Without meaning to, or often without thinking through consequences, churches will usually end up siding with one party in a divorce, especially if sexual sin is involved. But how do we make sense of such a perspective in light of Genesis 1 and 2? How does God see a married couple if not as a "one-flesh" union of husband and wife? Our culture tends to interpret most things through the eyes of autonomous and individual rights. However, Jesus quotes the account in Genesis in Matthew 19:6 by pointing out: "They are no longer two, but one." If a marriage is truly seen as a one flesh union, then how can one party be held responsible for the end of a marriage? If we see marriage as God designed marriage to be seen, then "they both share in the marital breakdown. Specifically, they 740-387-6527 www.tbcmarion.org [email protected] Facebook: Trinity Baptist Church In the July /August Issue Trinity News 3 Pastor Rick’s Report 4 Rooted 5 Mission Serve Team 6 CCO Newletter 7 Education Team Minutes 8 In Memory of 9 Council Minutes 10 Quarterly Business Meeting Minutes 11 Financial Report 12 Cathy’s Corner 13 VBS Photos 1416 Gloria Ginn Newsletter 1719 August Calendar 20 Continued on the next page... “For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.” Galatians 3:27-29 20 Continued from page 1 are both responsible in some way for the marital unfaithfulness of one."[1] This becomes the impetus behind a theology of grace. If we all share in the guilt of the brokenness we experience in our marriages, united as "one" through the activity of God in the marriage covenant, then the grace of God expressed to us in the midst of our shortcomings must become the call of God expressed and offered to others. Punishment, banishment, condemnation, and even avoidance on the part of God's people when dealing with divorced persons, no matter our assessment of their guilt, is not the way of grace and therefore does not reflect the heart of God. We must always consider the danger that we may be continuing in our churches a harsh response to sexual sin which can be found from Jesus' day up through our own. The problem we encounter when we consider the various reasons people get divorced is that we tend to focus on the outward appearance of things, and make our evaluations based on such. The difficulties that arise within the framework of marriage are often very complex and difficult to discern. It is a given that two fallen people are united as one in any marriage, and in the midst of our fallenness we are both self- centered and self-serving. It is easy to point fingers when we see what we believe to be obvious sin, while things like anger and resentment and lack of affection and daily negative attitudes and sexual problems and passive aggressive tendencies and other powerful issues which lead to marital discord are very often hard to detect and identify. Two sinful people who bring their baggage to the most challenging relationship known on earth can never clearly say - "this divorce was his fault; our failed marriage was her doing." At the very least we must recognize that God holds both parties responsible for divorce, and sees and understands issues that go beyond the surface, which is most often all we are able to see. If you entertain the possibility 2 that what I write above might be true, then you can clearly see how this affects our ministry to divorced persons. The person who has gone through divorce is more like us than dislike us, as we all struggle to make our various relationships work in spite of our selfish, fallen tendencies. Given that we do not understand the depths of people the way God does, it makes no sense to presume we can judge and condemn people for things we cannot fully understand, as if we have this right even if we do understand. Therefore, it seems that the Love of God would constrain us to minister mercy and grace to people in the midst of the tragic consequences of divorce, no matter the perceived causes we may think we understand. It is my hope that the discussion to follow will take us further in this direction. Continued from page 18 Gloria Ginn’s July Newsletter I got back to the US in time for my nephew Samuel’s wedding. Gloria Ginn Gloria’s full newsletter with photos is posted on the bulletin board. 19 Continued from page 18 Gloria Ginn’s July Newsletter English Evenings finished up for the semester. We continued talking about many topics that non-believers have trouble understanding or don’t know much about. The last two were Blessing and the The Fruit of the Spirit. When I was teaching Galatians 5:13-26, we wrote the list of what the sinful nature has, and them the list of what the Fruit of the Spirt has. After going over the differences in the two, one belier said he didn’t believe that those qualities could all exist in people. It’s too good to be true. The biggest difference in understanding this is that these qualities do not come by people trying to be good, or doing good enough deeds. These qualities come from the Holy Spirit and grow as we let the Holy Spirit direct our lives and not ourselves. When you look at the list, you might feel like sitting back and saying, I give up. That’s too hard. But the point is that it’s NOT our strength, but the strength that comes from God when we let Him transform our hearts. That’s when the miraculous happens and people turn there heads to ask… “how can they act like that? I can’t.” How often are our lives seen as no different than anyone-else’s, we’re just fitting in. God called us to be transforming agents that call us out of the status quo and into God’s kingdom children. Do I live my life more like