-the-art Parker Hannifin Foundation Therapy and Wellness Center. This facility added 4,000
square feet of space to our Rehabilitation Services footprint and enables us to enhance the delivery of
inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services.
Jeffry A. Myers
Chief Operating Officer
Several initiatives allowed us to improve the way we care for the physical well-being of our residents.
We implemented the Connected Care Program, in conjunction with Cleveland Clinic hospital system
as a way to provide close medical attention to residents while delivering quality care and reduced
rehospitalizations. Villa St. Joseph is one of Cleveland Clinic’s preferred post acute settings on the
south east side of Cleveland for this service.
As part of our Rehospitalization Reduction Initiative – which saw us reduce rehospitalizations from 31
percent in 2011 to 24 percent in 2012 – we began to utilize the DrConnect Tool. DrConnect is a Webbased application that links physicians and proxy caregivers to real-time information from Cleveland
Clinic’s electronic medical record regarding resident encounters, labs, procedures, medication lists, and
even imaging studies including both the textual reports and actual images.
The rebuilding continues into 2013 with the renovation of the living area at Marymount Place. This
project, which coincides with Marymount Place’s 25th anniversary, was made possible as a result of
another record-setting Celebration of Life Gala. We look forward to you seeing you at the 2013 gala,
which will be held from 6 to 11 p.m. Friday, October 25 at Executive Caterers at Landerhaven. Proceeds
from this year’s event will support future renovations within Clare Hall.
Joseph Fornal
Board Chair
Your generous support continues to astound us and open the doors to more and more possibilities as
we continue to rebuild the lives of those who entrust us to care for them -- just as St. Francis would
have done. It is a time to rebuild at The Village at Marymount – not necessarily churches as Francis
thought God was calling him to do. It is also a time to reassess the direction of life’s journey to respond
to God’s invitation to enter more fully into healing and wholeness.
May God bless you and your family!

The manner in which the lives of Garfield
Heights residents Thomas Majewski and James
Gabrenya mirror each other reflects just how
close the two cousins are to each other.
Not only did they grow up together just a few
streets apart and share the same profession
– both are mail carriers, Thomas in Brooklyn,
James in Newburgh Heights – but both recently
underwent knee replacement surgery on the
same day at the skillful hands of Dr. Venkat R.
Rapuri.
After Mr. Majewski and Mr. Gabrenya had their
knee replacement surgeries both men decided
to rehab their surgical procedure at The Village
at Marymount. The men also participated in an
outpatient therapy program in the new Parker
Hannifin Foundation Therapy and Wellness
Center.
Mr. Majewski had his left knee replaced five
years ago and did his rehabilitation at Villa St.
Joseph. “This time I brought him (Mr. Gabrenya)
along with me,” he said of his return to The
Village at Marymount.

Mary stepped up to the plate and has been

energy and exuberance keep her in the game
and focused on helping her teammates do the
same.

Joe is a fitness fanatic, which is why it is not
uncommon to see him working out regularly in
the Parker Hannifin Foundation Therapy and
Wellness Center. When a brief illness led Joe
to require care beyond what Marymount Place
could provide for him, he merely moved next
door to Villa St. Joseph’s Continuing Care Unit.
His lifestyle is the same at The Village at
Marymount – he still enjoys activities, hitting
the gym, and keeping current with the news
of the day. He just has a new room and
accommodations that better suit his needs.

Andy is passionate about Giants football and
Yankee pinstripes. But life alone and isolated
in his New York home was challenging for him
and his daughter, Andrea Ward, The Village at
Marymount’s Director of Nutrition Services.
Today, Andy is flourishing at Marymount Place.
He pals around with supportive new buddies
who also enjoy sports. He’s still in a New York
state of mind, only today he doesn’t mind not
being in New York.

The Lennon Family Foundation
Challenge Grant to Benefit Marymount Place Renovations
As Marymount Place prepares to celebrate its 25th anniversary this fall, it
is our plan to update and renovate its entrance, lobby, living room, and the
sitting area adjacent to the dining room – a total of 1,250 square feet. The
Marymount Place Living Area Renovation Project will soon commence,
providing much needed updates to these areas.
Residents will enjoy a comfortable and inviting sitting area that includes
easier access to the 24-hour snack room as well as updated clinical office
areas to better accommodate their needs. A renovated entrance and
reception area will be more welcoming to visitors and provide a greater
sense of security to both staff and residents. Renovating the formal living
room can make it more conducive to relaxation, reading, daily devotions,
and quiet visits with family and friends.
While we raised a portion of the money needed for this project during the
2012 Celebration of Life Gala, we are excited to announce that we have
also received a unique challenge grant from The Fred A. Lennon Family
Foundation that will help us to add the finishing touches to this project.
Additional donations toward this project will be matched by The Fred A.
Lennon Family Foundation up to $10,000, allowing us to come closer to
our fund-raising goal for this project. Simply designate your gift for the
Marymount Place Living Area Renovation Project and enclose it in the
envelope included within this Annual Report.
We greatly appreciate your willingness to support this project, and
invite you to see your gift to fruition as we unveil this new space during
Marymount Place’s 25th anniversary celebration this fall.
Our commitment to giving back to the
community is the driving force behind the
opening of the new Parker Hannifin Foundation
Therapy and Wellness Center. This innovative
therapy and wellness center features many
differentiating factors that enable residents to
regain the skills they need to enhance their
daily living.
A key component of this facility is GestureTek
Health’s Interactive Virtual Reality Exercise
System (IREX®™). IREX is a stimulating
computer-genterated virtual reality therapy
world that guides residents through clinicianprescribed interactive rehabilitation exercises,
games, and activities that can target specific
body parts. A resident’s performance is
measured and recorded. We are the only facility
in Ohio that offers the IREX program.
The new therapy and wellness center enhances
our ability to offer inpatient and outpatient
services as well as physical, occupational, and
speech therapy and home evaluations.
