Overview
Enbio provides surface treatment for structures for space and aerospace
applications For space applications, Enbio has developed a suite of nextgeneration thermal control coatings - that are inorganic and electrically
conductive, and provide extreme stability to radiation and thermal cycling – called
SolarBlack, SuperBlack and SolarWhite. SuperBlack and SolarWhite can also be
applied to composite substrates.

‘dopant’ surface, e ectively changing the chemistry of metal surfaces. Signi cantly, this ‘functionalising’ of a metal surface is achieved without the use of
wet chemistry or thermal input, and is operated at both ambient temperature and
pressure i.e. no vacuum is required, and thus the substrate size is not limited to
equipment chamber size.
Uniquely, Enbio o ers the sector, an ability to tune the thermal balance
requirements of satellites, via the minimal degradation of its coating’s thermooptical characteristics. This provides better component performance, over
extended periods, and o ers the potential to reduce the size and mass of critical
components.
Main Space related products, services and projects
For space applications, Enbio has developed a suite of next-generation
thermal control coatings - that are inorganic and electrically conductive, and
provide extreme stability to radiation and thermal cycling – called SolarBlack,
SuperBlack and SolarWhite. SuperBlack and SolarWhite can also be applied
to composite substrates.
Originally developed for Solar Orbiter, ESAs landmark mission to study the
Sun, these products represent a quantum leap in thermal control coating
performance for both inter-planetary and earth orbiting satellites. All Sun
facing surfaces of the Solar Orbiter craft will be protected by an Enbio product,
including the critical main heatshield. In fact, for a number of applications,
both baseline and back-up solutions are Enbio products.

Thermal space applications of this technology include radiators, waveguides,
antenna, re ectors, sensors, solar array yokes, horns, internal panels /
enclosures and OSR replacement. Substrates include complex 3D shapes,
tubes and foils.

An expanded production unit will come on-stream by mid-2014 to support
larger substrates for both Solar Orbiter and space sector requirements. The
designed production cells have a 4m x 2.5m x 3m working envelope.
Enbio’s space-focused products are currently at TRL6 and TRL7. FM contracts
in 2014.
Using di erent ‘dopants’ Enbio’s CoBlast technology can also provide
enhanced adhesion performance for the joining of dissimilar materials i.e.
composites to metals, and can provide enhanced corrosion protection of
metals – a replacement ‘green’ alternative to toxic chemical conversion
coatings.
Enbio o ers a rapid response coupon / prototyping service for client
application enquiries.