I’m a child of the world, or a child of the King of Kings? If there is no difference between how I act and how the world acts, than I am not letting the Holy Spirit rule my life. If I’m on the throne of my life with ME at the center, then Christ is not on the throne of my heart and I am not Christ centered. If I don’t let Christ rule in my heart, I will not bear much fruit, not should I expect to. How many of the qualities of the Fruit of the Spirit do I struggle with? We have a group of leaders who will continue English Evenings while I am in the States, however the group is too small to meet every week. We had about 8 teachers who have moved, gotten married, had babies, changed to another outreach, etc. over the last couple years. As a result, our team is small. If you’ve got a minute, could you pray for the leaders continuing this summer and that God would grow us so we can once again meet weekly. Below is one of our English Evenings leaders who just got married. He won’t be able to help us this next year, but we were able to have the wedding reception at the Ministry Center. Rosta and Lucka were a great asset and God will be able to use them wherever He calls them. To the left is our small women’s Bible Study group. We’ve been studying Spiritual Gifts and then the book of James. We’ve also had time to pray together and see God work in some amazing ways. To the left are two women from English Evenings. One became a Christian about 2 1/2 years ago and the other is very close to making a decision. She has mentioned a desire to believe, but finds it so hard. If you’ve got a minute right now, could you pray for her, that whatever is holding her back will be removed and she will be able to clearly understand the plan of Salvation. Thanks Brock Petrie 3 WWGH 107.1 FM Sundays 7:10— Wednesdays 6:1 0 8 PM —7 PM PASTOR Rick’s REPORT The importance of Worship cannot be underemphasized. I remember talking to a person once who told me they were boycotting worship as a form of protest. They believed that it was more important to do things for the church and with their small groups than to participate in Worship. The problem with this mentality is that Worship is a place where God does things in our life that cannot be found in any other way. There is no, and can be no substitute for worshipping together. These are the reasons why. First, Worship is corporate in nature. It is the one place every week where we have the privilege of meeting with and praising with and praying with the majority of the congregation. The Psalms tell us that “God inhabits the praises of His people.” In other words, God descends upon us in worship in a way that cannot be duplicated or substituted. God desires to fill us with His Spirit and His Grace. Worship and the Sacraments is the place He chooses to do this. Trying to find these things without worship is a bit like trying to celebrate the joys of family without ever getting together, or celebrating Christmas without gathering with those we love, or staying healthy without ever eating vitamins, or staying clean without utilizing water. Some things are just impossible. Secondly, the sermon is a celebration of The Word. It has been a part of worship since the very beginning of the Judeo Christian movement. God’s Spirit will work through a sermon in such a way that lives are transformed. When God calls us to reflect together on His Word He is asking us to corporately reflect on His message to us so that the entire congregation and each individual participates in reflection and corporate learning. It is one of the ways in which we exercise our Spiritual Muscles. God calls few of His to teach and preach, and it is through these gifts that Scripture is brought to life in such a way that God transforms us in order that He might use us to transform the world. Thirdly, corporate praise is a type of event that cannot be found in another arena. The lifting of voices together in praise and worship are not only music in our ears but is our imitation of the very thing that is taking place at God’s throne. There is no place in Scripture where we are allowed to glimpse inside of heaven where we go not see the angels and God’s people not gathered together to sing and proclaim the praises of God in Corporate Worship. This is part of our eternal calling, it will never end, and corporate worship is one of those things that is certain preparation for what we will be doing forever more. It is practice for our eternal calling. It is preparation for our eternal home. It is, more than anything we do, a means of bringing heaven to earth. Christianity without weekly worship is an empty faith, it is dishonorable to God, and it is a sure sign that Christ has not taken full hold of your life. For if He had, there would be nothing more important that gathering with those who love Him to life your hearts in adoration and praise to the One who makes life and breath and everything else a possibility in your life. Let us obey the call of our Lord through the Author of Hebrews………”do not abandon the assembling of yourselves together.” For this is the place where we get to spur one another on toward love and good deeds. 