Amazon River Cruise

Amazon River Cruise
Natural Trails
Brazil
4 days/3 nights
Begins on Wednesday in Manaus
AMAZON RIVER
The Amazon River, surrounding nearly half of the
territory of Peru, is the mightiest river in the world,
flanked by vast stretches of pristine rainforest. The
rainforest canopy shelters the richest and most
diverse ecosystem on Earth, making it the perfect
place for an Amazon River cruise.
The Amazon River is the second longest river in the
world after the Nile. It is 4,080 miles long and runs
from the Andes Mountains in Peru through Brazil to the
Atlantic Ocean. It contains more water than any other
river in the world- more than the Mississippi, the Nile
and the Yangtze combined. At its widest point it can be
over 200 miles wide and inland, it is often seven miles
wide.
Ends on Saturday in Manaus
The Amazon River basin is the home of so many
animals- especially "extreme" creatures, like catfish
which, in the U.S., grow up to 40 lbs., but in Brazil have
been measured up to 200 lbs.

Suggested Itinerary
There are several ways to see the wonders of the Amazon. We consider that the best way to
see and enjoy nature, especially on the amazing waterways of the Amazon, is to be agile in
this wonderful environment and to be always in the midst of the jungle, especially at dawn
and dusk. That's the experience that Sur Fantástico provides on the Amazon River Cruise.

Arrive at the airport and transfer to the lobby
of the Tropical Hotel.
(14:00) Boarding and depart upstream on the Rio

animals with the possibility of observing birds, frogs, snakes and caimans.

Day 2 (Thursday) - Amazon
Early morning we explore the surroundings along the water’s edge in our canoes
while we mainly find fruit eating birds like parrots and toucans.
After breakfast we go for a jungle walk, we
discover many surprising fragrances in leaves,
fruits, woods and animals. Around midday we
return and we may go for a swim, before lunch.
In the Afternoon we navigate through the
Anavilhanas National Park, one of the world`s
largest fresh water archipelagos, a labyrinth of
waterways. In the late afternoon we embark in
the canoes and learn more about this wonderful
nature park.
Day 3 (Friday) - Amazon
Typical of the Amazon River system
is a forest type (igapó and várzea)
which is highly adapted to survive
long periods of submergence.
Following the rainy season in the
Andes, the water level of some rivers
(such as the Rio Negro and Solimões
at Manaus) may rise as much as 15
Meters (50ft) on an annual basis,
and the water covers large areas of
forest for up to eight months.
Travelling by boat at high water
allows easy observation of wildlife in
the flooded forest. The animals are
concentrated at the treetops, which
are not just accessible but almost at
eye level.
For nature observation by boat, such
as Amazon Clipper Cruises provide,
the period from the end of the rainy
season, March onward, is the most
fascinating.
Early in the morning we will spend a little time fishing piranhas and other fishes.
After breakfast we visit a “Natives Community” where we find many of the typical
Amazonian fruits like Cupuaçu and Tapereba, palm trees like Açaí, Tucumã and
Pupunha. We learn about the preparation of manioc flour and the health and
education situation of the children.
After lunch we are
landing on one of the
white sandy beaches
to swim in the dark
water and enjoy the
Pink River Dolphins.
Exploring by canoe and scout for wildlife in the late afternoon. On the way toward
the Amazon River will be served dinner.
Day 4 (Saturday) - Amazon/Manaus
Early this morning we explore the Lago
Janauary Ecological Park. This area is
usually a very good place to observe
wildlife and chances to see the “Victoria
Regia” the giant water lilies.
While we have Breakfast we navigate to
the "Meeting of the Waters", the
confluence of the world`s two largest
rivers, the Amazon and the Negro.
Manaus was confirmed as one of the
12 host cities of the FIFA World Cup
2014 in Brazil.
Now is time to return to the Tropical
Hotel landing-stage while we join fine
views of Manaus` waterfront.
(11:30) Arrival and transfer to the
airport.
The Amazon River Dolphin, alternately
Boto, Boto cor de Rosa, or Pink River
Dolphin (Inia geoffrensis), is a
freshwater river dolphin endemic to
the Amazon, and Orinoco
Araguaia/Tocantins River systems.
The neck vertebrae of the Amazon
River Dolphin are not fused together,
and therefore the Boto is able to bend
its neck in a 90 degree angle to its
body, and skillfully hunt fish in the
flooded forest.