4 June/July 2016 My month was as follows: Spent time visiting and talking with 17 new people in our church · Spending time with 7 families during crisis times · Teaching a Sunday School Class on The Church with Dennis · Visiting shut-ins (11) · Book writing · Participation in Dr. Marks Tuesday night Recovery Class · Benevolence meetings (13) · Campus Ministry Meetings · Three marriage mentoring meetings · One on one times with 10-20 members · Weekly mentoring times (3) · Shopping 4 times with some in need of groceries · Reading these books – More Than a Theory, God the Evidence, Several Commentaries on Luke, The Divine Conspiracy, Foolishness to the Greeks, Love Within Limits, Various Articles on the topic of Faith, Hard Sayings of the Old Testament, More Hard Sayings of the New Testament, Apologetic Preaching, The Power of Praying, The Untold Story of the New Testament Church, The Passion of the Western Mind, The Case for Biblical Christianity, The Hard Sayings of Jesus, The Gospel According to Jesus, Science Creation and the Bible, Timely Homilies, Life of Christ, Jesus The King, The Cosmos, What Christ Thinks of the Church, Various articles and commentaries on The Church, The Book of Ephesians · Sermons on the topic of the Church · Attended one play involving our youth · Personal prayer and study time in mornings · Wednesday morning Coffee and Crumbs · Two Funerals · 23 hospital calls for prayer with the sick · Phone calls with Visitors to our church · Reading and answering a variety of emails · Shared the gospel with people 11 times · Weekly Meetings with Staff Members · Weekly meetings with Cathy Hughes Gloria’s full newsletter with photos is posted on the bulletin board. Once every 4 years I come back for 6 months to visit family, supporters, friends, churches, etc. and share about what God is doing in the Czech Republic. There is also a Totalization Agreement between the U.S. and Czech Republic, that citizens must return every 4-5 years for six months. Before I left, many programs we’d been offering finished up. The Marriage Course was a great success and the couples really appreciated the practical materials and the time built into the course to discuss what they learned between the two of them and how they can apply it to their marriage. Here is the team that led the course for the 6 couples. Each week as the couples met, 2-3 of us helped watch three of their children. This was a great help so the parents were able to attend. Here you can see two of the little tykes. It was Pavlik’s first time to away from his parents, but he began to like it and we had a good time walking in the garden and then watching a Russian animated cartoon that he liked Masa a Medved. [http://www.veselerozpravky.sk/masa-a-medved/] ABC English & Me classes ended with a party for the kids and their parents. This course has opened up opportunities for several of the Moms to now attend our English Evenings. My friend Darina will continue the classes this fall. K12 Church Plant is still going well. If you’d like to see our website, here’s the web address http://www.k12medlanky.ca/ You can choose to go to the English version and also see more pictures. Below is our once a month meeting at Sypka, (biggest meeting area in the Medlanky area). Above, Tom is giving the children’s message. We have about 25 kids and 25 adults now attending. On the right is our meeting in the Ministry Center. We’re getting full and looking into future sites where we can meet as we continue to grow One option is across the street, above the restaurant. There is a meeting room for rent there that is about 1 1/2 times the size of the room in the Ministry Center. So, we may try this and continue to have the Sunday School classes at the ministry center across the street. To finish our School Year with K12, we had a big party by the Medlanky Pond. It’s only about a 5 minute walk from the Ministry Center. We invited people from the many activities that we offer each week, including ABC English & Me, Mom’s Club, Men’s Group, Women’s Group, etc. We wanted to build relationships with people as well as let them get to know more of the people in our church plant. So, we broke them into teams and mixed people together as they were given tasks to do as a team. Here’s Martin & his family (one of the elders for the church plant). Next is Michal and part of his family. He became a Christian about a year ago and now is taking some Bible classes and has taught a couple times on Sunday. Next is cooking sausages over the fire then teams doing skits while the rest watch. Darina had a great idea and made balls of ice with a small animal inside. This was a terrify hit with the children since it was a hot day. We had a great time together and a lot of laughter. God blessed me by allowing me to take 11 amazing young people and two phenomenal adults with me to Fort Wayne, IN, for Mission Serve 2016. It is impossible to put into words what I experienced that week. The presence of God was tangible from the minute we arrived. The theme for Mission Serve 2016 was “Community,” and God clearly established a community within our youth group. They have truly become a solid group. I used to think that mission trips resulted in more of an outward spiritual growth because the focus was all about being the hands and feet of Jesus. God made me eat my words because I have never seen the spirit move so much as I did in Fort Wayne. And, it wasn’t just in my students. It was in every single person that was involved. It was incredible. None of this would have been possible if it was not for the loving, faithful, and generous congregation at TBC. The support we received through prayer and giving was beyond measure. We are so grateful to all of you and consider ourselves fortunate to call TBC home. My prayer is that we are able to take what was started in these kids in Fort Wayne and cultivate it and strengthen their roots and watch them bloom. We are Rooted. The kids learned that God is with us wherever we go. The first night highlighted that God knew Noah and that He knows us (Genesis 6-9, memory verse: Psalm 139:1). The next night we learned how God hears us from the story of Jonah (Jonah 1-3, memory verse 1 John 5:14). Night three found us learning about Peter and the way Jesus strengthened Peter to be able to walk on water (Matthew 14, memory verse: Psalm 28:7). Day four came and we were learning about how much Jesus loved Peter and how much He loves me (John 21, memory verse: 1 John 4:9). The last day came and we discovered how God called and sent Paul into the world to tell people about Jesus which is the very same thing He does in our lives (Acts 13 & 14, memory verse: Matthew 28:19-20). We had 31 kids during the week. We enjoyed kids from out of state, out of town, and across the street as well as our regular group of kids who attend Trinity and our ministries. Once again, our preschoolers had the most students in their class, usually a dozen kids most nights. We also were blessed to have consistent attendance throughout the week – both in numbers and in having the same kids night after night. Each night the Gospel was presented in a variety of ways with hands-on illustrations of biblical truths –from the snacks they ate to the crafts they made and the Bible stories they read or heard. We raised 40 dollars which went to support our youth for their mission trip. Our helpers were amazing, all 43 of them! As usual we enjoyed the help of every possible group of folks in our church – from our youth to our seniors. ALL of the youth who are participating in our mission trip were volunteers during our VBS program. Not all of our 43 volunteers could be there each night which made our high number of helpers ideal. We were blessed to welcome 10 new helpers to our VBS crew! This year more than ever before we were able to fully appreciate the talents and gifts of so many! Our decorations for the sanctuary were a unique blend of recycled materials from previous VBS programs as well as many created items. We also decorated rooms throughout the church this year with the help and creative genius from so many – from youth to people of all ages! All of our crafts and snacks were the complete creations of our very own! Big thanks of appreciation go out to our topfloor crew of folks who endured two roasting nights with no air conditioning and many active bodies. I could never express enough thanks to our volunteers and those of the congregation who made donations to our modest supply list this year. Thank you to each one of you who made contributions toward our craft materials. There were equal favorites among them all. Huge thanks again go out to Chuck and his crew for bringing his horses for the kids to ride and enjoy! We had to cut the evening short due to rain and storms, but I know he will be back again. We continue to evaluate the program and look ahead to next year. Having the program in the evening again opened it up for new people to volunteer. It was wonderful to have newcomers to the volunteer pool. We also adapted to a glitch in our schedule at the church with the scheduled wedding on Friday (which was eventually canceled) and thoroughly enjoyed the Sunday through Thursday schedule. Tuesday nights of ministry to the recovery group children are continuing in our third month with two more months to go (August and September) before Awana resumes. We have been studying prayer. Junior church continues with our Believe curriculum. Promotion Sunday is approaching August 28th. If you have a family member who attends our children’s ministries and is entering kindergarten, 3rd, 6th, or 9th grade, please inform Amy Washburn, the office or me. Thank you for your prayers for our children’s ministry. It continues to be a blessing and privilege to serve here as I prepare for my last month of service. Chuck was born on June 5, 1934 in South Lebanon, Ohio, the son of Oscar and Elizabeth D. (Gildea) Blankenship. Chuck was a graduate of Harding High School in the class of 1953. He worked as a mechanic, serving for over 40 years at Matthews Ford. Chuck fell in love with a girl named Patricia Ann Rawlins and began dating for a couple of years. In 1959, they were married and shared 57 years of marriage together. Chuck was a man of many talents and he had a fondness for tinkering with all kinds of things. He and Pat have lived in their home for 52 years and in that time he slowly but surely renovated the entire home. Being a mechanic, he of course had a love of cars, especially the Ford Mustang. He was a collector of countless items from pins to ash trays and much more. Reading about WWII and watching Westerns were of great interest. Traveling was also an interest that Chuck and Pat shared. Going out West was a favorite; traveling Route 66 and visiting the nation’s National Parks were also fond and cherished memories. Over the years Chuck helped to organize many of his high school class reunions, serving as the class treasurer. He was also a longtime member of the Marion First Church of the Nazarene. Above all, the most cherished times and memories were those that he shared with his family. Family was Chuck’s most valued treasure and being a father to Charles and a grandpa to Wesley were his proudest achievements. Like many others, Chuck was drafted and proudly served in the United States Army to defend our freedoms. He had a great love of country and a sense of duty and honor. Most recently, Chuck had been a loyal member of the Marion County United Veterans Council; he stood alongside his comrades of the Armed Forces on the coldest of winter days and the hottest of the summer sun to honor those veterans who have gone on before. Now it is his time to be honored for his sacrifice and service.
